Derbyshire v Glamorgan day 4

Glamorgan 168 and 287 (Morley 3-46)

Derbyshire 429 and 27-0

Derbyshire won by ten wickets

So the end came, as hoped and largely expected, before lunch. Luis Reece despatched successive leg stump full tosses from Sam Northeast to fine leg for boundaries, to wrap up an outstanding ten wicket win.

This was the sort of cricket we hoped for with the red ball when Derbyshire appointed Mickey Arthur, but it has too seldom been seen so far. Yet the displays in the one day cup, closely followed by the excellent effort in this game, suggest that the corner is, if not being turned, being approached with due care and attention.

We should not overlook that it could have been considerably different had David Lloyd not won the toss on the first day. But how many matches are won and loss on that coin toss? Had we made the right decision after winning it at Chesterfield, this could have been the second in that win column.

Nor should it be overlooked that the game was won without an overseas player and with limping personnel that are rapidly becoming like extras in The Walking Dead, with muscle and ligament injuries. As I have said all summer, the talent is in this squad in spades. Perhaps it has just taken longer than it should have to sink in, but the performance here was professional with a capital P.

It would be nice to think that we could replicate this between now and the end of the season, always assuming we can patch people up sufficiently to keep eleven bodies on the pitch. David Lloyd did well against his erstwhile employers, while this was an excellent all-round team performance. It was also fitting that Reece sealed the win, having played a pivotal role the last time a game was won here, 1803 days ago. Two of the three wickets today, plus the winning runs constituted a decent morning's work by him.

The personnel have changed a lot since that last win, but maybe, just maybe, our fortunes are starting to as well.

Well done lads. That was a proper performance, one you can be proud of.

Just like we are.

  2. So pleasing to see us put on a performance like that. Hopefully we can patch up the bowling attack and finish the season strong.

  3. Welcome news from HQ and not before time. Hopefully this is a turning point in our fortunes and we can end the season on a high with some optimism for the following season. Obviously the toss was a big factor but it shouldn’t take anything away from a very good team performance. The bowling in the first innings was excellent notwithstanding the beneficial conditions with Zak continuing a fine season. Also good to see Pat Brown in the longer format as he is a quality bowler.

The batting was equally effective with some solid knocks from Harry Came, Wayne Madsen, Anuj Dal and David Lloyd.

When was the last time we were firing on all cylinders? Seems like a long time ago. Just odd that we win without an overseas player in sight. Hopefully the winter recruitment will address that issue and we can celebrate more victories.

  4. Glammy made it harder in the second innings and sold there wickets hard, really glad the heads didn't drop and the boys never lost the will to win. Really deserved and so happy for the team and Mr Arthur.

Still slightly worried at the number of catches we seem to drop, but it something we can work on.

Onwards and upwards, what a turn around since the Cheshire game.

    1. We have seemed to drop an astonishing amount of catches this season and a few to many that definitely should have been taken.

Lots of catching practice in the winter lads 😂

It was mentioned previously, on this blog, that more comments were made after defeat than victory. I made a conscious point at that moment to ensure I congratulate the team when they next won! Keep up the good work; though Arthur saying in his interview that the team had 'stumbled' onto the winning formula made me raise on eyebrow :)

    1. I too found that a strange/telling comment!

Made it down to see the winning runs yesterday, it was bloody cold but worth it, the team looked happy with good morale.

    2. He could have done with expanding on that comment for clarity. I think he was getting at conditions making bowling first a must and Brown and Morley probably not playing and Lloyd not bowling if not for injuries. All of which were crucial to the win.

  7. Excellent victory, achieved as has been mentioned without any overseas input.

Although the victories in the one day cup were against weakened sides, the confidence gained from those wins must have helped. 'Momentum' eh! Long may it continue 🤞

  8. July and August have been excellent, 9 wins. I doubted we'd win another game at all, after the Yorkshire 4 dayer. Pat Brown has shown some 4 day potential and Dal and Came's returns have been vital. Kris

  9. Great performance. Let's see if we can continue in this vein in the last four games. Chappell has had an outstanding season with both bat and ball.
