Harry Moore has been ruled out for at least the next 8 weeks with a back injury, which is a blow for the young man, as well as the county. His height - and long back as a consequence - will always present challenges, of course and it is further evidence that he will need to be well managed, moving forward.
But Blair Tickner has arrived and pronounced himself fully fit after a bicep injury and a very successful winter in New Zealand. So he goes straight into the Derbyshire squad for the game against Leicestershire tomorrow. Mitch Wagstaff is also in the squad, with Nye Donald continuing to be assessed after the shoulder injury sustained in the field against Gloucestershire.
The Derbyshire squad of 13 - my likely eleven first:
Lloyd, Jewell, Came, Madsen, Guest, Reece, Dal, Andersson, Chappell, Tickner, Morley (Brown and Wagstaff)
There is no news on the Leicestershire squad as I write, with Rishi Patel a potential doubt after injury in their ten wicket win over Glamorgan last weekend. He would be a big loss, but Logan van Beek has arrived to take his place as their second overseas player alongside Peter Handscomb and the squad is likely to be broadly the same as in that opening win:
Patel, Budinger, Holland, Hill, Handscomb, Ahmed, Cox, Green, Mike, Scriven, Wright, van Beek
The game is set to be blessed by good weather throughout and after such a dry start to the season the spinners may come into play as the game progresses. Whether that opens the door for Mitch Wagstaff's leg spin is a moot point, but Mickey Arthur will be loathe to change a winning side, especially with two good spin options already available in David Lloyd and Jack Morley.
Early days, but a top of the table local derby has a nice sound to it! The arrival of Tickner might just give Derbyshire the edge and I am going for a follow up success to the excellent win last week.
What do you think?
Update: Both Rishi Patel (dislocated thumb) and Chris Wright (knee) miss the game for the home side who have the following thirteen:
Ahmed, Budinger, Cox, B Green, Handscomb, Hill, Holland, Kimber, Mike, Patel, Scriven, Trevaskis, van Beek, Walker.
Wagstaff and Brown to miss out I reckon. Come on Derbyshire, big game this
ReplyDeleteI would like to see Tickner for Brown and bat with bit more depth Wagstaff. As last year him and Lloyd picked up 5 wicket’s between them.
ReplyDeleteIt’s good to see both teams stronger in 2025. I looked at the Leicestershire team and I’m very impressed with depth. I think be very hard match and will be interesting see what type wicket will be knowing good chance 4 days play.
I fancy Derbyshire for another victory especially if we win the toss. I hope Morley keeps his place in the side. He’s a great bowler to watch and is still exceptionally young for a spin bowler and given plenty of bowling could turn out to be a brilliant red ball player in the years to come
ReplyDeleteI think Tickner should replace Brown and Wagstaffe should replace Andersson. Disturbing news about Harry Moore. I hope his career won't be blighted by injury.
ReplyDeleteTickner for Brown please.
ReplyDeleteAfter such a resounding win against Gloucestershire, it's proof of the pudding time now. Can we reproduce that kind of form against a Leicestershire team that looks far better than Gloucestershire? My heart says yes; my head isn't sure.
ReplyDeleteHope Moore comes through ok , England already have a long list of quick’s that don’t play much cricket Wood , Archer , Stone , !!
ReplyDeleteI’d rest Brown and leave out Wagstafffe , let’s hope we can build on the solid start made .
I agree, Paul. Brown is so important to T20 plans and while improving as a red ball bowler, misses out here.
DeleteIt why I haven't gone overboard about Harry, because there is so much for any sports star to get through before 'very promising' becomes 'bona code star'.
He can do it but it will need a lot of hard work...
Is he improving though? I'm not so sure, but hopefully you are right.
DeleteIt's a slight concern for me that we have Donald, Brown, Whiteley and Patel who are, in my opinion, white ball only players. I'm assuming that Samit has a contract to reflect this, but in the past MA has stated he is available, as required, for red ball. I don't think Samit has much/any interest in doing so.
I'd suggest that "carrying" four players who are mainly, or solely, playing only white ball cricket, would be too many.
He has only played 15 red ball matches in 8 years, so has a lot of catching up to do.
DeleteYou are right though, and I suspect that number will be halved by the end of the summer. Unless Patel and Whiteley offer more in the T20 than last year, of course, which we all hope for!
**bona fide...predictive text not spotted!
ReplyDeleteFor me Tickner is in for Brown. Also do we need five seamers? Wagstaff for Andersson could be an option to give a younger player more experience and add variety to the attack.
