Derbyshire were all out for 214, with Basra making 93. Majid took five wickets and Cameron Steel three, before Surrey made 268 in their second innings. Sykes top scored with 58, while Majid made 47.
Mitch Wagstaff followed his own first innings of 58 with the excellent figures of 5-87. Will Tarrant took 2-20, with the home side leaving Derbyshire 238 to win in two days.
By the close they were 42-0, with Tarrant on 24 and Wagstaff 18.
Good days for those two lads and a fine finish set for tomorrow!
Logically, Wagstaff should get a game at Chesterfield against Lancashire if David Lloyd is injured.
I hope so, the lad deserves it.
Wagstaff should get a game against Lancashire ahead of Lloyd whether or not he's injured.
ReplyDeleteJust be typical wouldn't it.
ReplyDelete'There you go Mitch, finally we will give you a chance. They've only got some chap called Jimmy Anderson, steaming in with the new ball at Queen's Park. Good luck fella'.
I'm sure he would relish the challenge, but if Reece and Tickner are fit, then he might not get the opportunity, again.
I must admit Jasper that as I wrote that comment I did think that Chesterfield and Jimmy might not be the fairest way of throwing Mitch into the den.
ReplyDeleteHistory repeating itself..he was selected at the same ground last year, asked to open on a pitch the same colour as the outfield and unsurprisingly didn't do much. Not fair to the lad at all
ReplyDeleteI was unable to get to New Malden yesterday. However, it was interesting to note at some point in the afternoon both Derbyshire openers were sharing the bowling duties. In my experience I can’t recall that situation happening before in red ball cricket. I’m sure it happens fairly frequently during a season. Incidentally for those of you patiently waiting for the EFL fixtures coming out in the next hour or so, the New Malden ground is next door to AFC Wimbledon’s training ground. Didn’t seem to be much activity on Tuesday. Perhaps they are still on the beach! David
ReplyDeleteIf wagstaffe doesn’t get picked for the Lancashire match after that performance he never will get a game. I personally think Chappell could do with a rest game too with presumably ticknor coming back into the team. I suppose the look of the wicket dictates if we play 2 front line spinners again but you would have thought Morley and wagstaffe to do the spin duties with a extra seamer might be the best bet
