So what next for Derbyshire?

As I mentioned in my previous post, the departure of Sam Conners leaves Derbyshire with a gap in their resources that needs to be filled.

While acknowledging we have a raft of all rounders who bowl seam, only Zak Chappell and Pat Brown can be regarded certainties as specialist seam bowlers for next year. I am sure we all hope that Ben Aitchison is fit and ready to fire next April and there is no doubt that Harry Moore looks a serious talent. Yet there have to be question marks over the former and the latter will only be available outside of school commitments.

I suspect Ben will get another deal at the county, because he is a fine player. Equally, I expect it to be dependent on fitness and we must hope that whatever remodelling of his action and/or run up is required doesn't change his ability to move the ball. At his best, he and Zak Chappell will be among the best opening attacks in division two, while Ben's safe hands will again be appreciated in the slip cordon, not to mention his ability to bat and lengthen the tail.

We will almost certainly need an overseas seamer to supplement them and that player has to be of a better standard than we had this year. No disrespects, but averages of 44 (DD) and 61 (Tickner) simply aren't good enough for those crucial roles.

Yet there will certainly be a scouring of the domestic market and two players come to mind.

Toby Pettman is out of contract at Nottinghamshire and given their proclivity for picking up players elsewhere he seems down the pecking order at Trent Bridge. At 26 he has still played only eleven first-class matches, but has 44 wickets in them at 23 runs each. I would be surprised if there were not offers from elsewhere this year and quite disappointed if he thought continuing at Trent Bridge was in the best interest of his career.

The 6'7 seamer is talented, as we saw in his brief loan spell at Derbyshire and for me he would be a logical replacement for Sam Conners.

Another option would be at our happy hunting ground of Lancashire and Jack Blatherwick. Also 26, he is contracted until the end of 2025,  but counties rarely stand in the way of players who decide there are better options elsewhere.

He has only played 15 first class matches and his record is less impressive than Pettman, but good judges rate him and at this time in his life he needs to be playing in front of more than three men and a dog in second team cricket.

He took 8-65 against our second team at Denby this week and dismissed Wagstaff, Naeem and Thomson among an admittedly inexperienced batting line up. He also took the only wicket, that of Harry Came, when Lancashire were trounced by us in the One Day Cup.

It is not a vintage year for out of contract players. Nor do I see Derbyshire being able to attract a big name from another county and pay towards their breaking the contract.

Which makes the rumoured interest in Luke Procter understandable. I accept he is 36, but he is a very good player, averaging 50 with the bat and with 19 wickets at 32 with the ball this year. If such a player was notionally interested in joining your club, you would be daft to not at least explore the possibilities. A player equally adept at opening the batting and taking the new ball if required, what's not to like?

It promises to be an interesting few weeks, with possible further outgoings and people coming the other way, as is professional sport.

If we can build on the positive last few weeks, it might send us all into the long winter in a positive frame of mind.

Of course we have been there before. But you never know...

  1. For myself , it’s very simple next year we must sign a high class strike bowler and a top 4 batsman ideally for all formats … Realistically thinking Aitchison and Potts will come through, is a risk based on form and fitness over the last 2 seasons . In addition Chappell Brown and Moore will need careful management to ensure fitness is maintained . Would be nice to hear some critical reflection from the Club on the recruitment, lessons learnt etc … It can be done but I also respect its tough with global franchise cricket all year round … Handscomb is a great example , Klinger , Di Venuto in days gone by .. Wishing Sam Conners all the best and he’s joined a club on the upward trajectory

  2. Whilst I hope you are right about getting a high class overseas seamer, I think you are slightly deluded in thinking this.

I don't actually think they are there in the first place, and that does seem to be backed up with what we got this year.

Also I wouldn't be happy for a bowler who only comes for three or four games. What we really need is a full season, but they are like hens teeth.

I do however hope you are right and I am wrong.

  3. I don't think we are too far from a very decent T20 team, though I hadn't anticipated Connors leaving... but I have no issue replacing him with the talented Harry Moore.

So for next season's T20 I would like to see the following order:

    Lloyd [Anchor]
    Donald [Biffer]
    Madsen [Anchor]
    Whiteley [Biffer]
    Guest [wk] [Anchor]
    O/S Biffer
    Patel [c]
    Chappell
    Moore
    O/S Left Arm Spin magician
    Brown

The batting strategy is quite simple. The top order batsmen are given one of two clear roles; an anchor or a biffer. For the first 10/12 overs the anchor is to set a 'tempo' with ones and twos, despatching the occasional boundary from a bad ball, while the biffer has license to play the more 'expansive' game, incorporating the rather unorthodox white ball shots. When one of these batsmen are out he is replaced by one of the same role, so anchor replaces anchor, biffer replaces differ.

If the team has used up these first 6 by the end of 12 overs, we are likely to be in trouble! This line up is blessed with Patel & Chappell at 7 & 8 who both can hit boundaries but a role is given to them depending on the match situation, swapping anchor/biffer role with the incumbent if necessary. That is until the last 2 overs when 'biffing' by both is the order of the day.

What I would like to see Mickey Arthur do for the T20 overseas roles is to 1] find us one of those South African types that smack the ball out of the park for fun [employed for T20 only]. 2] a sub continent left arm spinning magician to offer variety and asks questions of the opposition. [Possibly employed for white & red ball.]

Surely in his time in world cricket he has an address book and contacts that can source one each of these. [Plus an O/S international opening batsmen for 'red ball']

    Thank you for listening.

    1. Conners didn’t play in the T20 for us, or very rarely. So don’t think it will affect our T20 plans too much.

  4. In my honest opinion would be better focusing on signing one quality overseas player who is available for the whole season irrespective of role (Masood or Purara type figure) would make a real difference. Mix and matching for CC & T20, getting a journeyman from NZ or Sri Lanka rarely works.
Again if have to split CC to before and after Hundred still concentrate on getting one good player - for example Chahal at Nhants.
A good player elevates the whole team.

  5. For me the number one priority for next season in the CC is a Masood-type overseas batsman, someone who can keep the scoreboard ticking over, find the boundary when required, and go on to play a big innings. And I agree that a great player elevates the team. That's exactly what Masood did.

  6. I’m in full agreement that Pettman is best served to fill the void. It’s a hard pass on Blatherwick for me. Bowls much too short consistently and the numbers back it up.

I’ve stumbled across the stats on X of bowlers who have sent down at least 100 overs since 2023. Key highlights…

    Between 100 - 130 overs
    Blatherwick - 9 wickets @ 65.67 (albeit in Div 1)
    Pat Brown - 7 wickets @ 64.57

    Over 300 overs
    Dal - 32 wickets @ 42.67
    Zaman Akhtar -
    Over 400 overs
    Conners - 34 wickets @ 51.35.

  7. I stumbled across some interesting bowling stats on X of bowlers that have sent down 100+ overs since 2023. Some notable stats include:

    Blatherwick (Div 1) - 128 overs, 9 wickets @ 65.67
    Brown (Div 2) - 100 overs, 7 wickets @ 64.57
    Conners (Div 2) - 435 overs, 34 wickets @ 51.35
    Zaman Ahkter (Div 2) - 343 overs, 33 wickets @ 42.97
    Dal (Div 2) - 372 overs, 30 wickets @ 42.67

    Key takeaways
    - It’s a hard pass on Blatherwick for me. Bowls too short consistently. Pettman is a much better option despite JB offering more with the bat.
    - Given Akhter was called up by the Lions, it shows how important Dal is to us. Should be one of the first names on the team sheet and treated with a little more respect.
