Derbyshire 604-7d
Northamptonshire 228 and 263 (Bartlett 65*, McSweeney 62, Chappell 4-53, Bashir 3-70)
Derbyshire won by an innings and 113 runs
Just time for a nap before watching a final day that shredded nerves but ultimately saw Derbyshire triumph by an innings and 113 runs after an excellent bowling display that matched a team display that was impossible to fault.
I don't think I have seen Zak Chappell bowl better this season than he did in this game. He has always been a willing workhorse and the workload has perhaps sometimes got the better of him, but here there was added hostility as he ran in hard, bristled with aggression and got his just reward with four wickets.
At the other end, Shoaib Bashir again showed his international credentials. While it appears likely that he will be overlooked for the first Test of the summer (according to reports) he is benefiting from the bowling that he gets in this Derbyshire attack, while the county reaps the rewards of him being in it. You don't often see spinners who offer similar aggression to their pace counterparts, but Bashir does and it is a welcome sight in a Derbyshire side that could often be accused of being too 'nice'.
Yet this was an all-round effort. Aitchison got the first wicket of the day, while Haydon went for one run an over, always challenging. There were times when an eventual win seemed unlikely, especially when McSweeney and Bartlett battled together for 25 overs, but you couldn't fault the effort, the focus and the desire to win.
It was hard to believe that this was the same side that lost to Kent and Gloucestershire. The visitors were second in the table before this game, having played some very good cricket. Here, they were comprehensively outplayed from a Derbyshire side that was 'on it' from start to finish.
McSweeney played well for Northamptonshire, even if at times seeming intent to use every bat in the dressing room. After a shaky start he looked a good player, but he will have been disappointed to have been 'strangled' down the leg side for the second time in the game.
Bartlett also battled hard. He was courted by Derbyshire before he signed a three-year deal in Northampton and might have had greater opportunity had he chosen differently, but he did a wonderful job for his side here in resisting for 175 balls.
Unexpected and final resistance came from George Scrimshaw, never someone with pretensions to batting feats, but twenty overs and several bowling changes later he was still there, playing straight and using his reach to resist what was thrown at him. As the final twenty overs ticked by, shots of the crowd showed the tension, likely replicated in myriad watching living rooms around the world. Were Derbyshire, as in the Worcestershire game, to be thwarted by a rearguard action?
Was that a sharp chance put down by Guest off Bashir? Then one just past Jewell's outstretched hand at the other end. I messaged a good friend.
Eleven overs to go. Andersson is on, runs in, goes wide on the crease and arrows it in to the front pad of Scrimshaw. Leg before after 55 balls of resistance. Fair play, George, that was a fine effort. Peakfan's prophecy, or Psychic Steve? Either way, we'll take it and credit the skipper for the right call.
A terrific game of cricket which I loved seeing in the flesh for three days. I think I was probably warmer than most who were there on the fourth AND I had two dogs lying at my feet as I watched.
The first win of the season. Let's go down to Lord's and do it again.
Middlesex are second now. You've got previous on second-placed teams, lads...😉
I look forward to your comments tonight. Get them coming in
PS to my Essex friends who I met in Derby, your journey home tonight will be on air!
I was on the edge of my seat for the whole match . So tense. That Chappell over win us the match . Stating his case for his place . Basra on the field for quite a bit . Was it Came who was off and is he injure? First win but should be at least 2 . Lovely to chat with you , Steve, for the first three days . Ethan
ReplyDeleteApparently there was a bit of illness within the team, hence more activity from the twelfth man than normal! I don't believe Came is injured.
DeleteYes Ethan there is a bug in the squad and there were a few comings and goings from the field
DeleteIt was great chatting to you too, Ethan!
DeleteAbsolutely brilliant, the level of application shown by the team was top notch. Guest & Chappell were almost unrecognisable from recent performances (I called for both to be dropped, perhaps they read this & I can take credit), both were excellent.
ReplyDeleteThe challenge now is to sustain this quality of performance, but for now the guys should enjoy the victory

Pre game , I commented “bat 4 sessions and build on that !”
ReplyDeleteA thoroughly convincing and morale boosting win .
Without the mad hour at Old Trafford we would be second , need to build on this , good to see players who were out of form contributing to the win .
Well - after the Kent match I suggested in a post on this blog that Jewell, Montgomery, Guest and Chappell all should be dropped. I was disappointed at the start of day 1 when all were selected.
ReplyDeleteAll played key roles in the victory. I am very happy to eat humble pie and acknowledge that Micky Arthur may just possibly know more about the strengths of the squad than I do!
Well done to all Excellent performance with everyone playing their part in the victory - onward and upward.
