Weekend warmer

It was great to see the bumper crowd that attended the bonfire night celebrations at the Incora County Ground on Friday.

An equally successful festive season will be perfect for Derbyshire, generating the crucial off field income that will allow Mickey Arthur the money required to improve fortunes on the field.

I doubt that anyone is unhappy with the way that the winter has gone so far. Logically, all that remains is the recruitment of the overseas player, or players to replace Shan Masood.

I am not sure if the World Cup has featured those players, but there have been some standout performers. I was less impressed with Sikandar Raza as the tournament went on, his batting looking a little too frenetic against good bowlers. His bowling was more impressive and while I am sure there will still be interest from the county circuit, the recent recruitment of Mark Watt pretty much legislates against him being on Derbyshire's radar. I can't see us needing four spinners, with two then unlikely to play much cricket.

One player who has impressed me has been Suryakumar Yadav of India, who batted well against Derbyshire last year. He seems to have elastic wrists and some of the shots he has played have been quite spectacular. I was surprised to find out that he is 32 and thought him a younger man. Which in its own way speaks volumes both for the sheer quantity of talent in that country, as well as the merits of the later developer.

It is a shame that Indian players cannot play in the Vitality Blast, as most of their stellar line up would be huge draws. It is hard to gauge though whether any would be equally successful, or interested in a contract for longer form matches.

I would be surprised if Mickey Arthur was able to find a player available for most of the season, as Masood was last year. Even more so if that player was as successful. While not in any way meaning to diminish his efforts, he perhaps had the best early season wickets for a decade on which to bat, while Suranga Lakmal probably thought he had arrived in the wrong country, with what he had to bowl on.

It could be that this time next year we are all hailing the latter, if April sees more traditional English wickets. I suspect had he not had the elbow injury, some of the wickets as the season progressed would have been perfect for his talents.

As a bit of fun, here's some nice thoughts to occupy you over the next few days.

Which Derbyshire overseas player of the past would you recruit to enhance the current squad?

I am going to ban the selection of Eddie Barlow, because anyone who saw him would appreciate that him in the side would automatically improve it by 20%, regardless of his individual contribution.

There is no right or wrong answer, but I would be curious and delighted to see everyone's thoughts. I will then tell you my decision next week.

Have a good one!

  1. John Wright might be a useful replacement for Masood!

Incidentally, Mitchell Santner, in whom Derbyshire were interested a couple of seasons ago, is looking a good player in the World Cup.

  2. For me, Michael Holding. I think we need one more quick in the present squad to cover injuries and (I'm delighted to say) England call-ups and Mikey would inflict serious damage in all formats as one of the best-ever pacemen on the planet. And what a leader for the pace department!

  3. Agreed that it is difficult to argue against Michael Holding. Beyond him, Peter Kirsten for 4 day cricket and Adrian Kuiper for the Blast.

  4. Buck Rogers for all formats - i think batters need strengthening, the bowlers are covered - no chance of call ups for our lads (at times in the recent past we would have laughed even dreaming of national call ups - Derbyshire and the Incora CG do not register is the ECB SatNav's)

  5. I think we need an opening batsman so as my first choice (John Wright) has already been spoken for - how’s about Lawrence Rowe! Bruce currently in Sydney

  6. If it's not Eddie, then the need for an opener would suggest Wright/Rogers would be good shouts. However, for me it would have to be Kirsten. With him at 3 it wouldn't really matter if the openers were rubbish!!

  7. I'd go for Peter Kirsten. IMagine him in the T20!

My early memories of watching Derbyshire include Michael Holding, John Wright and Peter Kirsten. John Wright would probably be the sensible choice for the current team, but to see Michael Holding in his prime again would be a rare treat.

More recently we have been treated to a number of New Zealanders who would give a massive boost to a one day team. Hard to choose between Martin Guptill, Locke Ferguson and Jimmy Neesham.

  9. Adrian Kuiper - perfect T20 player. Likely to affect matches on an above average ratio. He'd be my choice!

  10. Coloradoram: like many already I would have to go for JW as the reliable opener and I agree with Phil C that we need a frontline bowler, so MH for me.

  11. Indulging in this fantasy, I wouldn’t be disappointed with either John Wright or Chris Rogers as Shan’s replacement across all formats. Personally, though, I’d opt for Peter Kirsten.

To return to reality, I found the knock by opener Litton Das (60 off 27 balls - for Bangladesh in the run chase against India a week ago) very stylish and exciting. I’d not heard of him prior. Your thoughts, please, Peakfan: Might he be a suitably affordable option for a T20-contracted batsman?
    Matt.

    1. Hi Matt sorry about the delayed reply.

He is a good player, certainly affordable, but with very little experience, if any in this country. His record suggests that he is a player to keep an eye on, although I am unsure as to how much of that record has been made against the better international sides.

      Decent call though!

    1. i have recently lost much of my respect for him after he was quoted in the September edition of the excellent publication County Cricket Matters when asked his opinion on reducing the number of counties. " I have no problems with that. You could put two counties together like DCCC and NCCC. They're just across the motorway from each other so they could have one team and the cream would rise to the top ". We all know that would be an instant death knell for us. Michael is a clever bloke but in this case I was disappointed (and disgusted) with his comment. What price loyalty ? And from a former DCCC President !!

    2. There is an hour long documentary on Sky about Michael Holding called "whispering death" it mentioned s his time at Lancashire but fails to mention his five year at Derbyshire

    3. I think he spent only one season at Lancs. Get your act together Sky!

Azharuddin for me, what a top batsman he was, a joy to watch

  14. Martin Guptill would be my choice. Helped big-time to win our promotion. All went a bit pear-shaped when he was unavailable that season
