Second team in action at Repton

Interesting looking second team in the game against Lancashire, starting at Repton today..

Ben Aitchison returns to action and Pat Brown is also in the side, as is Nick Potts. Former Lancashire wicket-keeper/bat George Lavelle lines up against his former team mates, in a side captained by Alex Thomson and featuring several academy players.

The Derbyshire side:
  • Wagstaff, Tarrant, bin Naeem, Thomson, Lavelle, Hawkins, Potts, Aitchison, Brown, Rogers, Green
More on this, later.

  1. Great to see Aitchison back playing cricket.

I called Lavelle as one worth a look so hopefully he takes his chance. A bit more batting and keeping depth never hurts if he's got it in him to be anywhere near as good as Guest whose path he follows in.

    1. Lancs fan here.

Lavelle is one of the best keepers of his age, it's just that unfortunately he's struggled with the bat in first class cricket. I think the fact that Lancs have one of the worst coaching teams in county cricket did not help (you might want to wait a season if you want a keeper, mind, as I think poor George Bell is going to be the next sacrificial lamb to our coaches refusal to accept fault). He's a better keeper than Guest (and I thought Guest was a more than capable gloveman when at Lancs) and Guest hardly pulled up any batting trees when at Lancs, so you never know.

    2. Thank you Lancs fan. I have seen more of Bell than Lavelle but been impressed by him. Thing is, for a club that carries by necessity a small staff, can we afford 3 keepers, with Guest a fixture and Donald as back up?

If so, I would take Bell. If not...Guest could play as a specialist bat, but maybe our greater need is a better bat than Bell (or Lavelle)? We need to find an eventual replacement for Wayne in due course..maybe 5 years time?!

When did Lavelle join Derbyshire Steve?

    1. He is on trial, as he was at Gloucestershire in their last match. But with Guest and Donald already, he would need to do very well to get a deal, both with bat and gloves

  3. The challenge is not to see if Bell has more natural talent than Donald - unlikely, but whether he has better batting discipline, shot selection and playing the pitch and match circumstances- quite possibly…
