Joe Hawkins, with an excellent 62, steered Derbyshire to 273, after the overnight retirement of Anuj Dal. It left Yorkshire chasing 215 to win.
At one point they looked like getting there, but an excellent spell by Rory Haydon, who took 4-23, was backed up by Jack Morley (3-82) and Nick Potts (2-25), while Mitch Wagstaff took the key wicket of the talented Noah Kelly.
This was an excellent win, from a side that finished the game looking quite different to the one that began it.
As a side they have been playing excellent cricket all summer and the young players coming through give genuine reasons for excitement.
Hawkins looks a player and I think we'll see him play for the first team sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteI'd also like to see us take a punt on Haydon, our seam bowling has been average once you look past Reece and giving Haydon a rookie contract till the end of the season could be a welcome injection of new blood both enabling more rotation and providing some healthy competition.
Indeed Steve, a very promising performance and a good win. Haydon looked very sharp from the video extracts and Hawkins played well all-round. Not to mention the 51 not out by our new all-round sensation from New Zealand !
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed the t20 yesterday despite the result.
It was a decent game, Adrian, thanks. The best two players on display were South Africans - Michael Levitt for the Dutch, Brendon McMullen for Scotland. The latter should be getting into the county game, but I believe needs to qualify to play in England.
DeleteBut there was only one scoreboard and only those sat in the pavilion could see it. So it was very strange to be watching a game of cricket and following the score on Cricinfo... Even a basic scoreboard interview in view of 2/3 of the ground would have helped..
Security left much to be desired too
Another superb performance by jack morley. He’s very young for a spin bowler and could easily develop into one of the best spin bowlers Derbyshire have ever had. Time is on his side and it’s probably lucky he’s not 6 ft 3 plus which seems to be Englands only criteria for picking spinners
ReplyDeleteI managed to catch some of the game (nice ground, though lack of facilities, apart from nearby pub). Due to the nature of the schedule, this round of fixtures across the country served (from what I hear) as a warm-up for the upcoming 4-day fixtures for players not involved in T20. So both sides were stronger than the 2nd XIs would normally be.
ReplyDeleteYou wonder how dispiriting it much be for Mitch Wagstaff (and others) that, regardless of what they have done, have been unable to break into the 1st team - we are now nearly 3 months into the season. However one person missing was David Lloyd, which may suggest a change in the 1st XI for the next game.
I was there to see Harry Came nick off to Ben Coad (far from unique in that situation). Harry's backlift does cut across the ball - leaving him vulnerable to the front pad and nicking off - you would have thought coaches would work with him on it. Otherwise I don't think we are going to see his full potential. I did hear 'on the grapevine' that he prefers opening, so moving him up to open with Mitch at 3 could be an option.
