Yorkshire 151-9 (Bess 53, Aitchison 5-29, Ghazanfar 2-5)
Derbyshire 157-2 (Donald 54, Madsen 51*, Jewell 41*)
Derbyshire won by 8 wickets
Yet it was a case of our spinner being better than their three, as Mohammad Ghazanfar returned the most economical T20 spell by a Derbyshire bowler, with figures of 4-2-5-2. None of the Yorkshire batters had a clue what he was doing with the ball and it was mesmerising to watch.
Yet he was (almost?) overshadowed by Ben Aitchison, who returned the second best T20 figures by a Derbyshire bowler, in taking 5-29 (stats from David Griffin). Dom Bess made a battling fifty, but no one else suggested permanence, even though not all of the possible catches were held. Special mention should go to Caleb Jewell, who held a flying one at gulley, ensuring that both the heroes of the Yorkshire win at Old Trafford on Friday, Bairstow and Wharton, were back in the pavilion early.
Ghazanfar will very quickly become an extremely wealthy young man, on the basis of his stint with the county. I think he has got better as the tournament has progressed and although he will get worked out, at some point, his fast arm action suggests that might be some distant time in the future.
As for Aitchison, he showed the benefits of putting the ball in the right place, which is what he does most of the time. He will get better at this format the more that he plays it, but he showed once again how much this team has missed him in his two years of injury.
It might still have been a tricky chase, but once again Nye Donald led off with a half century, his sixth of the summer in this competition. If he can carry this form into the 'other' competition, he has a shop window to make himself in demand anywhere in the world. Few people are given the gift of timing that he has and in current form he is a magnificent spectacle.
Caleb Jewell lent sensible, professional support at the other end and when Donald and Came went in quick succession, he was happy to take a backseat to a Wayne Madsen masterclass. Circumspect at first, Wayne took Yorkshire apart at the end as the boundaries flowed from his bat to all corners of the ground. He remains a special cricketer.
I didn't listen to much of the commentary, but when the equation had reached something akin to 20 from 30 balls and Wayne was in full flight, the commentator said 'If Yorkshire aren't careful, this game will be running away from them..' Inadvertent comedy gold..
A double completed over our old rivals. While a win at Chesterfield is an annual event, to do so at Headingley is especially gratifying.
In closing, one observation on the stream. Do they really need to pan across the crowd after almost every ball? There's only so many times that it is of even moderate interest, although it was good to see the Derbyshire players signing autographs for the youngsters as the game went on.
One more to go.
Do you think Donald has a chance of an England call up at some
ReplyDeleteStage Peakfan?
Short answer is no.
DeleteIf he does well in the hundred and continues this form next season he must have a T20 England chance ? If Salt can get in there’s hope for anyone
DeletePaul
I think England is a closed shop. Hence Crawley being persisted with. And if they look for someone new, they will likely go younger. But there are few who strike so cleanly, when in form
DeleteThe commentator spent the whole game saying Yorkshire need to win to keep their chances of the QF alive which I could hilariously optimistic…
ReplyDeleteDonald and Ghazanfar (not in the field) have been joy to watch this campaign, and Madsen after a slow start has been his reliable self. Not enough joy coming from other quarters bit I too hope Aitchison can develop into a good option in this format.
Loved seeing our lads signings for the kids, its highlight for my daughter when we go, and Lancashire’s Chris Green is the only opposing player she managed to get this season as most scurry past as quick as they can…
I don't understand that.. a former Derbyshire player once told me he never refused an autograph, because he knew there would come a time when people stopped asking...
DeleteSuperb day out. Some brave Derbyshire Fans on the Western Terrace chanting "can we play you every week" always a bit dangerous in Yorkshire. Superb performances from Ghazanfar, Donald, Madsen and Aitchison with decent backing from Jewell.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if Ghazanfars figures are a record in the competion for any bowler in its history or just for Derbyshire but it even earned a clap from the hard to please Headingly crowd. Was sat behind the 3 club photographers who all packed up before the end of Derbyshires powerplay.
Most enjoyable day of the season so far even better than Chesterfield and great to see 5 performers rather than one or occasionally two. Think i will have to go on Thursday in case it iS the last ever Derbyshire T20 appearance from our best ever player in the format
It was the most economical for Derbyshire, John, beating Charl Langeveldt who bowled four overs, four for nine, also against Yorkshire.
DeleteThe victory came in exactly 100 balls. A little practice session for those going elsewhere next month!

DeleteCan we play you every week, can we play you every week. Wow, didn't see another hammering of the Yorkies coming, I honestly thought it would be the other way round. That's our best performance in the T20 by a long shot, all departments worked to a tee and Ghazanfar and Aitchison take a bow, top bowling 2-5 in four overs is ridiculous stuff, what a bowler Ghaza could become. The batting equally as professional with Aneurin playing another fine innings and captain fantastic back in the groove to steer us home. Derbyshire, why haven't we seen more of these displays?
