Derbyshire 472 (Andersson 107, Reece 60, Fernandes 3-53)
Middlesex 101-3 (Tickner 2-23)
Derbyshire lead by 371 runs
A second first class century in as many matches put Derbyshire in the driving seat today, although there appears to be little in the pitch, once the new ball has lost its seam and hardness.
Andersson and Luis Reece batted throughout the morning session with sound defence and no shortage of punishing strokes. When Reece was run out, Zak Chappell lent the necessary support to enable the former Middlesex all rounder to reach another splendid century. With Blair Tickner lending further support, the home total became one that appeared out of the question at the start of play.
Then two wickets for Tickner and a third for Andersson put the home side in the box seat, before the limping du Plooy, struck on the foot by Reece, had to retire hurt before the close.
With a lead of 371 runs, Derbyshire are in a good position here, but unless the pitch deteriorates, which seems unlikely at this stage, it is hard to see where seventeen wickets can come from. The first session tomorrow will be very important, but once again the fighting spirit was a highlight of the day.
Derbyshire would not have nearly doubled their overnight score last year. There is a refreshing new steel and determination about them, which is a joy to watch, especially for those used to years of capitulation.
Andersson, with his century, a wicket and catch again showed himself a very talented player and shrewd acquisition by Mickey Arthur. Meanwhile, in the final session, Tickner ran in hard and was rewarded with two good wickets.
There is a long haul ahead and the likeliest result on a slow pitch appears to be a draw.
But early wickets tomorrow and sometimes things can go your way. And if du Plooy is unable to continue his innings - who knows?
Excellent work today. The Derbyshire of old would have simply collapsed after Madsen so it's refreshing to see a middle order that score runs.
ReplyDeleteTo get 3 fairly early wickets os great too given how we've really struggled to take wickets these last few years! Still not sure we have enough to take 20 on a slow nothing pitch but of wickets in the morning with no du ploy then hopefully they'll go for the kill! Facet.
Yes, we all forgot in comments yesterday that Andersson might be up for it against his former chums! Fantastic, and good to see excellent contributions from other team mates too. Received especially.
ReplyDeleteLooks like
Sorry if a chunk of that comment went missing!
ReplyDeleteA brilliant performance today. We seem a completely different side to last season. Blair tickner is so obviously happy to be bowling and his spirit seems to be rubbing off on the other bowlers. We seem a far better balanced team then Middlesex who are a good team. I think if we get two full days play we will either win or get very close to winning slow pitch or not. I fancy Morley and Thomson to get a few wickets especially on day four
ReplyDeleteA great day’s cricket. We are suddenly looking a very good team. Blair ticknors enthusiasm is infectious and the rest of the bowling unit seem to feed off it. I think we will either win or come very close to winning if we get 2 full days play with Morley and Thomson getting a few wickets each. Who knows what happened in the close season other then a captaincy change but we now look like one of the top 3 or 4 teams in the division
ReplyDeleteFantastic team effort. I agree that last season we would have collapsed in this kind of game. But this season we are finding runs all the way down the order (Tickner is proving very handy with the bat). Andersson is proving to be an inspired signing. Two centuries already plus wickets and catches.
ReplyDeleteI think we can win this game.
Another great day - long may this continue! Andersson really does look a very good player - two centuries so far batting at 8 and then 7 gives us real depth. We have the upper hand in this match and hopefully can make the most of it. It will be difficult perhaps to take 17 more wickets but we have the variety and above all the team spirit to make it happen.
ReplyDeleteI thought Middlesex were poor in the field yesterday, in contrast to the first day. Another confirmation that we are on top.....
Allez Derbyshire!
Managed to pop in for the last, free, session yesterday. Huge efforts going in from the bowlers, in the field and a very obvious great team spirit all round.
ReplyDeleteAnd a wicket taken already today!
It's got a grand feel to it
