The team selection, whoever was responsible, was flawed. I am assuming that Mickey Arthur had the final say, but Samit Patel would have had a sizeable input too.
While acknowledging that Nye Donald didn't cost us anything last night, his glove work was not tidy, his dismissal was poor, having just lost his opening partner to a good ball and asking him to open with no form - indeed, very little cricket - behind him was ill-thought. If and when he fires, he can put a game out of reach, but my concern is that asking him to keep, after a lengthy layoff with an arm injury, risks aggravating the problem.
To be three wickets down in 13 balls is a lot from which to recover. Perhaps a rethink is required, with Martin Andersson, who was in splendid form last night as he has been all season, promoted to open, as he did last year with success for Middlesex. If we get off to a good start, then Donald could come in at three, tee off (which he is always going to do) and take us on. If we lose an early wicket, David Lloyd could go in at three.
Samit is too high, at five. He can still hit a ball, but it is either a boundary or a single, as he isn't fit enough to run the twos. So he should drop down the order, maybe again giving late impetus on his day.
The selection of Nick Potts was odd, after no selections this year. Then to only bowl him in one over - the second - against a couple of batters we all know are dashers was odd. I do fear for Nick as he needs a big end of season to earn a new deal, but his tendency to drag one or two down every over is especially costly in this format.
Ghazanfar? He looks a class act and will take a lot of wickets this year. No one seemed to pick him and if that first over lbw shout had been given his way, the result could have been different. His two wickets came from deliveries that spun in different directions and he got far more turn than either Trevaskis or Patel (although Samit bowled tidily). After his first over went for sixteen, the next three conceded only thirteen and the only blemish was the dropped caught and bowled. He looks a good signing.
We aren't far away from a good side. Based on last night, we could easily accommodate Guest for Potts with Andersson and Lloyd picking up the other overs. With a tweak to the batting order, modifying it as required by the game situation, our side would look better with the following line up:
Jewell
Andersson
Donald/Lloyd
Madsen
Lloyd/Donald
Whiteley
Guest
Patel
Chappell
Ghazanfar
Brown
Pat Brown had a nightmare last night, but anyone who has played cricket has experienced this sort of game. He's too good not to come again, but hopefully Harry Moore isn't too far away from fitness, which might change the line up again. But with an attack where 8 to 12 overs might be spin, you have to pick your best wicket keeper.
Thoughts?
I wouldn't argue with either line up, Steve. Guest has to play, and Patel needs to bat at eight. Having Chappell at nine means we have someone who can clear the boundary rope. Our bowling attack looks decent. And, if needed, Whiteley can turn his arm. Let's not forget that he took 3-23 against Notts last season.
ReplyDeleteChastening start to the T20 campaign but credit to the middle order for the fightback. Early days but need to bounce back quickly.
ReplyDeleteMark D, Buxton.
Yes Mark, the fighting spirit of the season remained in place. Could do with a win on Wednesday, ahead of the local derby...
DeleteI've seen absolutely no evidence that Donald is a big hitter Peakfan, didn't do much last season in the T20 so why will he fare any better this?. Lloyd as well, he might make 40 or 50 but it will take him as many balls to reach it, something you can't afford in this format. No big quick hitters again in this Derbyshire side again
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, Lloyd averages 132 per 100 balls in T20, Guest 127, Madsen 135, Donald 144, Andersson 125...
DeleteNot sure where you get that Donald is not a big hitter ? He holds the Derbyshire record for the quickest t20 fifty in 19 balls !!
DeleteBrown should come again and hopefully Chappell gets his mojo back and the two spinners are very good so my main problem with this team is the lack of a proper fifth bowler so for me we play Aitchison/Moore/Thommo depending on fitness / conditions. Filling in with Lloyd/Andersson will cost us in the long run. Unfortunately the only way to accommodate this is to persist with Donald as keeper.
Paul
If there’s faults to pick with Donald, and there's a few, “not being a big hitter” certainly isn't one them. That's exactly what he is, often to his own detriment
DeleteYeah I agree, Adam. Sometimes I feel it is 'boundary or bust' and while that is fine if it comes off, when it doesn't it looks irresponsible
DeleteI"'ve seen absolutely no evidence that Donald is a big hitter" He broke Derbshires record for fastest 50 not once but twice. Is that not evidence for you?
DeleteJohn Flint life member
He might do that once in a bluemoon though. We need consistent big hitters in this side, nobody can score big on a consistent basis. It's been a regular problem for us season after season
DeleteI suppose the counter argument is that very few big hitters do it consistently. And those that do/did have been out of our budget..we had Loots Bosman and after his knock at Leeds he didn't do much. Shahid Afridi too. Even Adrian Kuiper, better than most, had his failures. It is a high risk game and not one that offers guarantees
DeleteI think perhaps last night there was a keenness to use some of the squad who have not played much cricket and consequently do not have much form. To expect all of Donald, Whiteley, Patel, Brown and Potts to hit the ground running is a bit of an ask.
