Derbyshire v Durham day 1

Derbyshire 306 all out (du Plooy 82, Came 78, Dal 52, Rushworth 3-60, Raine 3-61)

v Durham

I don't think that Derbyshire will be at all disappointed with their first day's work at Derby today.

To be honest, I feared the worst when we lost the toss and had to face the not inconsiderable talents of Rushworth and Raine on a lively track.

We were soon in trouble with the first three wickets back in the pavilion with unseemly haste. It was the partnership between Guest and du Plooy that restored a little equilibrium, but when Guest departed the advent of Came saw a stand that may yet prove to be match-defining.

Their stand of 143 runs was outstanding, on a wicket where there was variable pace and bounce all day. From the City End several balls kept very low later in the day and Derbyshire will be very pleased to have 300 runs on the board to work with.

Neither batsman made it to three figures, but on a perfect wicket for a game that we really need to win, that was not a surprise. But both were very impressive and while we know the talents of du Plooy, Came has shown in recent weeks that he just might have the makings of a batsman of real talent at this level.

He has become much better in his judgement of the balls to leave, much better in giving the bad ball the treatment, much tighter in defence. I could see him kicking on next season and becoming the latest to respond to the excellent coaching at the club.

There is certainly assistance for the seam bowlers and I think Mark Watt will enjoy bowling on here too. While we don't know how much play will be possible over the next 3 days, Derbyshire have given themselves every opportunity to force a win in their efforts today.

The late resistance from Dal took us to a position of prosperity from the earlier travails and the first session tomorrow promises to be very interesting indeed.

A good days cricket for sure.

Postscript: there were 86 runs for Tom Wood in the second eleven today as they posted 326-7 against Middlesex at Denby.

There were also half centuries for Alex Hughes and Alex Thomson, while an interesting trialist was George Hargrave, who has been so prolific for Shropshire and Oxford University in the past two years.

He made 72 and it is good to see Derbyshire offering an opportunity to an undoubtedly talented young player. It is down to him what he makes of it and of course if he wants a professional cricket career.

But that is an impressive effort and it may be one worth keeping an eye on, after his excellent half century against us in a friendly match a few weeks ago.

  1. I thought both Brooke and Leus looked in no trouble until they were dismissed. Harry not quite as assured but you can't knock a career best. Then Nuj comes in and does what he's been doing all season and gets us the third batting point. A good days cricket, Durham well behaved in the field unlike some others.

One for the stats nerds for the remainder of the season is the competition to get to 1000 runs, Shan Masood and Wayne Madsen are of course already there, but after today, Brooke Guest has 855 runs, Anuj Dal has 781 and Leus Du Plooy 734. All must be hoping that given fair weather they can get there with 5 possible innings remaining. To have 2 batters get to 1000 is not bad given our recent history, but is anyone able to say when we last had 5 players reach the milestone?

    2. Yeah it is a shame CB. Been a terrific servant but it just hasn't been there this year. I feel for him, top bloke, but a season average of 14 isn't good enough. He knows that. If we had two good openers, the batting line up is good

    3. Yes a top class overseas opener is essential for next year possibly as captain. 3-7 is really solid but we can’t have Watt at 8 starting the tail when he’s a 10 or 11. Would have scored 350 yesterday with a decent 8 and 9 helping Dal. Maybe Chappell will bolster the batting next season ?

  3. Do we reckon Anuj gets moved up a place next year? Feels like he’s not out a lot.

    1. Although I'm sure he's enjoying being in a stable position for once(!) I'd love to see him get moved up the order. I think he deserves the chance. I'm also surprises he doesn't seem to be in the conversation for the England Lions. Facet.

  4. An encouraging recovery v Durham. In 1962 six batsmen reached a thousand runs with Donald Carr on 923. That was a season of 28 matches but the conditions (and bowlers!) were often much more testing than today's.

  5. Totally agree, Steve, Harry Came has been coming along nicely in the last few weeks. It would be great to see him reach a century before the end of the season. And he might do it. I think it's madness to keep putting Billy out there as opener. For whatever reason, his confidence and technique has gone,

I can see Connors, Aitchison and Potts doing a lot of damage tomorrow.

  6. Looks like George Hargrave did well, amongst others, opening for the Seconds. Hope we can sign the youngster and find ourselves an talented opener to sadly replace BG. He may also be able to provide cover for any injury to Guest.

Peakfan: Hope your insider info can get us an early scoop!! ;)

  7. The decision to give Billy another year so early in the year looks like one of the few mistakes Mickey has made this year, Billy had a couple of good knocks in the 50 over cup but we would seem to be better off taking a punt on Harry Came
