I'll be honest, when we signed Mohammad Ghazanfar to go with Samit Patel, I thought we would play to our obvious strengths and use more worn pitches. We haven't and it has probably been to the detriment of results.
I had an interesting email from Robert today, who said that Derbyshire have not replaced Mattie McKiernan or Alex Hughes in this format and he is right. While Mattie will be remembered for being hammered around Taunton by Rilee Rossouw and around Derby by Mitchell Santner, he was a canny bowler who only went for 8.1 an over during his career in T20 while contributing useful runs and fielding brilliantly. Alex did the same and only went for 8.4... we would have taken that from a fifth bowler this summer.
I think Martin Andersson could fill that role in the future, if he has a skipper with greater faith in him. For me, that should be Nye Donald next year.
There is no suggestion that Derbyshire will offer opportunity to younger players, as Mickey Arthur suggested, so I suspect we will go with the side that played at Headingley last weekend, against Birmingham Bears tomorrow.
So that will be:
Jewell, Donald, Came, Madsen, Whiteley, Andersson, Patel, Chappell, Aitchison, Ghazanfar, Brown
Thomson, Morley, Wagstaff, Guest also in squad
Birmingham will need to win this game, because if they don't and Leicestershire beat Yorkshire, they may not qualify for the knockout stage.
Their squad:
Davies, Hassan Ali, Barnard, Bethell, Briggs, Garton, Gleeesob, Hain, Latham, Lintott, Miles, Mosley, Smith, Yates
After the hammering at Edgbaston, it is hard to see a Derbyshire win here, but it would be good if, at the end of a disappointing tournament for us, we at least produced a performance to make the loyal home support proud.
What do you think?
Nye Donald's fireworks aside it's been an immensely disappointing campaign in the t20. One or two others like Madsen did well and Ghazanfar looks a prospect too.
ReplyDeleteThankfully we can at least take something forward and say that our own talented youngsters got a chance to show what they can do with *checks notes* Nick Potts getting one over and nobody else getting a game
For shame. Expect to see more of Patel and Whiteley than Wagstaff or Hawkins in the One Day Cup as well.
I was quite surprised when we ley McKiernan go, but I guess they saw Wagstaff as the leg spin option. After some opportunities last season he seems to be nowhere near getting a game now.
ReplyDeleteAndersson’s been very underused in both formats as a bowler. Even going at 9 an over in the blast is better than any of our other seam bowlers.
McKiernen decided to retire. Be nice to get back to the 4 day game. I would consider playing Donald v Leicestershire. Grant from Telford
DeleteHe did, Grant, but he has been missed in this format, as has Alex Hughes. In all aspects of the game
DeleteI was responding to the previous comment about us letting him go. Yes, we do miss both of them. Grant from Telford
DeleteRight Grant, I understand now!
ReplyDeleteThe irony is that the decision to sign and appoint Patel as captain for the white ball stuff would have had more value had we fielded more of the kids (especially after it was obvious we weren’t qualifying for the knock-outs) for them to observe and learn off a player with vast experience in the heat of battle….as it is he’s just about been worth a place in a patchy T20 side, and has been an underwhelming captain anyway.
ReplyDeleteIv never seen such a non performance. Everything was poor. The way the Bears casually thrashed the ball constantly over the ropes. The poor body language. Batting local league at best. I came out at 4 down. Total embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteI said the same things exactly. Mostly this season I have found positives in most performances, but not last night. It was desperately poor and not a good look for the paying public who support this club through thick and thin. I was surprised so many stayed to the bitter end to be honest. Ian from Heanor.