The match winning LBW looked generous but we'll take it.Simon
ReplyDeleteOh Derbyshire, where have you been until now. An unrecognisable performance from the previous four matches one I certainly didn't see coming. It just shows that the talent is there in this squad and hopefully this should be the catalyst for further improvement. Bashir is looking a shrewd signing, Andersson class also. A great team performance all round.
ReplyDeleteWell done Derbyshire!
Like many others, I was all for dropping several underperforming players for this game. I'm pleased to say I was wrong but it would be nice to think that the same players read the Blog and decided to up their game!
ReplyDeleteChapel Guy
Oh I think the coaching staff worked wonders getting an underperforming group back on an even keel. The switch of batting lineup also helped, but like the old saying goes, form is temporary, class is permanent. These are good players and it was always just a matter of time.
DeleteBut they do read the blog and that's why I will never allow comments that are unfairly critical or personal...
Amazing how players respond when they're being challenged for their place by guys in the second team.....long may it continue.
ReplyDeleteI agree about Zak, great to see him back to something near his best. Always gives 100 % no matter what.
I shall not be changing my assertion that we will not be troubling Durham and Lancashire for a place in the top 2 but it's a pleasing performance. Well done!
Great to get a win. 5th time lucky but this was a game where we outplayed the opposition on all 4 days. After an underwhelming start to the season much needed. Praise has to go to Mickey as the tactical changes in the batting order contributed greatly to the win.
ReplyDeleteJohn Life Member
Agreed, John. He got it right here
DeleteReece and Haydon have been superb this season. It was pleasing, to see many others have upped their game, too.
ReplyDeleteThe openers’ strong start set the tone for the performance, and hopefully, Chappell can continue this form.

Excellent result! I'm happy to admit that I'm one who's said that we're just too nice as a clubregularly before now.
ReplyDeleteA bit of a hard edge is good and I really hope that the win is power for another soon.
Glad you saw some good stuff Steve.
Andy
Thanks mate!
DeleteA few first team regulars seemed to up their game for this one and there's no doubt that Basra, Potts and Wagstaff are knocking on the
ReplyDeletedoor. Bashir was excellent again. I had my doubts, but he looks every inch an international cricketer. Kris
Yes he just needed time great cricketer but thrown under the bus by the ECB . Ethan
DeleteNot so much ECB as McCullum/Keys, Ethan. It was odd to exclude him from the tour selections and even odder for sections of the media to mark him as they did for performance, when they didn't play.
DeleteIt's clear his confidence has risen at Derbyshire and that he feels happy and at home. In the grand scheme of things, a year with the county before perhaps a winter tour would do him the world of good
Brilliant win. I too called for Basra and Wagstaff to play. I will reserve judgement until after the Middlesex game. With the squad we have we should consistently perform to somewhere near this level. But let’s enjoy the win for now. Grant from Telford
ReplyDeleteIt's taken a while, but we got over the line at last. Hopefully a morale booster - a very disciplined performance and some excellent bowling over the last couple of days. (MA has given them an extra day off apparently - well deserved!)
ReplyDeleteI watched most (not all) of this online and I'm very heartened by this display.
ReplyDeleteI was in the "changing the batting order won't be enough, change the players" camp, but tonight I'm happy to concede that I was wrong.
Several players with question marks against their names absolutely stepped up. Guest and Jewell contributed, of course, but like others, I think Zak Chappell was outstanding; snarling, nasty and aggressive. That's the Zak we need and I hope it rubs off on a few others. We need to be more aggressive. We were, and it worked.
Bashir is a great signing. Jack Morley is unlucky because he's not done much wrong, but Bashir is obviously an upgrade. And so great to watch! An aggressive spinner that can tie down an end but is also a wicket-taking threat! When did we last have that in the red-ball squad?!
Agreed, Ant. Morley is unlucky, but players at all levels can relate when a new player takes his/her place. Just have to battle your way back and he will realise that.
DeleteFantastic performance, with all the players putting in a shift. We need to take this momentum to Lords on Friday.
ReplyDeleteThat comment was from Downthewicket.
ReplyDeleteMorning Steve,
ReplyDeleteExhalted and knackered in the same breath. We wandered in at 2200hrs last night after a day that had everything.
Proper red ball cricketing drama.
The overs were ticking away and i thought they would escape.
A fantastic 4 days cricket with the result in doubt till nigh on 1800hrs on the last day.
Ive also got the start of a tan added to on a lovely late afternoon yesterday.
Happy - you bet ya
As Forest Gump might have said, "Derbyshire are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get".
ReplyDelete7 good days, 9 bad days, 4 good days.
I hereby put in my request for 4 more good days against Middlesex.
Late to the party, but would just like to say it was very pleasing to see a good performance across 4 days. The team has looked good in spells in the previous games but not for long enough and then had a session or two that were a disaster.
ReplyDeleteHopefully we can find that consistency moving forward.
