Derbyshire 267-5 (Lloyd 93, Came 73, Madsen 49)
v Middlesex
In the last hour, the second new ball seemed to change things and neither Guest nor Madsen could do much about the deliveries that removed them.
Let's face it, the Middlesex attack is probably a strong as a unit as there is in the division and Derbyshire's total, having been put in, doesn't seem too bad, if they can add more in the morning.
I was really pleased to see David Lloyd make some runs after the early dismissal of Caleb Jewell, who didn't seem to do a lot wrong either. Also good to see Harry Came back in the runs, on what appears to be a battling day
So I will leave today's comments for you to fill in the blanks!
Seemed to be a right slog out there today and runs being scored at a slow rate. You could tell Lloyd and Came were desperate for runs with how cautious they were both playing, didn't make for great viewing tbqh. If we're all out for just north of 300 I think we'll be up against it for the rest of this game
ReplyDeleteA proper old school day of cricket with us just about coming out on top despite the loss of 2 wickets at the end. Ideal scenario 3 more dry days and Morley and Thomson bowling them out on a day 4 spinners pitch. I was surprised Lloyd got another chance but hats off to him he certainly took it with a very good innings. He deserved a century
ReplyDeleteLove Berwick and surrounds Steve, hope you had a good few days.
ReplyDeleteI mentioned this particular match as being a benchmark in how we are progressing this year. You're right about the Middx attack as being one of the best in the division, so I'd say this was a decent day for us. Wayne getting out late on may cost us, but how nice it is to be looking forward to seeing the score throughout the day, rather than with the feeling of dread the last couple of years brought. Long may it continue!
I was delighted to see David Lloyd put away his high risk shots and graft away. A century would have been richly deserved until he expired to the Middlesex "every ball is a bouncer" ploy. He took a while to drag himself off and he'll probably still have his head in his hands, but this innings should give him a confidence boost going forward. Harry wasn't as fluent but he also looked nailed on for a century until he couldn't quite clear mid-off. Add in a Wayne cameo with some gorgeous shots to make it a good day for Derbyshire against the toss.
ReplyDeleteFair play to Lloyd, he knuckled down and left the flamboyant (reckless?) shots in his locker for a different day. Having being put in, to only lose 5 wickets is a good effort. Tight bowling from Middlesex meant we never 'got away' but if we can push on towards 350 then we're definitely in the game.
ReplyDeleteI found it gripping today. Two batters playing for their place in the team, but also playing for the team by laying foundations. Middlesex have a very strong attack that gives little away, yet Lloyd and Came applied themselves magnificently to the task at hand. Lloyd's compulsive hooking could become a problem, or he just learns to whack it into the stands! Came just needed to keep going. They will be kicking themselves, but well played both.
ReplyDeleteWell in my last post I said Lloyd had no form to return to.
ReplyDeleteI'll get my coat!
Also good to see both Lloyd came and marsden acknowledge the crowd fully when reaching half century. Always seems quite depressing when some players just point their bats at the changing rooms and nowhere else as if the paying public do not matter
ReplyDeleteHear Hear! Always been a bugbear of mine. Wayne always acknowledges the crowd though, without fail.
DeleteReally pleased for David Lloyd, and also Harry Came.
ReplyDeleteWe do seem to be forming a nasty habit of getting close to a century and getting out across the team.
The morning session will be pivotal, if we can push on to 400 we will be in decent shape. Get knocked over cheaply and we could be up against it very quickly.
A good and gritty performance against a very good bowling attack. Lloyd and Came were excellent against a ball which was always doing something. I think that both will regret the shots they got out to : both deserved a century. While the loss of Guest and Madsen before close of play was a handicap I hope we can kick on this morning and put 350-400 on the board. If our attack gets the same help from the pitch that would give us a great chance against a team that is superior to those we have played so far.
ReplyDeleteAllez Derbyshire !
I am really happy to see Came and Lloyd in the runs. The partnership in the match might be a very significant partnership. They took quite bit time out of the match to get us into a good position. I think 1st hour today will be important. I hope we can clear 300 + I look at Middlesex team as one strongest sides on paper in Division 2. They not yet reached highest of performance level they are capable of achieving. I hope we get Du Plooy early as was finding it but form last game.
ReplyDeleteDid not watch the match, so can't add much of value except for a practical and logistical outlook. Minimum requirements would be 350 from here. That would apply a little bit of pressure on their batsman. It looks like only 2 batting points are possible, as we have scored slowly.
