Derbyshire 587-5
Kent 326 and 247 (Stewart 49, Reece 3-21, Brown 2-53, Chappell 2-58)
Derbyshire won by an innings and 14 runs
I wrote at the start of the season that a major factor for Derbyshire this season would be luck with the weather and holding their catches. Today the threatened rain failed to arrive, while some excellent catches were held, two of them by substitute fielder Nick Potts.
It was a strange morning, for all that. Muyeye was given out caught behind to the first ball of the day and it looked to come off his shoulder. Yet two other strong appeals were given not out, even though nothing other than the bat was near the ball. Very odd.
Derbyshire came out this morning with a pack mentality that was a joy to see. The fielding was sharp and after the early Muyeye dismissal, a fine catch by Guest, standing up to Reece, dismissed Benjamin. Leaning drove too soon at the same bowler and was well held by a tumbling Potts at mid off, while Finch was bowled by Dal off his thigh pad. When Parkinson, who can resist with the best of tail enders, was quickly trapped leg before by Morley, the end appeared to be nigh.
Yet Stewart, who displayed greater fight than most of his teammates, struck hard for 49 runs in a last wicket partnership of 64, taking on Brown and three times hitting him over the ropes.
Would Derbyshire need to bat again? Would the game extend to lunch and perhaps the victory quest be ruined by rain? No, because Brown induced a top edge and Potts, again making good ground and holding on as he dived, held a fine catch at third man and victory was completed, with Ball never likely to bat again with his injury.
So now we pause a heady red ball campaign for The Blast. Second in the league and still unbeaten as we enter June. Whatever happens from here, the Derbyshire players have given supporters a reason to be proud again. To take 20 wickets on a pitch that wasn't unduly difficult was a fine effort. Yet then again, so too was scoring 587 runs with the bat.
Again, without claiming psychic powers, I suggested that at the start of the season that only a team effort would bring Derbyshire success. Well, six of the seven bowlers used took wickets in this match. Of the others, Jewell scored a double century, Madsen a century, Came 89, Lloyd 50 and Guest set a standard in the field.
With such things, good seasons and great memories are made. Last year we could have been sponsored by Teflon. This year? Gorilla Glue..
Bring on the Blast. Ghazanfar is here, Samit's Falcons are set to fly...if he can do as well as Wayne's Wonders, we will be alright, eh?
So once again we fail to take 20 wickets !! Only joking 😉 A brilliant team effort. So refreshing to see .
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable Jeff 😉 Grant from Telford
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely delighted. The team is performing above even what the most optimistic of us expected. With the weakened bowling attack I didn't think we’d have enough but a full team effort produced one of the most dominating displays in a long time.
ReplyDeleteWe are the invincibles! 💪
ReplyDeletephenomenal work. delighted to see they proved me wrong. I didn't think they'd take 20 wickets (or 18 technically!) on this pitch . Even last night, I didn't think we'd take 7, let alone before lunch!
ReplyDeleteamazing work and they seem to playing as a real cohesive unit which seems to be making the difference.
bring on the t20!

Superb win at a crucial stage - just not Derbyshire is it? It is now! Well done to all - on to the Blast knowing that we have a real crack at promotion to look forward to beyond that.
ReplyDeleteAnother absolutely brilliant display and in the end a easy win. The top 3 are now opening up a big gap on the other teams so promotion really does look a possibility especially with the whole team looking so good not just 3 or 4 players. I’m now having a long sleep cricket wise until the next round of championship matches but good luck to the mighty Derbyshire and their fans in the 20/ 20
ReplyDeleteIf only we knew what positions, if any, will get promotion!

Yes, and if they needed any more reason not to have promotion, then us and Leicestershire finishing in the top two, would just about clinch it!
DeleteAs you say Steve the wicket wasn't particularly helpful to the bowlers. It hasn't been all season. The fundamental difference is we batted first and then put them under pressure as opposed to batting under pressure ourselves. Hopefully a lesson learned.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent effort by the team ,I did have doubts about taking 20 wickets but a combination of hard work by the bowling unit , indifferent Kent batting and Jake Ball”s injury saw us home with 2 sessions to spare . The team look really together as a group and have a resilience not seen in recent times . Credit to the wider leadership team for creating where we are so far .
ReplyDeletePlease wake me up.
ReplyDeleteI keep dreaming that Derbyshire are 2nd in the table and are unbeaten at the half way stage of the season.
On 2nd thoughts don't wake me up.
I'm really enjoying it.
What a statement win that was. Never saw us bowling Kent out twice in a couple of days, incredible effort seeing as we were without Aichison and Tickner as well. Well done Derbyshire now on to the T20
ReplyDeleteIsn't it refreshing to talk about the team in a positive manner after the past 2 awful seasons! Wayne has got the boys fired uo and we will fight to the last.Bring on the Blast with confidence and give the League a good go afterwards.Topspinner
ReplyDeleteA wonderful victory. I wasn't able to check our progress until shortly after midday and couldn't believe Kent were 8 wickets down. A brilliant all round performance and great to see us sitting pretty at second in the table.
ReplyDeleteSuperb commanding performance by Derbyshire and congratulations to all. We would have taken second place if offered it at the start of the season. There seems to be a real team spirit and will to win: Potts took two excellent catches as sub for example. The rest of the season is highly promising.
ReplyDeleteAllez Derbyshire
When was the last time before today that Derbyshire won a County Championship game by an innings?

DeleteIt’s great to see the team perform on the pitch and the supporters getting behind them on here. After 12 months of negativity and at times, personal vitriol against the coach and players, it’s great to see (almost) the same set of players, playing to their potential and with freedom of expression
ReplyDeleteNot personal vitriol on here, Steve, as I wouldn't allow it. But yes, it has been bad in some places
DeleteIt’s been rather good fun so far, hasn’t it? Well done lads, keep it up.
