Shahzad departs

While the departure of someone from the club that you support is never pleasant, that of Ajmal Shahzad, announced today, had an air of inevitability about it, certainly for me.

Regular readers will know that for some time now I have felt a 'disconnect' between the bowling coach and the bowlers. There had to be, because regardless of anecdotal 'evidence', the returns of those bowlers across formats were diminishing. There are some very good bowlers in our club, better than the collective returns of the past couple of summers have suggested.

Yes, there was international recognition for Pat Brown, Sam Conners and George Scrimshaw, but do the figures of those three suggest they have improved? The same goes for Harry Moore, who now needs someone to oversee his rehabilitation and return to full fitness. I am not sure how much he will have directly worked with Shahzad anyway, or whether his England call up and progress is due to natural talent, parental guidance and the Pathway coaches.

I had advocated a change and while claiming no responsibility, I am pleased that there will be one for 2026. For supporters to get behind 'the masterplan', accountability of the coaching setup had to be robust and the bowling unit has simply not functioned as it should do.

No one could complain about the returns of batters, nor the fine job being done by Ben Smith. Matches were being lost by poor bowling, tactics and players who seemed to have lost their collective erstwhile mojo. It is a difficult job, of course, especially when the bloke 22 yards away is trying to hit you to all corners. Yet there were times when the game plan wasn't working, others when there was no clear evidence of there being one in place.

There are plenty of excellent bowling coaches out there who will be very interested in the opportunity to work at Derbyshire.

Why wouldn't they? Chappell, Moore, Haydon, Aitchison, Brown, Potts - not to mention Jake Green and Matt Stewart - is a fine collective of seamers to work with, even without considering Messrs Reece, Dal and Andersson. The young spinners, Morley and Hawkins, will fast track their progress with the right coach.

These are good - very good - cricketers who just need the right voice in their ear to get an extra ten per cent of value.

There will no doubt be a recruitment process to get the right man to work across both the first team squad and the Pathway. If the bowling progresses as the batting has, we can expect further progress from Derbyshire in 2026 and beyond.

I wish Ajmal Shahzad the best in his future endeavours, but the time was absolutely right for a change of direction, whether or not he is leaving for a new challenge or was told 'the times they are a'changing'. Doing it now enables recruitment to take place and the new man to work with his new charges over the crucial winter months.

We will all watch developments with considerable interest...

  1. Think this is probably good news , not many of the bowlers have improved over the last couple of seasons.
I seem to remember that his presence was one of the reasons for Sam Connors leaving.
The bowling in the T20 was definitely the weaker suit. Martin

I suppose it’s sometimes a little hard to tell from the outside but like you say the fact that none of the bowlers seem to be improving and a few seem to have gone backwards does suggest this is very good news

  3. Walk or pushed, you decide! Should have happened earlier for me, but we move on. It will be very interesting to see who replaces him. Losing Steve Kirby some years ago was a massive blow.

    1. Yes, we need to find another Steve Kirby, very well regarded as a bowling coach.

I know what I think, Jasper. Time was right for a change, for credibility, if nothing else

    2. Well said Jasper, you are spot on,.

      Good news indeed.

Watching from the boundary during practice, Kirby was outstanding and you could see it in how the players reacted/performed. Sadly it was never the same under Amjal.

Connors really developed and from his body language he really enjoyed working under Kirby, under Amjal I could not say the same.

It is laughable for him to claim any credit for Brown as he has been a shadow of his Worcester days. I feel real sorry for Brown.

Hopefully this will hopefully be catalyst people like Brown need to get back to their former performances.

  4. Whilst our batting is certainly stronger than our bowling we do need to bear in mine the Derby pitch. Our bowling numbers will be poorer and our batting numbers slightly inflated because of it.

Hopefully next season we can see a better pitch and more effective bowling coaching as well.

    1. True, but we play half of our matches away and other teams seemed to generally bowl better than we did on it. I hope a replacement is in place by Christmas and look forward to news as it breaks

  5. I agree with the post and all the replies. His position was untenable. Will be interesting to see if Brown and to a lesser extent Chappel can reverse their decline under a new coach. If not they should be next out the door. John life member

    1. I think they will, John. Zak is an integral part of the side for me and Pat just needs someone with the right advice in his ear. Getting those two right makes a big impact on next summer in all formats

    2. Wow! Incredibly harsh on Chappell, it's not like he's been poor. Useful with the bat too. Just not quite at his best, at times, with the ball.

    3. Zak may not be as good as he has been but getting rid ?!!! Crikey I can think of at least 6 players who would be higher up that list !! Crazy !!

  6. A good move for both parties. Probably should have happened 12 months ago. I wish him well, but more important is who we get as a replacement.

    1. Quote….Bowling 452 overs, the most by any bowler, Chappell remained fit and was the second highest wicket-taker in first class and List A matches, and third in T20 cricket. He also scored 581 runs with a best score of 61.
Pat Brown played most of the summer with an injury which he has just had operated on. “ next out of the door” is very harsh ! Both will be back stronger next year I’m sure 👍 Jason
