Derbyshire 341-8 (Whiteley 80, Basra 72, Jewell 60, Chappell 47, Lord 2-76)
Nottinghamshire 214 (Slater 68, Aitchison 4-34, Chappell 3-57, Morley 2-61)
Derbyshire won by 127 runs
The win in the Vitality Blast at Trent Bridge was professional and convincing. Today we dismantled them, with a team effort which showed what this team is capable of - and what an infusion of new blood has brought to it.
When 96-1 became 116-4 in the space of five overs, supporters can have been forgiven for setting their expectation at a score around 230. Came and Jewell batted well, the latter especially so, before Came played an unnecessary shot and was caught. Bin Naeem played some pleasing strokes but went in a similar manner, while Guest, who had looked in good touch, was brilliantly caught down the leg side by Moores. When Jewell played on, frustratingly not turning an excellent start into a definitive innings, the portents were not good. We have we seen such declines become terminal, far too often in the past.
The advent of Amrit Basra changed the momentum of the game. First with Martin Andersson, then Ross Whiteley, he took on the Nottinghamshire attack with stroke play of dazzling brilliance. His hand/eye coordination is exceptional, as is his timing. He was the senior partner in both stands, with players more experienced than he and it was magnificent to watch. He judges line and length so quickly and from being in the ascendancy, the visitors were forced onto the back foot and never again regained a foothold.
If he hadn't done so already, Basra should today have confirmed a full-time contract for next year. He is a game-changer; he was today, he will be in the future and players of such ability are rare commodities. The only mistake he made was putting his foot to the floor too early, in the 42nd over, when he could have just carried on as he was for another two or three before really cutting loose.
Yet today it didn't matter. Whiteley took over and partnered by the returning Zak Chappell (how good to see him back!) shared an exhilarating stand of exactly one hundred in 46 balls. Basra's 72 from 55 balls, Whiteley's 80 from 52 and Chappell's 47 from 26 turned the run chase from a sedate walk in the park to something frenetic and it was very much game on, as Derbyshire reached 341-8.
Fours and sixes flowed as the visiting bowlers and fielders buckled under pressure. It was understandable, as the strokeplay and power from all three was magnificent to watch, at least for supporters from the right side of Brian Clough Way...
I was very impressed by Whiteley today. He needs such performances to stake a claim for being around next year, but today he played the perfect hand. He knocked it around sensibly while Basra cut loose, then took over and delivered for his team. A white ball contract for 2026 could yet be his, on this showing.
Nottinghamshire needed a good start from the established pair of Hameed and Slater, but the opening bowlers, 'Aitch and H' were accurate and probing. Hameed went to a sharp catch by Jewell from Aitchison, while Haydon was wicketless but again made a good impression. He bowls accurately and looks like a young man who has worked out his game. Like Basra, he should become a fixture in Mickey's Team, Version Three.
Nottinghamshire were largely up with the required rate but regularly lost wickets, with the home ground fielding far better than that the visitors had displayed earlier. This was expertly martialed by Brooke Guest, who not only changed the bowling cleverly, with no formulaic bowling spells, but held two outstanding catches after departing to the one himself, earlier.
The first, removing the dangerous Haynes, was a tribute to his footwork, while the second, doing unto Moores as he had himself been done to, was down to his extraordinary agility. It's a pity that Bob Taylor wasn't at the former players day today, as he would undoubtedly have approved of the skipper's glove work throughout. It isn't easy doing both of those things well and Bob himself couldn't manage it, but Brooke was highly impressive today
Slater batted nicely, but was never allowed to cut loose and eventually departed caught and bowled to Morley, who did very well here. So too did Andersson, varying his pace and proving very difficult to get away. Aitchison, who has got better with the white ball as he has got fitter (unsurprisingly) took four well-deserved wickets, with the attack looking far better in this match. Good catches were held and the ground fielding stood strong.
This was a memorable performance and a fully deserved win.
Onwards and upwards, eh?
Great win. I listened back to the commentary of the last few overs on national radio on 5 live sports extra with Kevin Howells etc. to see what they made of it. I thought it was dreadful, they spent most of the time talking about other games and other teams players with the odd ball Derbyshire bowled mentioned now and again with hardly any mention of who bowled it or who fielded it. Maybe it was because Derbyshire where on top.

Well that was more like it 😀 Basra looks a real find, oozes positivity in everything he does.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent all round performance today with Derbyshire outplaying Notts in all formats of the game. Basra certainly needs signing up long term before someone else ( like Notts ) pounces. No excuses about things like budget, just do it.
ReplyDeleteWhiteley has certainly given MA a decision to make re next year.
Considering how by my reckoning each team was missing 3/4 first team regulars I was surprised how poor Notts were as we thrashed them for the second time this season.
Slater was sketchy ( dropped twice ) and tbh once the field went out I think Derbyshire knew he couldn’t hurt us as he struggled with spin and his overall strike rate of 80 heaped pressure on the other batters as the rate rose to 9 an over.
The only disappointment for was an average crowd with a strong following from over the border.
A beautiful warm sunny day and we are no where near filling the ground. Come on Derbyshire fans support your club. You moan there’s not enough cricket in August! Get down to the ground.
Paul
Regarding the attendance, I spent the day with some Warwickshire friends at Rugby school.
DeleteIt was packed. Great venue for cricket and perfect weather.
50 over cricket in August is wonderful. It needs to be higher profile.
Excellent performance & a good day out. Basra was exceptional, his timing really stood out. Sure he is going to go through rough patches, but he has to be offered a contract. Whiteley played the sort of innings he was signed for. Haydon looks more first team ready than Potts. Play like that & we will qualify.

