Glamorgan v Derbyshire day four

Glamorgan 431 and 256-7 (Kellaway 74, Tickner 3-44)

Derbyshire 350 and 308-9 (Andersson 78, Guest 48, Jewell 44, Lloyd 42, Dal 34, Kellaway 5-101, Leonard 3-66)

Match drawn

One of the best final days of County Championship cricket that you could wish to see ended in a draw at Cardiff, with the last two Derbyshire batters at the crease.

The morning didn't suggest anything especially exciting and the declaration came at the interval, 338 in 65 overs the target. I didn't really think it was on and said so on social media. It was a higher rate than had been managed throughout the game, the fielding side could put as many back as they wanted, legside wides would not be penalised and the pitch was fairly slow.

Yet at one point Derbyshire looked to be winning it. Lloyd and Jewell batted very well but, like everyone in the match, got out before making the match-defining score - it was one of those pitches. Madsen looked in imperious form before being brilliantly taken at long leg by Gorvin, who was seldom out of the match and at that point it looked like the shutters might go up.

Yet after tea, Andersson and Guest launched a counter offensive full of brilliant strokeplay. Guest was especially strong on the reverse sweep, while Andersson just looks the business every time he plays. They added 97 runs and looked like they were about to lead a victory charge, when Guest was adjudged leg before. I have to say I was less than convinced and it took the umpire an age, but such is the game.

Enter Dal and his partnership with Andersson had Derbyshire chasing a run a ball off the last ten. It was stirring stuff and it seemed like the unlikely just might happen.

Then Kellaway, who batted well earlier, bowled an excellent spell for the home side and extracted increasing turn, got one to 'pop' and Andersson was defeated on the reverse sweep after a magnificent display. With the T20 fast approaching it was a reminder that he opened in that competition for Middlesex last season and to very good effect.. food for thought, perhaps?

Chappell was elevated, presumably to hit, but was bowled first ball by one that turned through a sizeable gate. Thomson then played too early at Leonard, which left the limping Luis Reece to enter proceedings at ten in the order, certainly the best we have had coming in with eight wickets down, I suspect.

Dal used his feet to try to combat Kellaway but was cleverly defeated by his arm ball, which brought in Tickner to try to save the game, with 28 deliveries remaining. He stoically faced ten of those deliveries, as Glamorgan switched pacemen at one end and hoped Kellaway could twirl one more piece of magic at the other. Then again, Blair averages 32 with bat and ball this summer, so perhaps we shouldn't have worried..

Reece and Tickner resisted. Kellaway even bowled the penultimate delivery with his left hand to try to shake things up, but with everyone around the bat, Luis stood tall and earned the draw points.

Of course it is easy to say that we missed out on the win points today. Yet for me, we took it much closer than I expected and once again I was very proud of the way the team battled and saw their way to draw points that could be very important in September.

We remain undefeated, we remain in second place. These are giddy heights indeed, yet thoroughly deserved for the brand of positive, exciting cricket that the team are playing.

A win would have been quite special, but I am very happy with our efforts and the progress clearly being made this summer.

Phew! Time to unwind now...

A fantastic match which shows how amazing 4 day county cricket is. For me personally I couldn’t care less about the hundred or t 20 or even the England team anymore. Red ball county championship cricket will always be the pinnacle of the game however much the ecb try to ruin it. A very good declaration by Sam north east today and I think we will be the happiest team to get a draw. You can see a fantastic spirit in the team now and we fully deserve our top 2 place. Long May it continue

    1. A totally unfashionable viewpoint Ian, but I agree with you 100%.

    3. Thank you. I find with all the hype surrounding the England team and players often talking about how wonderful and what great human beings other superstar England players are it makes them impossible to like. County cricket is kind of unfashionable and low key and thats why it’s so wonderful

A great match. I definitely didn't see this coming after day 2. This team has developed stores of resilience not seen from a Derbyshire team in years. Having a batting line up with so many all rounders definitely helps, though there is an argument that one more true specialist bowler would help with taking 20 wickets, which still seems a problem. Thats nit picking though. Well done to Glamorgan for a fair declaration. Well done to Derby for going for it, even after Madsen and Jewel were out, and getting so close.

  4. Proper game of four day cricket so congratulations to both teams. To come back from where we were in the first innings struggling to avoid the follow on to where we were with an hour to go is credit to the team. Obviously good for confidence to hold on in the end. Deserve a weeks rest now before Old Trafford which has been a flat track so far this season. Onwards and upwards

  6. The team are showing such great resilience this season that we haven’t seen in recent years. The fight back from a tricky position in the first innings to finish with a deficit much closer than I expected and then taking on the challenge today and giving it a really good go was very pleasing. I’ll admit I was ready for them to shut up shop and take the draw when Martin Andersson was out but I’m not the most optimistic of fans. Lots of great contributions throughout the side too, rather than an over-reliance on a couple of players.

If you’d told me that five games in we’d be undefeated I would never have believed it, but here we are and I couldn’t be happier.

  7. Hero of the match? A certain Mr Reece methinks.
When you get a match like this, and the Middx v Kent one, it totally turns the 20/20 (or the 100 thing) excitement debate on its head. Endless fours and sixes against hapless bowlers, or our match today?
Maybe I'm just an old boy and have an attention span of more than 5 minutes, but there is really no comparison..

    1. Totally agree with you too. Proper cricket has so many changes in the course of a game and nothing in the game can beat a batsman building a long innings especially on a difficult wicket from Ian in Suffolk

A proper game of cricket and honours deservedly shared. Both will think they came close and will also be reasonably content with a draw.

  9. An incredible fightback. From 162/7 the follow on target looked miles beyond us. Just like at Leicester, we never let them break loose. When the 4th wicket went during the chase, it looked like defeat was looming, but then Guest and Andersson built up a slow steam and it was a distant probability. With 10 overs left I thought we would win. With 5 overs left I thought we would lose. Also a proper declaration that rightly favoured Glammy, but gave us an outside chance on a good wicket.

Just need Came to join the party now.

  10. Another fantastic team performance where we never threw in the towel at any point. When someone fails with the bat, someone else provides runs. And all our bowling attack are picking up wickets. This is a team we now expect to win rather than lose.

A superb game; huge congratulations to both teams.

  12. I echo all the comments above. I thought Glamorgan made a sporting declaration and our players went determinedly for the target. I also thought we were going to pull off a spectacular win for a while. All 22 players should be proud of their part in this great match.

Second in the table is a great performance and a solid base to build on.

  13. Fair play to Glamorgan for a well timed declaration, and proving that a hybrid pitch can produce an exciting game. Maybe shaving one end is the way to go.....

For me, it was encouraging to see Tickner bowl so well in their second innings. It will make such a difference if he can maintain that sort of form. As for Andersson, what a stellar signing he is turning out to be. Credit to MA.

A very enjoyable day of championship cricket, and a thoroughly entertaining finish. Made the commentary team look rather foolish too....

  14. Proper cricket played by both teams.
This game and the Middlesex v Kent match showed 4 day cricket at it's best.
    Long may it continue!
Still think we should have batted first though
