Middlesex v Derbyshire day 1

Middlesex 307-4 (Eskinazi 118, De Caires 80, Lakmal 2-77)

v Derbyshire

On what turned out to be a very good batting track all day, I can only assume that, on winning the toss we thought any help would be early.

As it turned out there was little lateral movement and the home side progressed serenely all day. The cause wasn't helped by Ryan Sidebottom seemingly doing a hamstring seven balls in, which left four bowlers to do the bulk of the bowling all day.

They stuck well to their task, supported well in the field where the ground fielding was excellent. Lakmal and Conners will bowl better but stuck at it, while Dal can seldom have bowled as many overs. Add in his fielding at point and he put in a good shift today.

Again I thought Thomson excellent and bowling with good rhythm, fully deserving his late wicket with the assistance of a good catch from Conners. He was unlucky with a pre-lunch lbw shout too, when it was hard to see what the ball was missing.

Eskinasi made a fine century, while De Caires, son of Mike Atherton, made his first half century in Middlesex colours. Both looked very organised players and the home side will be very happy tonight.

Not the all - conquering start we hoped for, then, but we fought hard to the end. There appear no demons in the wicket and while bowling Middlesex out with four bowlers seems unlikely, we should make a decent fist of batting on this surface.

In closing, commiserations to Ryan Sidebottom, whose loan spell is almost certainly over at the end of this match. Mickey Arthur will likely be on the phone again to look at options.

We go again tomorrow

  1. Hard work today, particularly after the unfortunate injury but the bowlers just dug in. It's the first time I've watched via a stream off and on all day and thought it really good.
Fingers crossed for a better day tomorrow. Can't fault the effort today at all.

  2. Agree with everything you say and can add one of your usual day one comments until both teams have batted we will be able to judge better.

I though we missed the bowling of Luis Reece today mainly for the variety of a different line to try and break the partnership. Hopefully Mikey Cohen may add this once fully fit.

    1. Definitely, David. Cohen's angle and pace is very useful

We won't see the best of Lakmal and Conners until they can be strike bowlers. Today they had to be strike and stock bowlers, never easy.

But overall, we battled well today and a good first session tomorrow could get us back into the game. Then we hopefully bat and bat...

  3. I honestly think we've run over several black cats before the season has started. Unbelievable that Sidebottom is now injured one over in to his debut, probably has done very little training and was thrown in at the deep end, no way could he have been ready to play.
Going to be a real long slog now the rest of this game, and our batsmen have to be sensible and play for the draw

    1. He was involved in their pre season games and will have done the fitness work of the rest of the squad. We didn't pull him off a beach!

Theese things happen and especially on very cold days. But yes, need to bat long and see where it goes. A last afternoon run chase would be fun, but let's not get ahead of ourselves!

  4. What a load of turgid rubbish. Those hysterical voices screaming for the head of Houghton have now got their and the reducing counties department of the ecb wish.

Chasing 500 before tea against a very average Middlesex team will be way beyond us.

We will loose by an innings but its OK the king has arrived and we were a bowler down.

All I've ever wanted was for us to be competitive. Well we are miles away from that.

We are not playing anywhere near like a first class county and very soon we will not be one.

Before I'm accused of overreacting. Arthur has had 2 months and can not get any more out of them than Houghton did.

It's was obvious we needed a change of captain
It was also obvious the squad needed an overhaul

Neither of these things happened. Despite making a profit of 1.5 million.

All that did happen was Arthur recruiting one of his mates who on yesterday's showing looks unfit disinterested and here for one last pay day.

    1. Blimey Rob, that's a massive overreaction..

First game of the season, you said it. The squad needs an overhaul but most were contracted, so as I have said all along, next year is when we judge MA properly.

I assume you mean Lakmal, who took 2 of the wickets and hasn't bowled for a couple of weeks. I thought he looked fit as a butchers dog, tbh.

But surprised mate, MA is a highly regarded coach, not Harry Potter. Two months in a role is nothing and we have seen one days cricket...

    2. Crikey. Rob, to quote your first sentence, that is a load of rubbish.

As a kneejerk reaction following 1 day of cricket on a pretty flat track plus losing one bowler to injury so early you have taken the biscuit here. Far too early to be walking the banks of the canal.

2 months is literally nothing for Arthur to have made significant changes, Houghton was criminally allowed to extend contracts last year which gives him less wriggle room to bring in new blood. You are overreacting (as I suspect you know you are from your comments)

Change of captain is probably required but who would you give it to? Been through the squad in my head numerous times and can't find a candidate. Madsen didn't do well before and need to look to the future, Reece could do it but has enough on his shoulders. Wouldn't give it to a new overseas player so that leaves du Plooy.

Give MA a chance, Rome wasn't built in a day. Also, take a look at the scores/results of Eddie Barlow's first season. Much worse than my rose tinted glasses would have me believe.

Chin up Rob. I hope you don't support the Rams too, as you will be needing counselling soon.

    3. I would rather judge the team after a few weeks rather than after 1 day. I do not think anyone is expecting an overnight transformation into a team of world beaters.

    4. Crikey Rob! Steady on a bit. I share your disappointment with how it went yesterday but let's at least see how this game progresses. I do agree that DH was criticised unfairly and needlessly in many respects, but we have moved on and could hardly have got anyone better than MA. We probably need to give him a bit longer than 1 day into his first season!!

Also, to be accurate I think we announced a profit of £1.15 million rather than £1.5 million.

  5. It was a frustrating day, certainly. I hope the overload on the bowlers doesn't result in more injuries. It does seem as though there is some money in the bank, for once, for team stregthening - my guess is that Mickey wants to take a good look at his resources before he commits to further spending and that is sensible. If we do get rolled over by an innings in this game I don't think we will see an immediate reaction - the performance against Sussex in the second game will give an early indication of Mickey's motivational powers. On the other hand, a good batting performance in the current game will give us all confidence.
This transition will take time. I think all we can ask this season is for consistent competitiveness, and then a further investment in playing resources as required. Days like yesterday will happen, and after last season's debacle will make us think the worst, but let's trust the process - and Mickey Arthur.

  6. Morning all. Rob - that's a bit heavy mate. MA can't just clear it out, spend mega money and change it at the stroke of a pen.

Day 1 of the new season and you're writing everything off. Lakmal - first game. Shan not even padded up yet.

It may be a rebuilding job, but it will take time - and probably well into next season.

  7. I see Matt Critchley has scored 132 for Essex with 13 fours and two sixes. What we've lost..........
