Leicestershire v Derbyshire Vitality Blast game 3

Derbyshire 230-5 (Jewell 58*, Andersson 57, Donald 49)

Leicestershire 145 (Turner53, Cox 34, Andersson 6-23, Aitchison 2-7)

Derbyshire won by 85 runs

What a great win! I'll need to not watch on a more regular basis...

An excellent batting performance, which I will let you fill in the details for, with a final total that was always going to put the other side under pressure.

Donald and Andersson make her really impressive opening pair and that must have been quite special to watch tonight. Also good to see Caleb in the runs, while Monty was again offering a final flourish. If you discount Amrit Basra's three-ball salvo at the end, of course.

Then a great start with the ball, with three wickets in the first two overs. Jack Morley continuing to impress in this format, while Big Ben Aitchison helped in a perfect start

Was anyone concerned when Cox and Turner got going, after recent events?

Finally, Martin Andersson, all rounder de luxe! What a performance, following his 57 with 6-23

I'm looking forward to your comments tonight. Please get them in and I will publish as soon as I am able...

Nottinghamshire next. We all feel much better about that one now, don't we?

  1. Derbyshire looked a shambles when Turner and Cox where batting and i thought here we go again. Then Martin Andersson came on to bowl and it was the Martin Andersson show including one incredible c&b. 50 runs and 6 wickets, is that a record in the T20 blast or maybe in all T20? Well done Derbyshire even if it was against a poor Leicestershire side. On to Friday.

    1. I have tried to find out about Martin Andersson's figures in this match and as far as I can tell its never happened before in top level professional T20 cricket, certainly not in the T20 blast. i.e 6 wickets and 50 runs in the same match.

    2. Actually, Andrew Hall did it in 2008. 66 runs and 6 wickets for Somerset.

  2. My Fantasy Cricket team name of Andersson’s Your Man(dersson) seems quite prescient after that! What a performance.

I took was unable to watch with my other half inconveniently having a birthday and us out for a meal. Caught some of the commentary in the car and had wicket alerts to slyly keep an eye on. Great performance even if the opposition seemed very poor. Hope for more of the same Friday!

    1. Yes their fielding was awful although it did bobble and have divots it is worth watching Andersson's spell back . exceptional with a few good catches from the bowler and Whiteley , who was yet again outstanding in the field (thankfully he didn't bowl though 😂😂) .Ethan

  4. That was excellent. We were helped by some poor Leics bowling & catching, but professionally took advantage of that to post an imposing total. What I liked about the bowling is that we learned that on that pitch slow bowling was the way to go. Andersson was sensational, which does raise the question as to why this was his first bowl in the competition.
Hopefully the confidence from our first win will lead to a victory on Friday

  5. Should really be three from three but hopefully this result will up the morale of the team . Hope Andersson will still deliver on Friday after this performance. Ethan

  6. I said last year I don't know why Anderssen doesn't bowl more and said it again this season so I'm glad I've been proven right! Facet

  7. Andersson got us out of a bit a hole there, because things were not heading the right way, when he came on to bowl. But, variations are massive in T20 and he executed them well. Aitchison was superb with the ball too and is doing ok, in what is his secondary format. Morley has been a big plus too. The batting will generally take care of itself, although Madsen looks a little out of sorts. Kris.

  8. That was more like it, but Arthur does need to answer the question why Martin didn't bowl in the two previous games.

  10. Although Leics were poor, at last the team were as dominant and merciless as they could be to make the win never in doubt. A real team effort and Mr Arthur would have loved the togetherness and how streetwise every player was tonight. Lastly , even at nearly 38 years of age, is there a better catcher and fielder than Ross Whiteley in the county game ? Nobody IMO !

  11. Leicestershire were poor in all aspects of the game ,but a win is a win . Potts and Javed are a worry but hopefully Chappell is fit to play Friday .Notts are 2 defeats from 2 so all to play for .

Fantastic performance with bat and ball, my only gripe is with Donald when he looks set for a huge score he produces an awful shot and loses his wicket. He should've been set for 80-100 tonight he was looking in fine nick, then a bang average ball gets him out
Andersson is just class, what a signing he's been for us, one of MA's few successes. Let's stuff Notts now lads

    1. Sorry I can't agree with that. Nye's method is to hit every ball for 4 or 6. With that occasionally he won't execute it perfectly and will get out. I'm sure he puts in plenty of practice to lessen the chance of that happening. However his innings went a long way to winning that game.

