Yorkshire V Derbyshire RLODC

Yorkshire 308-2 (Kohler Cadmore 79, Lyth 78, Willey 72* Brook 59*)

Derbyshire 223-3 (Godleman 107*, du Plooy 75)

Match tied

That was simply stunning.

Regardless of not managing two runs from the final delivery of the game, Derbyshire can be very proud of a thrilling run chase, one that earned them a share  of the points.

Few people gave us a chance of chasing down a target of 225 runs in 22 overs. Yet before the start of the innings, I posted on Twitter that we had five times exceeded 200 in T20 matches and it was possible 'if someone went berserk'.

Well, two people did. Billy Godleman smashed a third successive century with an unbeaten 107 from 62 balls, while Leus du Plooy hit a quite stunning 75 from just 37 deliveries.

It is already patently clear that the South African is a massive talent, some of his stroke play simply breathtaking. He seems to have so much time, the hallmark of a very good player. A six over extra cover was special, but a flip almost from the base of leg stump for six over fine leg was a shot that few could undertake.

After the early loss of Reece and Madsen, prospects were not good. Yet the two left handers kept the score ticking over on target with one of the best common sense run chases I have seen from a  Derbyshire side. Each over brought an early boundary, then they worked it around without taking further undue risks. They hit eleven sixes between them, in a stand that added 135 runs in just twelve overs.

The dismissal of du Plooy brought in Matt Critchley, who kept the score ticking over, without timing the ball as we know he can. At the other end his captain breezed to another century and somehow managed to scramble and bludgeon eighteen from the final over, bowled by David Willey.

It was outstanding from Godleman, who set the tone, reaching and clearing the boundary in an innings somewhat out of character, but all the better for that. He led by example and was again a stand out.

The first Derbyshire player to make three successive List A centuries. He can be proud of that, for sure.

There will be mixed feelings among Derbyshire supporters, of course. We got it down to three runs from two balls, but you have to give credit to the bowler, who came back well when it mattered, having just been hammered for four, then six. Eighteen off the last over was a tall order, thanks to an excellent penultimate one from the Yorkshire skipper.

Earlier, the Derbyshire bowlers were hit around the park and had the rain not intervened, we may well have been chasing 400. Home supporters will feel that gave them a better chance of winning, but we were left to chase over ten runs an over, which is a tall order in any level of the game.

And we nearly, so nearly did it

Whether you regard that as a point lost or one gained is down to your outlook. I see this point as huge for the county and if it can be reinforced by a win at Durham on Sunday, we are very much in the shake up for the next stage.

The bowling looks a little short, but Dave Houghton is certainly getting the best from his batsmen

Who would have considered this position before the tournament began?

What a game that was.

  1. So Peakfan, the last Derbyshire batsman to score triple consecutive centuries in the one day game ,before Billy is?. Any stattos out there, I would be intrigued to know the answer. He really is in red hot form in this competition, amazing stuff.

  5. Whatever happens for the rest of the season in the last week Derbyshire have gone from a side that used to find a way to lose to a team that does not know when its beat

I will leave the technical side and player analysis to others but that right there is a reason to celebrate and will one day in some format result in us lifting silverware once more

  6. I will Peakfan I will. I was a little dissapointed against Notts more with the side we were forced to play as opposed to anything we did. As a result I nearly managed to drag what is an excellent blog down to the gutter for which I heartily apologise.
falling on ones sword over. Wow just wow. Following via BBC sport notifications. I thought I had turned them off during the White rose innings only to find I hadnt during the first 2 overs of ours! To come back after being 10 for 2 is quite simply astonishing and surely even the most ardent glass half empty fan will feel proud tonight. Im no stats man but how many times as any player scored 3 centuries in a row? Did he do it last year? In any case a fantastic effort and unfortunately for my long suffering wife I am talking all about Cricket this weekend as much as last! I concur that we are at least 1 bowler short but my word that side has some heart and du plooy appears a marvellous player. Long may it continue. Up the Shire. Rob in Essex

  7. A cynical Derbyshire supporter might be thinking that if Leus De Plooy turns out to be the find of the season are Derbyshire going to be able to hang on to him for very long?

  8. No time for cynicism. Worry about tomorrow when it happens. I suspect that a contract extension will not be long coming for that very talented young man.

It will be quite special watching him however long it is for!

  10. All I can say about our batting performance is: simply brilliant! I thought we were dead and buried at 10-2...but...This squad has fire in its belly and a belief that they can win. And to BIlly: I salute you;snd Luis: you can bat!

Notts will already be making plans to sign Leeus, especially after Hales’ latest, ahem, ‘transgression’.

  12. A brilliant run-chase, and the innings of Godleman and du Plooy must be two of the best one-day performances of any Derbyshire batsmen. Overall, a fair result to an extraordinary game.

  13. I watched the last 3 overs on the stream. Wow. Amazing performance to tie the game incredible batting. Slightly annoying that with 3 balls to go Billy played at a wide ball and got a single. Had he left it and the extra ball we would no doubt have won. I know I am a perfectionist. When the rain came I had decided the point would be perfect when I saw the stiff target set and then my phone bleeped with two early wickets I had given up. Lesson is never give up. Well done lads.

  14. I'm ashamed to say that at 15.00 I was influenced by local opinion that the weather would not allow any more play so I decided to beat the Friday pm traffic and venture home. At that point I was reflecting on some poor bowling perhaps with the exception of Rampaul and maybe Critchley although he always dealt a full toss or a long hop per over. Conners came back well with his second spell and I couldn't understand why Godleman then took him off. Incidentally Conners catch at fine leg was a really good one.
Only at 18.00 did I check on the other scores and realised that Derbyshire were batting; so disappointed that they didn't manage the win but outstanding batting by Godleman , Du Plooy and Critchley nonetheless. Hope this closes the Godleman batting debate.

  15. Fantastic effort. Believe it, folks, we have a dangerous, competetive side on our hands at last. And if they get the bums-on-seats thay deserve we shouldnt need to worry about affordiwg to keep the likes of Leus du Plooy who is worth the entrance money alone imho.

Brilliant stuff, guys. And especially Billy G.
