Gloucestershire v Derbyshire day four

Please put your comments here

Not seen it, but shouldn't we have won, after the excellent start from Jewell and Came?

I'd regard that as an opportunity missed, at this distance...

I stunning game of cricket. Both sets of player deserve nothing but praise. We were more fortunate in the end to get a draw and Gloucestershire deserve full credit for a brilliant declaration and great fight back . I thought before this match that van burren wasn’t really much of a cricket player. I’ve now changed my mind. Anyway you can’t complain after a match like that so can’t wait for the visit of Lancashire

  2. The openers put us in a great position but then wickets fell regularly and Nuj had to save us from defeat again.Great entertaunment though and fair play to Gloucestershire for the declaration.Fair result in the end.Topspinner

  3. This was a great game (if rather strange in some respects) but unfortunately you are right, Peakfan. Jewell and Came did so well before tea that we really should have won the game. The trouble is that making 300 plus in the fourth innings, even in favourable conditions, isn't as easy as our Test team made it look yesterday, because winning (as opposed to getting close) requires a good deal of mental strength. it's for that reason that I thought Leicestershire made a costly mistake earlier this season by delaying their declaration. And even though we played very well for much of the game, with several terrific individual performances, we showed a frailty at crucial moments that is all too familiar.

  4. After a relatively generous declaration and a marvellous opening stand that was a huge disappointment. Yet again our middle order folded like a pack of cards with for the second time in the match Guest, Andersson and Thomson contributing next to nothing. We are often told that whilst Guest cannot clear the ropes he’s good at keeping the scoreboard ticking along. We needed barely 4 an over with wickets in hand. It was made for him. As for Andersson he went into the t20 scoring like Bradman and came out of it more like Tufnell/Panesar. In the end we were hanging on for the draw points when the win was there for the taking. Still in a good position but do we have the bottle to achieve promotion ?

  5. Feel like we really missed Luis Reece, the lower middle order looked weak, hence collapsing twice.

  6. After the start we had we should have won. That could cost us big time. Grant from Telford

  7. It was indeed a great match. We can rue the failure to win having failed to ram home a battng advantage in both innings due to collapses which both amounted to 8 wickets for about 90, but Came had a terrific match, Morley bowled superbly when conditions were at their most helpful , and Gloucs nust take credit for their resilience. We're far from the finished article in red ball, and we may not have enough to gain promotion this year, but at least we've moned forward. (Unlike in white ball, unfortunately).

The first wicket stand certainly set us up, but as Martin has mentioned above, it isn't easy and the bowling team will always start as favourite in any chase of 250+, and we werent helped by seemingly effectively being a batter short, with Lloyd only coming in at the end to help to save the match. In the end it was great character (again) to save a match we could easily have lost.
Finally a quick word of congratulation to Caleb Jewell for being the first to pass 1000 all format runs for the season.

  9. Too scared to lose. We bottled it. It should have been a canter

  10. To not win, from the position we were in at tea, was very disappointing. It's probably why we will not achieve promotion.

Andersson seems to have lost a little confidence, very nervous innings from him today. Messing him about in the batting order in the T20 might not have helped. Looks a little out of rhythm. As mentioned, it was set up for someone like Guest to see us home with sensible cricket, but we generally looked nervy. Bottled it.

  11. Full credit to Gloucestershire for the decoration that looked very generous at tea. The team is in amazing position going into round 9. My thoughts are we need Tickner and Reece fit. I would be tempted to open Jewell and Came then bat Donald at 5 for Lloyd. The batting looks fragile from 5 onwards that would be my concern going into Lancashire fixture.

  12. Yes, it was an entertaining game and finish - but, oh, how did we not win this game after such a brilliant stand between Jewell and Came? After tea, we collapsed - yet again. And we shut up shop too early. A win was a real possibility, and we bottled it.

  13. Difficult to take a non partizan view but that was a great advert for the 4 day game. Gloucestershire made a great recovery and that declaration kept the game alive.
Unfortunately it was yet another batting collapse after a fine start.
Let's take the positives. Harry Came is back at his best.
Please Mickey, let him stay opening the batting. Jack Morley did really well in the first innings. The skipper knocked up another ton and Caleb is still amongst the runs.
8 games in and still no defeats and still 2nd in the table. We would have taken that at the start of April.