ReplyDeleteI guess that's the issue with single format players though.
DeleteIt was all a bit strange from the moment I saw the team. We have plenty of room for Guest with the amount of bowling options we have and leaving him out for Potts so bowl one over looks crazy in hindsight.
ReplyDeleteWe had a disaster in both powerplays and then did well to recover the situation in both innings but left too much to do against a club that is full of confidence right now.
Agree with your assessment of the batting lineup, as for the bowling in the powerplay, Chappell has to be first up and work from there.
What difference does it make dropping Donald down to 3?He'll still get out he hasn't played any cricket for ages and he 's probably still feeling his shoulder so doesn't want to free his arms.I'd go with 3 spinners and strengthen the batting we had 3 tailenders in against Leicestershire.topspinner
ReplyDeleteIt gives us a start, potentially, with 2 players in form. If we don't get it he moves down and Lloyd goes in. Thomson will play some matches, I think, depending on pitches. It would make sense if home ones favoured our spin attack!
DeleteBesides, with Lloyd we are already playing 3 spinners..
ReplyDeleteThat's right Paul. If he, Whiteley and Patel win us a couple of games each we might not be far away. I know what he can offer as a bat, my only concern is a part time keeper and a mystery spinner. It might be fine, but I have concerns. It is all about opinions. We all have them and that's fine!
ReplyDeleteThis article is spot on. Donald needs time he can be match winner on his day and 3 or 5 maybe right. In Big bash Jewell played anchor role very well.
ReplyDeleteThe 2 biggest challenges I can see
Is who is the opening pair bowler? I think 1st 6 overs maybe difficult workout. I really liked how Leicester bowled power play. I thought LVB was different class 1st spell.
Should we question Patel ability as captain?
I think so far he has done good solid job with the ball. I believe that will continue this season. His strongest asset is his own self belief in his ability. This could also be his great weakness when comes to batting at right time. I just feel that sometimes how he has used his bowlers has been unfair and poor. I really hope proves me wrong and will be happy to say it. As a team we need a good captain to get big calls right. I just question good players are not always goor captains.
For me, Samit could bowl one or a couple in the Powerplay. His accuracy and experience will be handy and it solves a team problem. If Moore gets match fit, he and Chappell are obvious early bowlers
DeleteVan Beek is a good cricketer now. We picked him up before he had fully figured out his game but he is a good player for them
Ghazanfar didn't appear to have a sponsor on his shirt, unless my eyesight is going. Who are we sponsored by that would be problematic?
ReplyDeleteDafabet, so I can understand that from his perspective, assuming he is Muslim, as gambling is fobidden

ReplyDeleteLosing the 2nd Xi fixure last week (ironically v Leicestershire) where I would have expected a number of the 1st XI to feature was another factor meaning we were not fully up to speed whereas Leicestershire (I believe) had more 2nd XI fixtures in the run up. With there being 2nd XI games Monday & Tuesday I would expect the Monday side to feature more of Friday nights team.
ReplyDeleteAlso I thought we wasted Ghazanfar's 1st over by using him in the powerplay. If we want to use up a cheap opening over why not use David Lloyd or go back to Wayne Madsen bowling the first over.
On the wicket keeping situation I thought we missed Brooke Guest's calmness with his batting more on Friday. Wicketkeeper is always a role that now seems to be sacrificed but we did win the 1990 Sunday League with Peter Bowler as wicket keeper instead of Karl Krikken although Geoff Miller at the end of his career and a bit of Kim Barnett was not exactly a mystery spinner we now have.
Yes, that rain off was important, David. I think they wanted to split their dangerous opening pair and if they had got that lbw call, who knows?
DeleteAnd yes, Bowler did well with a largely seam attack. I think if Kim bowled then it was largely seam up. That's the thing with T20 - you need your biffers, but if that doesn't come off (and it can't always) you need the guys who can work a total for you
Regarding Donald, on his day he is, arguably, our most explosive batsman, as he showed in the T20 last season. His big hitting won't come off in some games; but in others it will. Any big hitter will have his failures.
ReplyDeleteHaving said all that, I'd like to see Donald aim to make a score well north of sixty.
Yes, he has the talent to be really special but needs to realise that 50 will influence but not necessarily win a match. A hundred, or nearer to it, usually will. I really hope he comes off as he is lovely to watch in full flight
DeleteI can't recall the first team going into the Blast with no official warm up game? Leics used their 2 week break to dismantle some amateur sides. I don't know if it would make a difference, but practice makes perfect, in any walk of life. Kris
ReplyDeleteYeah they lost a 2s game to rain in which they would likely have fielded a first choice side. Did they have a game against a local side, or an internal one? It wasn't publicised if it happened, but then they might consider there being no need to do so
DeleteThey hammered 300+ against Staffordshire as a warm up match
DeleteNick
Leicestershire did for sure, Nick. Didn't see where Derbyshire played them?
