Derbyshire v Lancashire day 3

Lancashire 161 and 226 (Harris 58, Moores 57 Aitchison 5-49, Haydon 3-71)

Derbyshire 364 and 25-1

Derbyshire won by nine wickets

Outside of family events, there is little better in life than to open the curtains in your hotel room, see the sun stream in and realise that you will soon be walking to the prettiest of cricket grounds. Even better, likely to witness a win for your team, which seemed on the cards today as I enjoyed a leisurely stroll to the ground on very quiet roads.

A couple more observations from this trip. Whatever the shortcomings on the pitch at times, this is an EXCEPTIONALLY well run club. From the signposting, ticketing, warm welcome and catering onwards, it reeks of professionalism.

So too with the players and their pre-match routine. It is structured, with plenty of different exercises and drills to warm up, as well as those to engender team spirit. It is high, so much is evident, with the laughter and enjoyment of what they do clearly evident. Diametrically opposed from that of the opposition here, where it was clear that all is not well in the Kingdom of Lancastria...

Bashir-watching was interesting over these three days. There are many players of renown whose reaction to omission from the playing eleven would not have been positive. Shoaib would have been a contender for Twelfth Man of the Year, were there such an award, going about his duties with a smile, a laugh, a hug for a team mate, a word and autograph for fans. You couldn't ask for more.

When the action started, Joe Moores reinforced the positive impression of his wicket keeping with three delightful square cuts and a sound defence. But for Lancashire to threaten a repeat of Old Trafford, Marcus Harris had to go big and he was removed after half an hour by the ubiquitous Aitchison, clean bowled. Soon afterwards Balderson was smartly held by Jewell at slip and 'Big Ben' had picked up another five-wicket haul.  Still, as a nickname it is better than 'Michelle'..

It is the third time in successive matches he has had five wickets in an innings. The last Derbyshire player to do that was Michael Holding in 1983. Pretty illustrious company to be in..

Moores and Coughlin held up Derbyshire with a lively ninth wicket stand before Dal, after being hit for six, then four, held one back and had the latter caught by Reece at mid off.

A big six over mid wicket by Moores ensured that Derbyshire would have to bat again and further fine strokes meant that Derbyshire needed 24 when he was eventually bowled by Montgomery. He looks quite a talent and deserved better support.

I have no idea why Harry Came played the shot he did in the Derbyshire run 'chase' of 24 in 163 overs: best filed under 'stupid and unnecessary' and redolent of the vibe of a beer match. But Reece and Montgomery took their side over the line to clinch an excellent nine-wicket win, all before lunch on the third day. It was their first win in red ball cricket against Lancashire since 1997 and the first over them at Queen's Park since 1961 (courtesy David Griffin).

This was a polished, professional display by Derbyshire. The frustration is that we know they have such cricket in them, as does Mickey Arthur. Perhaps if the players themselves fully l realised it, they can take the final step forward to consistency.

They are temporarily back to third in the table after this win. Had they won at Old Trafford and done better against Gloucestershire, promotion would have been more 'likely' than 'possible'. But if they can keep the momentum going when red ball cricket  resumes on August 20 (crazy, isn't it?) then who knows?

Between times, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they can have a good run in the Metro Bank One Day Cup. Having only lost Nye Donald to the 'other' competition, they really should make a decent fist of it this year.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who I spent time with over the past few days. It really was a pleasure and I travel back north tomorrow having seen two wins in two trips this summer, as well as not missing a single ball of cricket here.

Lucky mascot? I am a bit big for that, but the trip home is much easier as a consequence!

Catch you all soon.
One man and his blog...thanks to Andy for the photo!

  1. A great performance from start to finish. Winning in just over 2 days should give the team a lot of confidence moving forward. Is Ben Aitchison signed up long-term? If he continues in the form he is the likes of Notts, Yorkshire and Surrey will all be interested in taking him off our hands. Also, a word for young Haydon. He just keeps it simple with an excellent line and length. A real prospect I reckon. Grant from Telford

    1. Ben is signed up till the end of 2027 at this stage. But I suspect MA will be discussing a longer term deal now they know his back will handle the rigours of regular cricket.

  2. A very comprehensive team win . Hopefully that goes some way to resetting the morale after the Durham game . If we can still fit and focused we can be competitive in all formats but we need to win a close game to prove it to ourselves . Could easily be top 2 in both formats if pressure situations had been won .
Special mention to Ben Aitchison who is bowling beautifully atm .

