Leicestershire 484 and 357-9 declared (Tickner 3-82, Morley 3-84)
Derbyshire 393 and 305-4 (Madsen 96, Jewell 73, Guest 68* Reece 38*)
Match drawn
They could have declared overnight, or after three or four overs this morning, but instead opted to bat Derbyshire completely out of the game and then attempt to bowl them out in 86 overs.
Perhaps they thought there would be a collapse, or that the pitch would suddenly misbehave. But it was a flawed idea, because for Derbyshire to go for the runs and potentially lose wickets in the process, there needed to be a carrot, or incentive. They even had boundary riders from the outset, so were not overly aggressive with field settings.
It was a case of batting out time. Perhaps briefly, when Wayne Madsen and Caleb Jewell were together, there was a brief consideration of a chase, but the dismissal of the Australian made the draw points the prize.
Jewell made his fourth half century in as many innings and again looked a very fine player. For me, his next challenge is to go on to a match defining century, because red ball cricket is rarely won by fifties, regardless of how stylish and enjoyable they are. As one old professional once said to me, when you have that many on the board you are seeing it like a football and should be 'drinking at the well' while the eye is in. There will be plenty of days when it isn't, for anyone.
Madsen again led from the front with a stylish innings, the only surprise being when he missed out on yet another century. But he can be proud of how his team battled in this game and how once again he has shown himself one of the all-time greats of the county. As well as a nigh-perennial problem for Leicestershire, averaging over sixty against them throughout his career
It was left to Brooke Guest and Luis Reece to find batting form and steer Derbyshire to a comfortable draw. There were a couple of loud appeals against the former, though more indicative of a lack of understanding of the lbw law, as viewed from short leg, in the second instance.
In the end, both sides will be happy with the draw. Derbyshire showed that they will be prepared to graft this summer and will be very satisfied, from the position that they were in on day two.
Leicestershire? A good side, but unless they show greater willingness to risk defeat in going for a win, I don't see enough variation in their attack to really challenge for promotion at the end of the summer. They missed Chris Wright here and cannot depend on his body holding together throughout the summer.
In closing, Derbyshire's second team are in action tomorrow and I suspect that David Lloyd might fancy a bat in that fixture. He seems to be pushing at the ball at present, never a good move as an opener. He remains the best option for us in that position, because we cannot burden Luis Reece, with greater responsibility than he already has in opening the bowling.
I think David will come again and his importance to the balance of the Derbyshire side is clear. But Mitch Wagstaff will also aim to impress and offers a similar skill set, if required.
But a good effort. I don't think anyone can deny that.
Unbeaten, going into game three. We would have taken that in advance, I think?
Perfectly summed up by your good self. I totally agree with your assessment of Leicestershire. A very strong batting line up. But a team of medium pace dobbers bowling wise. David Lloyd is the only obvious weak point in the side but it’s hard to imagine at the age of 32 with a batting average of 29 he’s going to get much better. Overall though a great start to the season
ReplyDeleteYes peakfan and decisions like that are killing the 4 day game sadly.People pay good money and want to be entertained. As you said i
ReplyDeletet could hae been such an entertaing last day bit Leicstershire had other ideas!peakfan
No problem with Leicestershire batting on. They were in the box seat and up to them. However, speculate to accumulate does spring to mind.
ReplyDeleteMA being here with no distractions making a difference? There's no doubt he is a top notch coach and it does seem to be a steadier (and happier) ship this season, so hoping this is the case. Not knocking David Lloyd as captain, but having Wayne at the helm also seems to help. Pretty sure Lloyd will regain form, he's too good a bat not to.
First two games have been great. We've all see many Derbyshire sides lose on fourth days like this one.
I'm quietly confident about this season, there is no one in this division we really need to fear, and surely confidence within the squad must be building. Our lads are as good as anyone, just takes a bit of self belief.
Maybe a corner really has been turned?
ReplyDeleteI cannot think there would have been many days in the last 3 or 4 seasons when you could have been confident that Derbyshire would be able to play out 80 plus overs on day 4.
Today it was never in doubt that we would be able to secure a draw. Indeed for a couple of overs with Jewell and Madsen together it looked like they might just have a stab at a win. In truth that was never on, but we go on to game 3 with confidence.
Yes Lloyd needs runs and Came struggled in this game, but all the other cogs are working.
Long may it continue.
Another good result, particularly from 6 down and a long way off the follow on in the first innings. I’m convinced that we get walloped from that position last year. The only obvious weak link currently is Lloyd but maybe a bit in the 2’s does him some good and gets the ball on the bat.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to have a bit of ‘ticker’ this year, which is lovely to see.
How long can Wayne go on…? Forever, I hope.

Leicestershire's tactics were hard to fathom. As you have said Steve, they did not give themselves sufficient time to bowl us out or for us to have a go at reaching the target and in the process lose wickets. For Derbyshire...onwards and upwards!
ReplyDeleteA very good fightback and a comfortable draw but we should have been in the driving seat by batting first.
ReplyDeleteWin the toss and bat first 9 out of 10.
Wayne Madsen - build a statue. 😉
ReplyDeleteLots of positives from this game. We competed right to the end, never looking like we'd collapse.
ReplyDeleteYes, Jewell needs to get past 100. I think he will. He looks a class act.
In this line up, we bat deep. I think Morley - who is looking an excellent spinner - has potential to play some decent knocks.
I don't see Lloyd as an opener at all. Harry Came would be a much better bet for me.
ReplyDeleteIn a rainy Nice it was a pleasure to watch an accomplished performance on the last day to secure the draw. This should give a lot of confidence and everyone has played their part. Long may this continue! Looking forward to Northants this weekend...
ReplyDeleteThere was me thinking it is always nice in Nice...but yes, a solid, battling display. Teams can go a long way with such an ethic
DeleteDisappointing end really and that was down to Leicester's poor decision to carry on batting too long. Derbyshire are looking ok at the minute the balance of the side looks good, David Lloyd concerns me as an opening bat though, could we not play Reece or Came there partnering Jewell?
