Derbyshire v. Leicestershire day 4

Leicestershire 122 and 281 (Hill 63, Handscomb 62, Patel 58, Wright 45* Conners 3-75 Watt, 3-35)

Derbyshire 350-7 declared and

Match drawn

How did not been for yesterday's rain, Derbyshire would have been celebrating a first win of the season tonight.

As it is, they came close but fine batting by Patel, Hill, Handscomb and Wright enabled Leicestershire to escape with a draw. The innings of the latter, who faced over a hundred balls, was key to their survival.

I thought Derbyhire bowled fairly well, but again there is not enough devilment in the wicket to enable the win to be forced.

Still, the performance was better and if it can be maintained at this standard then prospects for the season are better than they seemed a few days ago.

The end of the game was something of a shambles, as the umpires sought guidance on the time that was left in the game. It was both a poor reflection on the officials and on the laws of the game itself that the two sides went back out for a farcical and meaningless final over, relevant only for the visitor's attempt to improve their tardy over rate.

Supporters and players deserve better.

PS warm congratulations to Sam Conners, who took his hundredth first class wicket today.

He is a talented lad..

  1. A much improved attitude and a better outcome. But we lack dynamism and inventiveness and so will fail to rise above the level of mediocrity. Obviously we were aided significantly in this match by a fine performance from the loanee Brooks so its difficult to assess progress. Very underwhelmed by the overall performance so far.

    2. The attack does lack that X factor that a good overseas recruit can bring.

    3. With an overseas strike bowler we would have won that game …

  2. It seemed a strange decision to not carry on with Mark Watt after tea

  3. Lots of "If onlys" about this game, the most important being if the third day hadn't been almost completely washed out we would have won!

  4. A good team performance that would probably have resulted in the win had the weather not intervened. And, of course, we had an episode of Carry On Umpire. That was bizarre.

We should be in good shape for the Gloucestershire game. None of our batsmen have made it to a century, so far. I expect at least on of them to do it this week. My money's on Ali to do this, as we haven't seen the best of him yet.

  5. Good performance, we outplayed them from start to finish. Hard to be critical, when half the game was a washout. Good to see Conners back with the new ball. Kris

  6. As good an overall performance it was twice in the march the Derbyshire captain allowed the game to drift after lunch on the first day when Leics were seven down instead of keeping Brookes on went back to his opening bowlers who then bowled dross for the next hour and then on the fourth day Leicestershire were seven down at tea with Mark Watt bowling well he once again returned to his opening bowlers after tea who once again wasted time bowling dross and allowed Leicestershire to escape
