Warwickshire v Derbyshire One Day Cup

Derbyshire 247-9 (Lloyd 65, Guest 57, Hannon-Dalby 4-49, Brookes 3-44)

Warwickshire 248-6 (Rhodes75, Burgess 46, Bethell 44, Reece 4-43)

Warwickshire won by 4 wickets

At the halfway stage of this game, I felt that Derbyshire had a pretty good chance of winning it.

The first innings total was not overly impressive, but on a pitch where timing was elusive, there was spin for bowlers and big boundaries, everything was in Derbyshire's favour.

Yet we didn't bowl particularly well. Luis Reece was the pick of the bowlers and Alex Thomson the best of our spin trio, but it is fair to say that Warwickshire's spinners - one of them a part time bowler and another a 17-year old debutant - outbowled our equivalent. I thought Taseem Ali bowled splendidly for them and looks set for a bright future.

George Rhodes played the decisive innings, mixing sound defence with good running and placement. He received good support, but I don't think the visiting bowlers did very well here.

Earlier, a good innings from David Lloyd and a more belligerent one from Brooke Guest got Derbyshire close to 250. It should have ensured a closer finish than it was and the end of the game also signalled the end of Derbyshire's interest in this competition for 2023, at least for me.

It is time to try a few players now. It makes sense to offer opportunity to players who have a part to play in the future and I would like to see Wagstaff, Wood and Moore given a chance in the remaining fixtures.

At the very least, the sight of three academy products in the Derbyshire eleven will be something for supporters to cheer.

In all fairness, this competition again has given little else. We have generally batted OK, but shorn of several senior bowlers, we simply haven't been able to compete.

  1. I didn't watch the game but the fact that Reece's wickets were all clean bowled or LBW surely shows the benefit of bowling at the stumps rather than all over the place.

Another disappointment in what has been a pretty wretched season full stop. If only we had the money at Derbyshire to make multiple changes this winter to the playing squad, because I honestly believe that's what we need to do.
I won't name the players that I would get rid of but I'm at six.
Did Mickey Arthur expect this season to be as bad as this way back in April, I honestly didn't. Bitterly disappointing doesn't even come in to it, big changes needed this winter

  3. I think the selection of the team been poor this year. I have lost count where before the game I have thought that not the right selection. That surprises me with the coaching set up. We messed up not getting opener combination
Correct in championship. This followed by the Blast we took too long to realise we needed Came and Wood for the power. This competition playing 3 spinners when should be Wood or Lamb is so obvious. Why are they making these mistakes that are quite basic?

I think getting clearer who going to be released this season. The rebuild is far greater than Micky thought and awaiting the quote where he say need this winter and following to sort it out.

What think is key for Derbyshire is to get extension for Chappell next.

  4. The only positive regarding replacing DH with MA is his contacts in Pakistan IMO little else has changed in the last two years

      Correct, we've stagnated massively

  5. There’s a pattern in the four games we’ve lost in the Metro Bank competition. Reece, Came, Ali, Lloyd, Guest, and Madsen have put runs on the board, laying the foundation for what should have been a good score. But, as the stats show, we have failed to capitalise on this in the latter part of the innings.

v Gloucestershire: 205-3 to 298-9, 93 runs for six wickets.
    v Glamorgan: 241-2 to 298-8, 57 runs for 6 wickets
    v Durham: 218-4 to 306 all out, 82 runs for 6 wickets
    v Warwickshire: 178-3 to 247-9, 69 runs for 6 wickets

Regarding our bowling, overall, I think it’s been pretty average.

It seems clear that when you look at our performances in all formats, we have gone backwards from the promise we showed last season. We’ve played 27 games and won just seven.

Mickey likes talking about players executing their skills and managing games. Sadly, we haven’t seen enough of this.

If Steve has time at some point, I'd like him to do a piece on how he thinks the progress of Derbyshire has been under Mickey's tenure. Would make for an interesting read

  8. Came, Reece, du Plooy, Thomson and Madsen can come out of this season with real credit and not inconsistency. I'm afraid 5 isn't enough for a successful season. I'm not sure how this 3 spinners idea works either. Kris

  9. I find myself scratching around to try and explain why we have performed so poorly this season after building momentum last season. And I wonder if Mickey taking on the Pakistan coach role has anything to do with it. Does he have less time to devote to the club with an extra commitment? I've no idea.

Last season's captain is now exiled in the Liverpool and District League, plying his trade as an opener for Rainhill, while the current captain has chose to leave at the end of the season. If du Plooy really believed in Mickey's "project", then why has he decided to go to Middlesex, who are, like us, having a poor season? Is it just the money he was offered? Or is there something else? I'm simply speculating. These factors might have nothing to do with our poor performances. But you do wonder how things are in the dressing room, given the expectations there must have been for this season.

  10. I don't think for a moment that Mickey Arthur will be at all happy with the present situattion at Derbyshire perhaps both on and off the field. Admittedly he has said ver support off the field y little but in fairness support has been lacking. Half the preset team are just not of the required standard consistently in order to achieve any kind of success and I understand support off the field in the management structure has not worked well at all. Literally anything could happen in the close season and we should all be prepared .

