Durham v Derbyshire day 4

As I write this blog, with the rain battering off the patio doors and the wind blowing the plants to and fro with gusto, there appears little likelihood of further play at Chester-le-Street, with the scene replicated there in tweets from the ground.

It is a pity, because that extra batting bonus point that would otherwise have been a formality may prove crucial by the end of the final round of matches. The pitch was way too benign for a positive result to have been forced and credit must go to the Derbyshire bowlers for managing to get through their opponents on such a track.

Indeed, the ability of a largely inexperienced attack to dismiss the opposition has been a feature of the Bob Willis Trophy campaign. Regardless of what happens elsewhere in the final round of matches, we have done extremely well with novices. Conners, Melton, Cohen and Aitchison have all done well, taking wickets at regular enough intervals for the team to get into the ascendancy, while the batting has looked every bit the force that it appeared pre-season.

We all knew about the strength of the 'fab four' at the top of the order, of course. Yet, speaking as a non-statistician, I'd be willing to bet my house on our never having two batsmen, normally at seven and eight in the order, who average over a hundred, as Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Anuj Dal currently do. Both have looked very impressive and with Matt Critchley looking a far straighter, more correct and downright impressive batsman than in the past, I struggle to think of a batting order that has had such depth.

I do feel for Alex Hughes and Tom Wood, who have done little wrong, but it is hard to see how either can force a way in right now, with Harvey Hosein or Brooke Guest behind the stumps at six. Alex will doubtless be in the T20 side and few will fancy coming up against a side where there are genuine batsmen down to number nine in the order.

The professional performance at Durham has been overshadowed by the injury to Ben Aitchison yesterday, who injured ankle ligaments in a training drill. He seems unlikely to play again this season, but has surely done enough to earn a contract for at least two years. His well-grooved action and impressive accuracy would have made him a shoo-in for the Vitality Blast, but that will need to wait.

Our only problem seems to be running out of players. Ravi Rampaul may now not be able to get over from Trinidad and Michael Cohen's wavering lines don't suggest him as an obvious pick for the short form at present. Perhaps Tony Palladino could be our 'wild card' after several years of hardly playing the format? Or do we utilise the all-rounders and pack the side with batsmen?

With our next fixture the T20 against Leicestershire on Thursday, I'll hazard a guess at this team from the resources available:

Godleman, Reece, Madsen, du Plooy, Critchley, Wood, Hudson-Prentice, Hughes, Dal, Hosein, McKiernan

You could omit Wood and McKiernan for two seamers, but the eleven above has seven bowling options  anyway..

Thoughts?

Postscript: a player who has really impressed me in this shortened season has been Matt Critchley. He signed a two-year deal before the action started and looks a serious all-round talent now.

He has always looked a cricketer, but his batting looks much more straight, his defence better organised than in previous years. He gave his wicket away twice, but still averages over fifty, Meanwhile his bowling has developed a lovely loop and greater accuracy, twelve wickets at 24 runs each telling no lie as to his ability.

He has that number five spot nailed, by the look of it. We are very lucky to have such depth in all round talent in the squad, but credit to Dave Houghton and the coaching staff for identifying and improving them so well,

As well as providing an environment in which they can thrive.

  1. Wow just wow. If my maths serve me correctly even allowing for Somerset's result, if the Bob Willis trophy rounds finished today and in any case we are 4/5ths of the way through it then little old Derbyshire would play Essex in the final. With a score to settle from last year's blast semi final defeat who would forecast that result!

This team simply does not know when it is beat. When you think oops we are in the mire a player sticks his hand up and digs us out of it. The more pleasing is that player is different every time.
With a v young attack we have held our own and the batting has excelled. Perhaps we could have had a contrived finish yesterday with Durham declaring leaving us to chase 338 which we did.

I like you peakfan always look on the positive and it's currently not hard to.

We have gone from staring down the barrel of 350 odd reqd in a day and an HR v Notts to second in the 18 strong pile and are firmly in the driving seat come the final round of games.

In terms of the upcoming T20 I didn't much fancy us or your team but you know what Alex Hughes will probably get a 10for and we will do ok

  2. One of the things that has impressed me in the four games we've played is our top order. The stats show just how well they have done their job. If someone has failed, someone else has delivered.

    Reece 206 at 51
    Godleman 216 at 36
    Madsen 200 at 40
    du Plooy 262 at 52
    Critchley 213 at 53

I agree about Critchley. He's looking like a genuine all rounder and capable of getting runs.

  3. Critchley was a great re signing. In the past we would have lost him to a another county so well done to all who managed to keep him (and him for wanting to stay!)

  4. It would have helped if Somerset hadn't won today, but there really is a chance for us to qualify for the final. You wouldn't normally count Lancashire as an easy fixture, but they've been pretty fragile this year and their bowling is threadbare, as long as England don't suddenly decide to release Mahmood and Parkinson, Onions makes a sudden recovery, and Anderson decides he fancies a little run out in Liverpool. We're helped by the fact that all of the possible qualifiers from other groups are playing each other - Somerset v Worcs and Essex v Middlesex. Neither Essex or Somerset have done well with batting bonus points either, so a win against Lancashire should get us the final. Whatever happens though, there's no question we've punched well above our weight and exceeded any expectations.

Aitcheson's injury is a blow, as he's been comfortably the best and most consistent of the young bowlers, and the only one who you'd have felt reasonably confident about in T20's. Mckiernan bowled well in his only white ball outing and he showed nerve in the match against Notts but we're short of a bowler for the closing overs. Hudson-Prentice did OK last year, but there's no-one else in the team above that I can see bowling at the other end at the death. Either would be a big gamble but Melton bowled beautifully against Leics in a containing role (and has a fabulous throwing arm) whilst Cohen's pace would cause problems. I'd be inclined to choose one or other instead of Wood, as I don't think the extra batsman is going to add much given the depth of the batting already. It's a problem, but worth bearing in mind that many other counties will have the same problem in the absence of overseas and England squad players, many of whom are power play and death specialists.

    1. I think for myself I would look at playing Tom Wood at 5/ 6. As said previous post the guy deserve a proper chance

I think we have to accept that we can't replace Rampaul 23 wickets was a huge factor why the team got to finals day. Cork is fantastic coach and am sure he has been planning for August and September and wont leave any stone unturned. If I was him looking at Derbyshire squad and player available I think our wild card could be Mattie McKiernan. Still pretty unknown and if him and Critchley could form partnership in midway of innings we could keep score down. I also think Critchley batting is different level to last year and expect him to score more this year.

  5. Durham coach James Franklin "They have a great top three which is comparable to any top three in the country"

  6. I have a sneaking feeling that Jimmy Anderson will fancy playing against us Liverpool, having played 5 matches of cricket this season (albeit test matches) and if he didn't tour this winter his next match would be mid summer next year. There is 10 days rest before the Lancs match and I think with his attitude and determination he would want to keep his fitness and stay in the groove and turn out for Lancs. he is only one bowler, and as said earlier hopefully England release any of their ODI or 20/20 squad. What better challenge for these young Derbyshire players to play against Englands best bowler, they have proved they are up to whatever has been thrown at them so far this season, and I am sure can do it one more time in the BWT. I think I saw that Parkinson had been released by England due to injury, and the dangerous Liam Livingston is a reserve for the upcoming 20/20 games so may be they will be unavailable as well so here is hoping.
