The batting is capable of scoring 200, but they have to, because the bowling isn't especially strong. It is hard to criticise Aitchison, who hasn't missed a game this season and must be tired, but his lines and lengths were off last night, as they were against Yorkshire. He is an outstanding red ball bowler but not yet the real deal in the white ball game.
The same goes for Andersson. The six wickets against Leicestershire seem a distant memory and the combined five overs for 84 runs were the issue last night. But it can happen at T20, to anyone and McDermott, who has struggled to buy a run, and Shadab put the game out of Derbyshire's reach with powerful, clean hitting, albeit aided by too many balls that were there to be hit.
Montgomery returned excellent figures, while Potts had a fine all round game and continues to develop. The two overseas did OK, with Atif's final over, chock full of fast yorkers, a stand out. Why it has taken until now to show these is a moot point.
The batting? Basically it confirmed my assertion of two days ago that we don't chase well and contained several echoes of Clive Dunn's Corporal Jones character in Dad's Army, running around shouting 'DON'T PANIC!'
Did Madsen need to step away and play the shot at the end of the power play that turned a good one into something average? Did Montgomery need to go for six and hole out on the boundary edge with men back, when we were ahead of the rate and he had just come in? Did Donald, after a sparkling innings, need to go big once again, having done all the hard work and got it down to 79 off nine? Meanwhile, my frustration with Basra continues. He is clearly a fine player but appears only to have an 'on' or 'off' switch with nothing in between. 71 needed off eight overs, when he too tried to repeat a shot he had just played and also holed out. It only needed common sense from there and it appeared to have left town..
Perhaps rather than getting involved in range-hitting golf simulations, the players might benefit more from watching videos of how Dean Jones, Peter Kirsten and Mohammad Azharuddin chased down totals. A boundary an over, work the spaces in the field, run hard, limit the dot balls. In the modern game, with modern bats, you *should* make a run chase of single digits per over. Sadly, the Derbyshire mantra appears to be 'six or bust' and too often for taste it isn't six...
There will be assertions that 'we can still qualify' but supporters know these are empty promises. We don't bowl well as a unit and we don't chase totals. Opponents will play on this - I know I would - and four wins from four against Durham, Lancashire, Leicestershire and Somerset (reigning champions, no less..) isn't going to happen.
Once again, Derbyshire illustrated that there is talent a-plenty within the ranks, but until we play better AS A TEAM and manage game situations better, they won't be making space in the trophy cabinet anytime soon.
Watching the live stream last night not sure whether it was the quality of the live stream but the lighting looked terrible
ReplyDeleteYes I noticed that it looked very dark towards the end

Andersson and Aitchison bowled five overs between them for 84 runs, truly pathetic, and our bowling has been our achilles heel throughout the whole tournament. We seemed to be able to clear 200 runs now yet it still isn't enough because of our shoddy bowling attack. Utterly pointless getting this new overseas guy in for 4 matches, what's it going to prove?. Rory Haydon can count himself very unlucky not ro be playing, he can replace Aitchison or the new guy in the remaining two matches, and Came for Andersson please
ReplyDeleteDespite the result a very enjoyable game. We are losing games because we are throwing away wicket. Potts was our best pace bowler but bowled only 3 overs, Aitchison got a third over & was our worst pace bowler on the night. This team undoubtedly has talent, but needs more game awareness & cricket brains.
ReplyDeleteI hope we give Whiteley a contract for another year.
Yes the lights were not great, hopefully they get rep, aced in the winter

Despite our bowling attack reining in Lancashire towards the end of the innings, and a fantastic knock by Donald and runs from Whiteley, once again, we didn't have what it takes to get over the line.
ReplyDeleteAs with the game against Yorkshire at Chesterfield, we should have won.

We are probably one good bowler and one lower order bat from being very good. Chappell would have been the latter and Moore and Brown would have added competition too. Aitchison was a hero 10 days ago, but this isn't really his format. Donald seemed to run out of energy and maybe through a lack of cricket? Kris
ReplyDeleteIf anyone wants to read a article which sums up the mindset of English cricket particularly the test side but also most players attitude in all t20 cricket which ties in with Steve’s assessment of Derbyshire players boom or bust attitude in bat Jonathan liew in the guardian newspaper online is absolutely superb ( it is free to read)
ReplyDeleteTheir overseas players won them the game, ours.......didn't.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Sufyan is a decent bowler, but would Morley do much worse? Jewell could then play, probably replacing Basra. Wasting money on overseas, and denying valuable experience to players, such as Morley, is not a good look.
Another shout out to Nick Potts, splendid, again 👏
I think the club would be criticised if they did not have 2 overseas players, damned if you and damned if you do not.
DeleteNot playing Morley after he took wickets in the first few games is strange. Would suggest we should have gone for a bowler who could bat a bit, for the second/third overseas player. Martin
On last nights game, its difficult to win when only 3 of your batsmen get over 20.
It is disappointing to have a tie and a loss when 2 victories were possible, but I'm taking the philosophical view of just enjoying the weather, the excitement of 2 cracking games and safe in the knowledge that however likely a Derbyshire win looks I'll leave with what it's, but I've come to terms with that so it doesn't sting so much.
ReplyDeleteBring on Somerset.
Matt, Sawley.
Does anyone remember a few weeks ago Mickey Arthur said we were lucky to have two of the best spinners in the county championship. He obviously thinks Morley is so fantastic he won’t pick him in the championship or the t20
ReplyDeleteYou are so right on your observations as to how teams should chase down totals. We spent most of the Derbyshire innings saying exactly the same. 8 or 9 an over with wickets in hand should be easily doable. But it seems every team does the same, not just us. T20 now is more about the fastest 50’s, most sixes etc rather than about winning. With a different mindset this team could have achieved so much more this season in the competition and it’s so disappointing. Ian, Heanor
ReplyDeleteI think if Donald doesn't keep wicket and has a cushy number in the outfield, he gets a century last night. I think he only got out because he was physically flagging. Guest could have played instead of Basra, but hey ho, another year has been and gone, in T20. I've still enjoyed the games. Kris
ReplyDeleteI think Derbyshire should save their money and not bother with overseas players for the T20, but if they must, 2 bowlers doesn't work unless they are top class internationals which Derbyshire could never afford, who could still go the distance in this format. Derbyshire can't afford any top international batters either so, to me, its seems pointless having any as we have seen in most seasons, the overseas players are rarely any better than homegrown players.

It was nice to see a Derbyshire bowler finally plump for yorkers. 8-9 games too late but there you go. Grant from Telford.