ReplyDeleteWhat a bizarre comp we've had. ZERO wins at Derby is terrible, yet we have 3 of the highest run getters in the comp, in Donald, Madsen and Jewell. Donald has the most sixes and the best strike rate. He really is a joy to watch. Sadly, the bowling has generally not been....Kris.
ReplyDeleteI wondered if we might have pre-used pitches at Derby, to support our bowling strength in spin. You could then have had Thomson or Wagstaff as 5th bowler. But we didn't, which I felt an opportunity missed..
DeleteWhat a player Wayne Madsen still is
ReplyDeleteRemarkable, Simon. I don't even see next season as his last. He is still fit, the eyes are obviously keen and for me he still has another 2 or 3 years in him
DeleteThat was fabulous to watch! Beautiful weather, a decent crowd in and don't think I've ever seen us coast to victory quite like that. The set up for Wayne to finish with a 6 was sublime, or ridiculous with a hint of arrogance
ReplyDeleteHow frustrating is this club?
Thanks to all involved today - quite the afternoon out
Andy
We coasted just the same 7 days before. Unfortunately we can only play them twice!
DeleteWhat a strange T20 Campaign we have 3 players right up there
ReplyDeleteAD Top of all players in the competition in 3 separate categories most 50s most 6s and highest scoring rate as well as being 3rd for most runs and 4th for most 4s
WM 6th In most runs and most 4s top 7
AG 2nd most economical bowler at 7.08 per over
Our top 3 players badly let down and PB right up there as worst economy rate with GC not far behind and BA well in worst 20%
Our season in a nutshell
I’ve not been able to get to as many Blast games as I’d have liked but I have been to all the victories - Trent Bridge, Edgbaston (v Leics) and the two Yorkshire matches. We really aren’t all that far off being a quality T20 team and it’s so frustrating! If only we’d got a really good ‘closure’ bowler. Today at Headingley my kind went back to Jade Dernbach. That kind of bowler. If we could get someone like that we’d be cooking. Brown was meant to be it but it ain’t working at the moment sadly. That said, what a performance - four top individual performances today and let’s hope we can keep Warwickshire out of the quarters on Friday!
ReplyDeleteAndy T Cleckheaton
Dernbach, Langeveldt, Ferguson, Zaman..all very good death bowlers. Best I have seen this year is de Lange at Gloucestershire.
DeleteFantastic performance. If only this Derbyshire team has turned up in every T20 game.
ReplyDeleteWould it be 'our' Derbyshire, then? 🤣
DeleteWe've won 4 out of the last 8. If we'd have only won 2 out of the first 5, we'd have had a chance. Poor starts in this comp are killing us and this season we looked undercooked. Kris
ReplyDeleteWe are always slow starters. Maybe if we had won that close finish at the start v Northants, or batted like we have recently at Leicester. Different tournament, then
DeleteBest allround performance of the campaign.A death bowler is essential for next season because those last few overs when teams have got away have cost us a place in quarters.Topspinner
ReplyDeleteI think if we can pick up a good domestic bat over the winter, we need two overseas bowlers, one at least being able to bat.
DeleteSome have pointed out the poor figures of our pacemen. Could it be that opponents have looked to see off Ghazza & go harder at the other bowlers? Just a thought that occurred whilst walking the dog
ReplyDeleteMarkB
That will always happen though, Mark. Opponents will always target the perceived weaker link in an attack. I think Aitchison could be a good bowler in the format, but needs to work on his skills. He has played very little T20 and there are different skill sets
DeleteHas anyone seen the quite odd and a little insulting comment from the non spinning spin bowler dom Bess asking if his team are committed enough to perform every match especially a Sunday in Derby. It’s not even like Yorkshire are even a decent side themselves ( in any format)
ReplyDeleteThey've not played us on a Sunday in Derby for quite some time, so who knows 🤷. His head must still be frazzled after the two beatings we have given them. Stay classy, Dom!
DeleteAnother excellent performance from Derbyshire albeit against a poor Yorkshire outfit. I for one didn’t expect us to achieve the double over them but they have fared no better in this competition than us.
ReplyDeleteAmazing bowling figures from Ghazanfar and Aitchison that gave us a great chance of winning provided a couple of batsmen came off. Unsurprisingly Nye Donald enjoyed himself against Yorkshire’s attack and Jewell provided ample support. Just left time for the maestro to finish things off with another masterclass in finding the gaps in the field.
The two games against Yorkshire certainly lift your spirits after a disappointing campaign. Just hope that we can take this winning mentality into the red ball competition.
