Durham v Derbyshire One Day Cup

Durham 333-8 (Clark 89, Lees 62, Jones 56, Trevaskis 76* Thomson 3-53)

Derbyshire 306 (Madsen 65, Guest 63, Came 44 Pretorius 4-56)

Durham won by 27 runs

There were several points during a valiant, but vain run by Derbyshire today when I thought that they had this game in the bag.

The turning point, for me, was the questionable leg before decision against Haider Ali, who looked in fine touch. He also looked to be outside the line of off stump and obviously playing a shot when he was given out. The scorebook doesn't tell the whole story, but Haider had to go.

He and Madsen had looked to be in control, as later did Guest and Thomson. But wickets fell to shots that were not really necessary given the game situation and Derbyshire, having played three spinners and omitted Anuj Dal, perhaps rued the decision later in the day.

McKiernan also fell to a shot he didn't need to play first ball and although the chase was admirable, I was left with a feeling of what might have been.

It was good to see Madsen back and batting beautifully, just as Guest did later. But the Durham attack did well and were exceptionally backed up in the field, where several fine catches were held.

I thought Alex Thomson had a good all round match for Derbyshire, but the not very north east-sounding pairing of Trevaskis and Pretorius bowled too well at the death. A required rate that at one point was just above five an over climbed to north of eight and we couldn't get there, with wickets falling at too frequent intervals.

Earlier Lees and Clark batted very well and looked set for a huge total, but a fightback put Derbyshire to parity before Trevaskis, with an unbeaten 76 from just 54 balls, took the game away again

While qualification is still possible, Derbyshire have to win all their matches from here.

I am not convinced that we can, but time will tell, as it always does.

One that got away, for me. Just as when we played here in the Vitality Blast.

  1. I thought Durham's bowling and general outfield was comical and amateurish at times, the 50 over cup has been so downgraded by the 100 and test players being rested, as a long standing county member I feel I am being short-changed with a tournament which is no more than a second 11 and development players cup nothing wrong with that on its own but it's a far cry from the NatWest trophy as county crickets premier one day cup competition

  2. The third defeat in four games in the one day cup. Our top order have done well, but once we get down to the lower middle and tail enders we fall apart. Despite the efforts of Came, Madsen and Guest, no one made the kind of score that could have been a match winning innings. down the wicket.

  3. Sadly another game thrown away. For long periods we needed less than a run a ball and though we had lost wickets sensible batting would have seen us home. Many teams find a way of winning, Derbyshire find a way of losing. Paul

  4. I have to wonder why we played 3 spinners and omitted Dal. His batting has been disappointing of late but his bowling might have contained the Durham batsmen more effectively than Watt and McKiernan. Possibly a selection decision that cost us the match?

  5. I think all the players knew Haider wasn't out, but errors happen. I do question if we've picked the right side on occasion during this tournament, but I suppose we'll Neve know if Dal with the bat, would have seen us over the line. Kris

  6. I took the day off and drove up to see the match. I thought we had it in the bag but I was reflecting when we were 4 down that unless Madsen and Guest stayed in, we would be up against it. If Dal was fit he should’ve been playing. As it was, everyone from 7-10 was probably batting a place too high. It’s also worth remembering Wayne’s comment about the Blast this year, that batters need to kick on from 40s and 50s to make really big scores if we are going to win regularly. Anyway it was a very sunny day at lovely ground! But after the high of Wednesday, it was a disappointing result.

  7. And where is Billy Godleman. Instead of 3 spinners, pick him as a “finisher “ batting at 6 or 7!

    1. Billy is no longer at the club, although it hasn't been announced, presumably for legal reasons - see my post a few weeks back at http://derbyshirecricket.blogspot.com/2023/06/billy-godleman.html?m=1

  8. 'Sam', I am not publishing your comment because I don't allow personal stuff on players on this blog. If you wish to send again and make it less of a rant, I will consider it. But I thought certain aspects of what you said were unfair and unwarranted

  9. Sorry Peakfan. In retrospect my comment was too personal and too close to the end of play, when my emotions were high. I fully agree with your decision.

    1. Thanks, Sam. Sport can be frustrating, but worthwhile comment is generally made when we have all calmed down.

I look forward to your continued involvement!
