Derbyshire v Kent day one

Derbyshire 351-2 (Jewell 152*, Came 89, Lloyd 50, Madsen 30*)

v Kent

Wayne Madsen won the toss at Derby this morning, then sat with his pads on until the evening session, as his top order made hay while the sun shone.

David Lloyd and Caleb Jewell led off with a stand of 99 runs, which was followed by one of 196 by Jewell and Harry Came, as the visiting bowlers were put to the sword. It was a good toss to win, as little happened with the ball until the evening session and the second new one. Came was especially unlucky to be dismissed, run out at the non-striker's end as Jake Ball got a fingertip to a straight drive from Jewell.

Lloyd looked in very good touch and a leg side pickup for six was probably the shot of the day. He is always very easy on the eye and it is just a shame that sometimes the scorebook doesn't reflect the way he plays. What he and Jewell do, in this mode, is put the opposition under pressure and this was maintained throughout the day.

Came batted beautifully and it was nice to see the rhythm back in his batting, no doubt given  confidence after his second innings effort at Old Trafford. His feet moved well and he was looking set for a century when he was so cruelly dismissed.

Yet today was really all about Caleb Jewell. Regardless of the numbers, this was his best innings, so far, for Derbyshire. It was the sort of knock that Chris Rogers, Michael di Venuto or Simon Katich might once have played, largely playing straight, secure in defence, assaying nothing overly ambitious but severe on any lapses of line and length.

There were a few of them and 31 extras tells a tale of an untidy effort by the visitors, but Jewell batted beautifully throughout and crucially kept going. He might have gone in the afternoon session, when Matt Parkinson, who I felt bowled well in his early spell, thought he had him caught at short leg. There was a somewhat unedifying scene, as Parkinson made his feelings known to the umpire, which seemed to earn a rebuke to his captain and he wasn't quite so effective afterwards.

I thought the Zimbabwe-born Nathan Gilchrist was the pick of the visiting bowlers and produced some of the day's best deliveries, but it cannot be a lot of fun, at 295-2, to see Wayne Madsen walking out to bat.

The skipper looked a little sketchy at the start, but was quickly into one-day mode as the score mounted against an understandably tired attack. He kept Jewell company as the Australian took his score to 150 and his season tally past 600 runs, a fine effort in his first county summer.

This was what I wanted to see from Caleb. We all knew he could bat, had wonderful timing and real power. What we learnt today was that he can harness those assets to considerable concentration. Ahead of the T20, where we all know he will excite if he gets going, he has shown county supporters why very good judges back home still feel he could be the answer to Australia's opening problem, especially when Usman Khawaja retires.

A few more innings like today will see people sitting up and taking notice.

An excellent effort by Derbyshire, with power to add more tomorrow. It doesn't, to be fair, look like the sort of pitch where we can blow Kent away after racking up 600, but tiredness and pressure can do funny things.Madsen will be able to set aggressive fields and it would seem, at the end of day one, that it would be difficult to lose this one.

For a Derbyshire side to reach the halfway point of the red ball season, still unbeaten, would be quite remarkable.

Great stuff, lads!

  1. An excellent day's play. Great batting all day and it was good to see Caleb Jewell showing such discipline. Thank goodness we didn't put Kent in to bat. As Zimbabwe have demonstrated (and as was clear from our recent games, if it wasn't already obvious), inserting the opposition is only a good plan if the conditions really suit your bowlers. Doing it in the hope of a generous declaration and good run chase isn't really positive, and it's seldom going to work. We may struggle to get a win on this pitch, but mental fatigue might just be a problem for Kent.

  2. What a wonderful day! Excellent from Caleb Jewell who looked in the mood to bat long and for a big score from ball one. Feel sorry for Harry Came, he looked nailed on for a century.

Like you say, its all about mounting pressure now and seeing if Kent can stand up to it.

  3. What a day for Derbyshire. As dominant a days batting as we've seen in a long time.
At last the skipper chose to bat and the batters made hay.
Unfortunately I suspect that the weather might be the eventual winner of this game though hopefully not before Caleb gets that double ton.

  4. It doesn't get much better than this!A defeat looks unlikely now so bonus points are important and we could take 7.Top order really fired and Harry so unlucky to miss out.Get a huge score and hope the rain holds off and we could win this.Kent staring down the barrel and up against it.Topspinner

It really can’t get much better. A superb performance. I honestly doubted Jewell could bat a whole day. A amazing performance with so many lovely cover drives. It might prove very hard to get 20 wickets to win. A lot will depend on Compton who can stick around for days. We are looking a very good and well organised side and great credit to the management team and every player for pulling it round so much from last season

This is what we've been waiting for, win the toss and bat first. Great innings by Jewell, looks such an accomplished striker of the ball ably assisted by Came and Lloyd. My concern is that we'll not have enough ammo in our bowling ranks to bowl Kent out twice, but a fine first day all the same

  7. These are indeed Derbyshire salad days. Knew you were itching for a big 'un from the overseas pro Steve, and there could be more to come. I mentioned over the winter I'd watched him play for Tas, and always felt he was a good signing, even before this knock. With luck, he could go on and emulate some of the great Australians mentioned in your piece.
It would take quite something for us to lose from here. Leicestershire and Derbyshire. Aren't we two of the counties said to be superfluous to cricket's future by those allegedly in the know? What a really enjoyable two fingers, to them, this is!

    1. Can you imagine Yorkshire going back down to be with Middlesex and Lancashire and us and Leicestershire in division one. The ecb would probably cancel the championship next season. Ian from Suffolk

Excellent batting. Very gentle bowling being kind. Thought Came was absolutely plumb lbw myself!

nb. I meant Lloyd looked clearly lbw. Came was desperately unlucky of course.

  10. But for Harry Came unluckily missing out on a century that was about as perfect a day’s cricket as we would wish to see. I’m not sure our bowlers will be looking forward to toiling away on this wicket but we can’t fault the approach of the batters.

A week before we get into the T20s I wasn’t expecting to have to take evasive action from a six! It was a glorious shot from David Lloyd and my heart was in my mouth as it headed towards the dog and me. It was with some relief when it smashed into the seat in front!

Hopefully tomorrow we will see Caleb push on. He will rarely have a better chance of a double century and with a big total on the board we could put Kent under pressure.

  11. Excellent stuff, however I don't think we have the ammunition to take 20 wickets, especially without Reece & Tickner, and on this hybrid pitch. Is this why Madsen has been putting the opposition in?

    1. Apparently, this pitch isn't a hybrid.

    2. Is Reece not fit to bowl? Grant from Telford

    3. As far as I know he is, Grant. But they will monitor his workload after a hamstring issue

  13. A great watch. I thought both of the wickets we lost were a bit dubious/unlucky too. However, with the weather forecast and our depleted bowling attack, I can’t see us bowling them out twice. Hopefully a winning draw with decent bonus points will compensate. Grant from Telford.

  14. Brilliant day. There is a decreasing feeling of "here we go" when a wicket falls now - this side has plenty of confidence and skill right down the order. Just need, as many have said, to find a way of taking 20 wickets on a good track. Weather shouldn't interfere too much - aim for 650 plus, make 8 points safe then plug away. Congratulations to Caleb Jewell on an epic knock, and bad luck to Harrry Came who also played superbly.

  15. Will George Davidson’s score of 274 ever be bettered?