It's Martin Andersson's world and, tonight at least, we're all living in it! Well done that man.

  14. A good win, although perhaps tempered by how poor Leicestershire were, I'm not sure I can recall a poorer t20 side and hope they find a way to improve quickly.

Still you can only beat what's in front of you and that was achieved emphatically.

It's a real shame Donald didn't go on for a big score, also used up 9 dot balls. Churlish to criticise perhaps but whilst his hitting is 10/10 there are areas to work on to both win more matches and contribute to the team more.

Andersson was absolutely superb and has become a serious all format player now. Also pleased to see Jewell with a decent knock, hopefully confidence restored a bit.

    1. Great to catch a win on the road. Dominant throughout apart from one over each from Potts and Javed. Free Thatcher sun hat is now the lucky hat that will be travelling to Derby on Friday and then to Chelmsford on Sunday. Three wins from three nailed on with the lucky hat (as long as Anderson bowls)

  15. Well we've had snatching defeat from the jaws of victory but this was a good win
Looks it's Derbyshire so I remain mainly pessimistic with a hint of optimism.
Though that optimism is still there, am I a fool?

  16. A great win in the end and hats off to Andersson. I was thinking ‘ here we go again’ when that partnership was building. Has MA been asked why he didn’t bowl at Yorkshire? Our batting is fine but I still have concerns about our bowling. Hayden needs to come in. I would drop Akif, how underwhelming he has been, but it is likely to be Potts. Hopefully we can take the momentum through to tomorrow and get a win. Grant from Telford

  17. Delighted with the win, and an absolute stellar performance from Andersson, surely the best non overseas signing we've made for some considerable time.

However, Javed continues to be a concern. You might get away with gifting free hits against Leicestershire when we've got 230 on the board, but it will cost us at some point. Hoping he can put on a performance on Friday, otherwise questions will need to be asked.

  18. The problem with Martin Andersson putting in a performance like that on a TV game could mean a few Hundred franchises may have an interest when selecting wildcards and we lose him for the 50 over competition. Lets hope they were watching another channel.

Javed is playing like someone who has literally just arrived in a new country and has had no time to settle. Saying all that, I'm not at all convinced he'll get much better when he has settled

    1. Must say I remain unconvinced as to the value of an overseas quick in this format. Even the very best available regularly go round the park. I'd much rather use one of our own and spend the money on better 4 day players.

  20. What a great win. Had it not been for the 92 in 38 balls for Leicestershire's 4th wicket it would have been a total thrashing.
Andersson's performance was amazing. Has MA explained why he didn't bowl in the first 2 games?
Plenty of plusses in this game but I would like to see another bowler tried out. 3 bowlers conceded 69 in 4 overs. A remarkable contrast to Andersson and Aitchison.

  21. A much needed win. The batting is under a lot of pressure to go huge with the bowling outside of Morley and Aitchison nowhere near consistent enough…until Andersson finally got given the ball. There was the partnership that could probably only give the traumatised Derbyshire fan a reason to panic after setting 231 to win but when we just needed a bowler to come on and be consistent to win the game Andersson came and blew the game away, what a signing he has been.

  22. Terrific performance - Martin Andersson take a bow or two! Haydon for Javed for me on Friday; should be a full house given that result and the forecast.

  23. After that victory our net run rate is impressive. A win against Notts and we are back in with a shout. Personally I think with a better bowling attack we could qualify but we need to pick the best players available. I think Haydon would be a better option than Potts and currently Chappell if fit would edge out Javed. Now I know those changes especially the latter aren't going to happen. Either way with a good start with the bat from Nye & Martin we should be capable of setting a high total tomorrow.

Why are our overseas signings 90% of the time pretty awful?

    1. Honestly, I don't think it's just us. It is a format that doesn't lend itself to spectacular returns, unless you are willing to spend serious money that still not effective.
But I do think with our original two spinners we would have been a different proposition...