    1. 40 wickets at 21, while Rory has 22 at 22. Two young bowlers doing a grand job!

  3. Ever so 'chuffed' that your trip down was so good Steve. You brought both the weather and the luck with you.

    Take care mate!

  4. A superb performance by Derbyshire. Why can't they play like this more often?

What a season Aitchison is having! To produce this kind of form after suffering the injuries he has had is testament to him and all his hard work he has put in to get his career back on track.

    I like the photo.

    1. He has worked hard to get back and deserves everything that goes his way. Verging on genuine all rounder status now, too...

    1. His control at one end was crucial. 23 overs for 36 runs.. they couldn't score at his end so had to try and do so from the others. Sometimes the contribution of a player isn't always seen in the scorebook...

  6. I think we can now halt the search for someone to lead the bowling attack over the next few seasons. Step forward Ben Aitchison. Martin

    1. I agree, Martin. How nice would an attack including Ben, Rory and Nick be? Maybe with Matt Stewart pushing. Working with Abbas and Chris Wright will continue to improve them. We have Chappell to come back too, of course!

  7. Are there 2 Derbyshires running in parallel universes?
Surely this can't be the same team that played Durham!
Perhaps the team that showed up at Chesterfield could continue for the rest of the season.

    1. Honestly, not too worried about losing to Durham, because they are a division one side. It was the defeat at Old Trafford and the poor display against Gloucs that I found most falling. We are better than that, as we showed here

  8. I noticed that David "Bumble" Lloyd was sitting nearby yesterday with his little dog. I didn't like to ask him what he thought of the Lancs performance!

    1. He was there all three days, with his wife and two wire haired fox terriers. I spoke to them for a good while on the first day, but more about dogs than cricket, as we have one of the same breed!

  9. Ben Aitchison’s performances this season have been brilliant.

It’s often the case that when a player is injured for more than a year he either never makes it back or doesn't reach his former level of performance.

I expected Ben to be released at the end of last season. So credit must go to MA for sticking with him, and to Ben himself for fighting his way back and surpassing everyone's expectations.

Thanks for your reports over the past few days. I have to confess I’d never heard the word ‘bucolic’ before, so learning that was a bonus. Dre

  10. Always mixed.feelings, after the end of the 4 day game.at.Chesterfield. I think it signifies the start of the second half of summer, shorter days and another 12 month wait for this fixture. Having said that, we played very well and it is a game that will long in the memory. Kris

    1. Agreed there, Kris. And yes, I share that sentiment, especially with SO long until the next red ball fixture. But maybe the one day cup could be good this year - fingers crossed!

  12. Thoroughly enjoyed an emphatic victory. Good toss to win, but our seam attack rammed home that advantage and there was no let up from the moment Jennings went early.

I thought the innings from MM was magnificent, been slightly overlooked with our bowlers taking much of the credit, and rightly so, but that innings of 86 in testing conditions had a massive impact on the game.

I didn't see you Steve, but glad that Derbyshire CCC put on the best version of themselves for you, in perfect weather and surroundings!

  13. I've enjoyed reading your summaries as always Steve and especially when we win! How sad that Queen's Park gets only one Championship match and one T20 fixture per season. Surely a Metrobank Cup game could be added to the schedule there? My other gripe - already mentioned above - is that we now have to wait till August till our next Championship game. What a complete mess the cricket season fixture list is!

    1. It would certainly benefit from at least one more fixture and a 50 over game would be ideal

    1. I understand that it is under consideration. The likelihood increases after we won against Lancashire. As always it will depend on the budget but also if the right type and quality of player is available

With both divisions in the championship looking so close and exciting this season it’s such a shame there is now a huge gap between matches. It’s such a anti climax and having 4 games in September is awful. It lets rain and bad light have to bigger say in the outcome. The championship is still on the whole quite well attended and has so many great games with lots of twists and turns that other forms of the game don’t have. I know it’s difficult but ie deserves far better treatment. Plus especially batting wise it’s the only form of the game which will make the test team any better

    1. I agree. Ian. It's still my favourite form of the game and to basically bookend the season with the best form - which as you say ties into the Test side - is a classic case of shooting oneself in the foot. It is another example of the ECB being unfit for purpose, when they cannot properly organise the domestic season, then expect the national side to be all conquering as a consequence of their ineptitude...