    1. Historically most of our appointed head coaches have lasted 2 years before being removed from the position owing to poor results. A few head coaches usually leave citing a lack of finance hampering their plans to improve the clubs playing record. I fully expect something similar within 18 months.

  11. I agree with Ray - I've been consistent in questioning the lack of ambition and cricketing knowledge off the field. Here's 2 examples: 1) We are obsessed with making a profit, which is noble but we are a sports team not a business first and foremost. We should have brought in an extra bowler (on loan or signed) last year and this year. Instead poor Sam Conners had to play almost every game last season - not conducive to a pace bowler, and may have contributed to his injuries this season - and I think everyone would agree bowling has been our weakest suit this season and last. 2) Overseas signings have not come off, which are crucial for us. But worse than that, both have been gambles - Lakmal is experienced and a Test bowler yes, but ageing, injury prone and his record in England is poor. Ali is a precocious young talent who has contributed little more than a few cameos this tournament, and whose technique was suited to, and experience was, mainly in the middle order (never mind the lengthy delay to switch him to the middle order to the detriment of the team and to Tom Wood, as often noted). In Mickey we trust (I still do!), but is there anyone at board level constructively challenging the decisions made? I think we know the answer to that question. Our biggest pre-season signing could be at board level.

    1. I raised this question to Ryan Duckett. I was concerned that while Colin Tuncliffe offer experience. The modern game has changed lot and that at board level his experience alone wasn’t enough. He kindly replied and said that re election up for Colin in 2024. This isn’t a dig at Tuncliffe it’s just look at board it’s obvious one cricket brain and rest are all business isn’t good for a cricket club. You need accountability when you doing a job. There wasn’t much in Dave Houghton era and Mickey factor worn off now.

    2. I wrote a comment on here a few weeks ago regarding my opinion that the management board were more interested in rinsing money out of people at T20 matches than the actual cricket,I also agree the communication between the club and supporters is dire compare that to Paul Farbraces in-depth analysis on YouTube after a recent match against Derbyshire

  12. PJS - very disappointed with this season after much optimism bias built up. I could not understand why we fielded 3 'spinners' on the first occasion and was baffled why we decided to repeat it again. Our 'strength' has been batting, yet we went into each match with only 6 recognised batsmen, exposing a very long tail, and despite showing we were more capable of chasing a score, than defending, won the toss and duly chose to bat. Am I missing something? Very poor decisions and Mickey Arthur may have a book filled with 'contacts' but while he is busy planning his test campaign, his part time, day job-cum 'project' is failing.

    1. The pitch was offering turn. They played 3 spinners, and they were better than ours. I suspect at least 2 of ours will not be here next season...

  13. Mickey must be aware that the club's fans are disappointed, given the progress last season. So, why doesn't he do some interviews to put everyone in the picture, as far as he can? Communication is part of the job of being head coach. Billy disappeared and went into exile in Merseyside without a word from anyone at the club. If Dave Fletcher is right, something has gone on behind the scenes.

In contrast, Paul Warne is brilliant at talking to the media after a Derby match. He's, refreshingly, honest, and doesn't avoid interviews after defeats.

Very well said, the silence from Mickey this last couple of months is deafening. The last time we heard anything from him was when we failed to qualify from the T20 group

  14. Can't disagree with any of the comments above. However, just maybe MA isn't the top class coach the cricket world seem to think he is and I'm sure we all hoped for?
Did he just get lucky last season with the one season in a lifetime form of Masood (no trees seem to have been pulled up before or after) and the very welcome return to form of vintage Mads?
Last years captain left with barely a murmur and now this years skipper is on his bike.
Despite his very evident fitness worries Lakmal was given another chance to lead the attack and has underwhelmed to say the least.
Haider has shown glimpses of what may come but was presumably a cheap gamble and not what was needed for our overseas batsman.
We dont know how much of this is down to the coach or the board as its very rare for anyone (particularly MA) to front up to the media.
It's very difficult not to feel extremely short changed.

  15. An interesting stat about our group in the Metro Bank competition. Seventeen centuries have been scored, so far. Only ourselves and Worcestershire haven't registered one. Northants and Gloucestershire lead the way with four each.

While our top order has done well, no one has played a match winning innings. Haider Ali has threatened to do this, but has never quite managed it. Overall, I think he's had a decent season, given his age and the fact that he's never played in England before. Perhaps this season will be a precursor to the one next year when we see him take apart an attack and smash the ball to all parts.

One of our problems with batting has been not having anyone coming in lower down the order with proven ability to play aggressively and get us an extra 30 or 40 runs in quick time. I don't think either Thomson or McKiernan have demonstrated that they can do this on a consistent basis. With regards to Conners, Watt, Potts, and Lakmal, they are traditional tail enders, who might hit a couple of boundaries, but that's it.

Dal needs to come in at seven or eight. He is someone who can score rapidly, but more by pushing ones and twos and hitting the odd four rather than going big. He averaged over 90 in the seconds T20 competition, and hit four half centuries. Last season, he showed that he's a proper batsman, scoring nearly 1,000 runs, including three centuries.

When we get down to Thomson, McKiernan, Watt, Conners/Potts and Lakmal, I feel that we are down to the tail and that enough runs are not going to come and those that do come won't be scored quickly enough.