Just got back to Telford after a wonderful day out at the cricket. Treated my 88 year old father as a birthday treat and he really enjoyed his day out. I had my doubts when we lost Guest but I needn’t have worried. Basra was superb….sign him up before someone like Notts start sniffing around and then Whiteley and Zak continued the carnage. It was nice to see an opposition team buckle under the pressure of chasing a big score. I thought Haydon again bowled well, reminds me a bit of a right-armed Wiley, again sign him up, a mention for Morley who did well, as did Aitchison…..and I thought we fielded really well, a lot better than them. A really great day out. Grant from Telford
ReplyDeleteReckon your Dad is our talisman, Grant. We should get him on the payroll!
DeleteHe cares for my mum and doesn’t get out of the house much. He couldn’t stop talking about the game on the way back 😊👍
DeleteThat's a consequence of getting older and my Dad was the same, Grant. Glad he enjoyed his day out though. Good weather and good performance!
DeleteIt's so frustrating being a Derbyshire supporter.
ReplyDeleteOn a day like this all seems possible.
Please sir, can I have some more?
Days like this make all the disappointing days more tolerable…Grant from Telford
DeleteExcellent team effort , Basra looks very capable and the bowling unit ensured Notts lost wickets on a regular basis .
ReplyDeleteNotts body language in the field had noticeably changed as our innings progressed .. 50 overs is such a good format to watch let’s hope the ECB think tank don’t mess it up on the new format planning .
Yes a wonderful 50 overs game and with wickets to spare , Derbyshire then played T-20 cricket to bat Notts out of sight. A perfect performance and let’s hope for some more. Whiteley was magnificent and I’m looking forward to him returning to Repton school on Friday for hopefully more of the same. Please give him a new contract as he’s still got this in him and his experience will be invaluable to rub off on the gifted Basra and others

An excellent all round performance. Basra and Haydon have really given us something. The latter hasn't had the rewards for some excellent bowling. He looks worth a white ball gig next year, so far. I have no idea what his red ball skills are. Basra just looks a natural talent and is really exciting to watch. Zak Chappell is our talisman in this comp and picked up where he left off last year. Kris
ReplyDeleteIf only we could produce performances like this on a more regular basis. Anyway that was an excellent effort from all eleven. The young guns augur well for the future and surely serious consideration must be given to offering longer contracts to the likes of Basra and Haydon.
ReplyDeleteWould be great to see a youthful Derbyshire side, in the near future, led by Brooke Guest featuring Came, Montgomery, Andersson, Aitchison, Basra, Haydon and not forgetting Harry Moore.
Nudger
Fantastic performance and great all round team effort. The 50 over cup is a brilliant competition and all the better for being played when the other crap is taking place. You get the chance to see some very good emerging players and the competition can literally be won by any county because teams who would normally be expected to win easily like Surrey have more players missing so it makes it far more interesting
ReplyDeleteDon't want to shout it too loudly but what a talent Basra is looking. Great performance Derbyshire!
ReplyDeleteHad a brilliant day today at Derby and thoroughly enjoyed taking down Notts again, having been at Trent Bridge for the Blast victory a few weeks ago. The innings of Jewell, Basra, and Chapple were all great but the most massive credit to Whiteley. I’ve been critical of the signing of him last year, but he puts a lot in, is a great catcher and today showed what he can still do with the bat. I’d be happy to see back next year. Meanwhile, Basra and Haydon look like real finds and it was great to see Haydon trusted with the new ball and doing really well with it. Finally, there’s something about Aitchison in white ball cricket - for whatever reason he ends up taking a lot of wickets. A lot of this looks really good.
ReplyDeleteBut then again being a Derbyshire fan it’s the hope that kills you… lol. I hope I’m wrong and we can really kick on in this competition!

This is how we should have played in the T20. Everyone chipped in. Jewell provided a springboard, and Whiteley reminded us what he can do.
ReplyDeleteBasra looks a talent, Bin Naeem did well, as did Haydon.
Also, Guest's captaincy was excellent, especially allowing Morley to bowl his ten overs on the trot, which stifled Notts.

I don't think there's any point leaving Ben Aitchison hanging any longer. I would get his 2 year deal done now, if I was in charge. Kris
ReplyDeleteI expect that to be announced fairly soon, Kris. Good cricketer, Ben and he has stayed fit AND taken wickets since his return. Also weighed in with runs and he has a safe pair of hands. What's not to like?!
DeleteI don't think it's helped Ben to come back into Kookaburra cricket. I think he would take more CC wickets in April and May, with the ball nipping off the seam. However, his T20 figures at Headingley were excellent, as was his batting at Northants. Yesterday, he had the ball on a string. Kris
ReplyDeleteAgreed, Kris
