I read today that Kent have been paying Martin van Jaarsveld more than an England player gets from a central contract.
I find it astonishing, even though he has been the backbone of their batting for the last few seasons.
No wonder they are in such a parlous state.
Yet still people moan that we didn't pay Graham Wagg what he wanted. Van Jaarsveld has won Kent very little in his time there, and he is a better player than Wagg (check the averages if you don't believe me.)
For all he was a top bloke and a good cricketer, we have to move on and bring in affordable replacements with the money. There are a few out there.
After my first disappointment at losing Wagg I am coming round to thinking that John Morris has done a decent bit of business here! In John Clare we have someone who can step into Wagg's shoes as first class stats prove;
ReplyDeleteBatting - Clare 24.26, Wagg 24.38 Bowling - Clare 29.05, Wagg 32.52
We have also got in Mark Turner a decent bowler who wants to play for us who no doubt has been a cheaper option than Wagg.

Wagg is overated, his figures dont warrent a 90k wage. i wish supporters would stop moaning. 1-32 is hardly great.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere that keeping Wagg on 'silly' money might upset the dressing room. This is a fair point. As Wagg, Lungley and Hunter have sat out this season others like Groenewald, Jones and Smith have been bowled into the ground. If their reward for this was to watch a huge contract being awarded to Wagg whilst they stayed on the same contract then they would quite rightly wonder what is going on.

wagg was on 65k at derbyshire, dont think folks can say he was underpaid.
ReplyDeleteCANT believe wocestershire have gone up especially when half of the players went last season. still cant work-out how they managed it. i think they are the west brom of cricket.
