Middlesex v Derbyshire day 4

I didn't see any of today's play, travelling to our our holiday, but I was delighted to arrive and find we were within sight of victory.

I am delighted for Nick Potts, who had a good game here and can be proud of his efforts with bat and ball. The same goes for Wayne Madsen and it looks like Matthew Montgomery battled hard to get us across the line this afternoon.

With only fourteen points separating second place from seventh, Derbyshire are very much in the mix for promotion, as we break from the red ball game to move seamlessly into white ball cricket.

When two of the seam bowlers in the side have played just fourteen red ball games between them, a win at Lord's was a terrific effort. Six bowlers missing and they still managed to take twenty wickets. Not bad...

The challenge now will be recruiting someone for the run in. After his success against Bangladesh, Mohammad Abbas is surely going to be selected for the Pakistan tour of England, so an alternative will be needed, especially if the injury crisis among the domestic players does not ease.

Hopefully we will hear something about that in the coming weeks.

Now to turn our attention to the white ball game and hope for a good start after the positivity that has surrounded our last two matches.

More from me as the week progresses.

Well well well, dare we begin to mention the 'p' word or am I getting a tad carried away?. This Derbyshire side has suddenly clicked in to gear and we're playing some very good aggressive Cricket. Steve might be able to answer the question of when was the last time we won back to back Championship games, it certainly hasn't happened very often over these last few years. Great win that Derbyshire, onwards and upwards!

  2. Victory by 7 wickets. An excellent result, thoroughly deserved. Very fitting that Wayne should score the winning runs after his first innings century and almost certainly his last appearance at Lord's. And Ben Aitchinson won't forget this game in a hurry. A 5 - for followed by a century when his previous highest first class score was a 50 and his batting average just14. And now for the T20 campaign!

  4. Another excellent performance from Derbyshire. While Aitchison and Madsen made perhaps the most significant contributions, it was pleasing to see Potts do well. I know you cannot put everything on one game, but if Nick had performed poorly, it would be easy to see the possibility: this may have been his last game for the club. But he did well, so let’s hope his progress continues.

  5. Emphatic win today building up even more confidence for the team. The run “ chase” was never in doubt apart from weather concerns , and the lessons of the 4th innings debacle at Lancs seem to have been learned. Onwards and upwards now I hope.

  7. Another disciplined performance that shows what we can do when we knuckle down. I was pleased to see Potts pick up wickets today. We're now third in the table. Confidence should be high in the dressing room for the T20 against Durham on Friday.

    Hi Peakfan

I’ve been at Lords for the past few days and a great victory for the team at the Home of Cricket!

All the team made contributions. Obviously a big shout out to Ben A, what a superb all round performance. Well done to Potts too and of course another fine century from Wayne.

It was great to watch the team celebrate on the balcony and then in the Long Room afterwards. They have a great team spirit, well done to Mickey and Wayne.

The Lords Pavilion is one of the few places I ever wear a tie but I might wear it for the rest of the Derbyshire matches this season!!

  11. What a strange season this is turning out to be. Only a couple of games ago, the club appeared to be heading for the wooden spoon, but this has been followed by two excellent team performances.

After Wayne Madsen got injured playing for Italy, it appeared the best we could hope for was for him to return later in the season. And yet, here he is, back playing and averaging a mighty 58 runs per innings.

And then there is Mohammad Abbas, whom I still keep calling Zaheer. I couldn’t believe it when we signed him, and anticipated him ripping through the opposition with Luis Reece at the other end. Unfortunately, six games have gone by with both of them, for different reasons, making little impact with their bowling. From looking at Pakistan’s fixtures, it appears that Abbas is unlikely to play more than another two championship games (some things never change).

A couple of years ago, I was surprised when Aitchison was retained. Not many players come back from two years out of the game. But again, unexpectedly, his bowling has been a joy to watch. Coupled with Haydon’s bowling at the other end: Is it possible a combination has been found to rival Cork and Dean? Probably not, but in relation to what we have often seen in recent seasons, this is about as promising as it gets.

  12. What an excellent performance with every player making a contribution. A little concerned when we were 130 for 5 but Ben Aitchison and Wayne Madsen turned things around with that marvellous partnership.

Very impressed with the bowling considering we have so many out for various reasons.
Good to see Nick Potts and Rory Haydon amongst the wickets and providing support to Ben Aitchison who contributed so much to this victory.

Certainly back in the mix with back to back wins.

  13. For.some reason, I thought Madsen might be done, after his shoulder injury. Of course, he has come.back better than ever. Why did I ever doubt him? Kris

  14. I wonder what went on in the dressing room after the Gloucestershire game.
Whatever it was Derbyshire have been a completely different team in the last 2 games. It looks like everyone has a determination about them that was erstwhile absent.
What is clear though is that the current squad of players is talented enough to succeed when they put their minds to it.
If this team turns up for the remaining 8 matches promotion is eminently possible. It's a pity that there is now a break for the other game.

  15. A superb and well-deserved victory, especially given the number of bowlers missing. Of course, Ben Aitchison was superb and ably supported by the rest of the team. Nick Potts did well and I’m pleased he was given the opportunity.

As others have said, the break in 4-day cricket comes at the wrong time but let’s hope we carry this momentum through the season.
