Lancashire 367 (Green 121, Jennings 106, Chappell 4-73)
v Derbyshire
They did so thanks to contrasting centuries by Keaton Jennings (who I think criminally overlooked by England in recent years) and by Chris Green, who made his maiden first class century and a very fine one indeed.
The score ticked over quickly in the afternoon, as it always does at Chesterfield when the outfield is dry. The boundaries are short and a brisk scoring rate is commonplace. I didn't think Derbyshire bowled badly, but the centurions turned the tide in the afternoon and evening sessions.
It will be Derbyshire's turn to bat tomorrow and no doubt Jimmy Anderson with the new ball will be a test.
We will see how Derbyshire handle that in due course. But Tickner and Aitchison bowled admirably in the morning and Chappell chipped away throughout the day.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable day of cricket. We will see tomorrow if Derbyshire can keep their promotion challenge on course.
The dropping of Green on very few will likely prove crucial come the final reckoning. It wasn't a 7 down for 150 pitch in reality but it should have been that and we should have been in a position to make inroads into a 250ish max score come the close. Still, a good day if proper cricket.
ReplyDeleteSuch a disappointing end to the day as at 132-6 we should've finished Lancs off but yet again an overseas player punishes us and any hope of a victory looks gone already.

DeleteNot one other county has been bowled out on day one other than Lancashire. I would love to know the thinking behind the ball experiment when you consider there are few if any England players playing that will be making the trip to the Ashes

Yes, they would have been 152-7. Green was on 8 or 9 at the time. At the time it felt like a key moment, and I think it will prove very costly.

ReplyDeleteThe score seemed a false reflection of the mornings play. Wasn't impressed with Tickner, thought Atchison was much the best of our bowlers. Looks a decent track but we will see what Jimmy manages tomorrow.
It's all about opinions, but I thought Tickner bowled excellently in the morning. He ended with figures not dissimilar to Aitchison. He also had Green dropped.
DeleteI agree, Jasper and thought Blair and Ben excellent in the first ten overs with hardly a bad ball. Then it went soft and batting became easier. It has been hard work around the country today - a glance at the scores confirms that!

ReplyDeleteI was at Chesterfield today. As has been said, there was a good enthusiastic crowd and a great atmosphere. But we certainly lost our way from mid afternoon onwards. After the obdurate Jennings had been dismissed we should have made more effort to run through the tail. But it was not to be. Our bowling suddenly looked below par after earlier troubling the Lancs batting continually. On the brighter side our catching by the slips and wicket keeper were excellent . What a pity that a comparatively simple catch at point was put down. That error cost us over a hundred runs as it was Green who was the recipient of our largesse and went on to make 121. He looks a fine player. We will need to bat exceptionally well to get anything out of this match I feel.

Very good performance by Chappell who however tired he looks never seems to give up.A good pre lunch session is fairly vital in the morning otherwise we could be clinging on for a draw. Looking at most of the other scores again today this ridiculous experiment with the kookaburra ball should end after this round of matches if the ECB really does care about anyone who watches the county championship
ReplyDeleteFor me they have 70-100 too many for us to feel its honours even. Certainly batting got easier as the pitch dried out and ball goy older. The first 15-20 overs tomorrow will be key to see what may be possible for us.

Agreed Nick. The new ball is key but the old one does little with these Kookaburras. If we can get through that tomorrow, we can score 350 ourselves and then see how the game moves forward.
DeleteMy gut feeling is that Lancashire's total is above par. The shots played in the late dismissals gave me the impression they were happy to be bowling as soon as possible rather than seeking another batting point in the morning.

I too felt disappointed at the end of the day. Lancs score will take some reaching, I think. A couple of our batters will have to play very well. Crikey, we miss Luis.
ReplyDeleteI felt Derbyshire bowled a lot of bad balls - lots of legside stuff, possibly because of the left handers in Lancs line-up, but this is top level sport and if I was Derbyshire's bowling coach I wouldn't be happy. That said, AitchIson bowled some beauties.
Great to actually be at the game in person today today, the Park was at its best and for the umpteenth time you have to ask why it gets so little cricket. I know that Derby has been improved enormously at some cost but the Park is very special. I thought our bowlers made the most of the early conditions, and the morning sesh was excellent. Full marks to Guest, and good luck to Mitch Wagstaff tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a very good score from Lancashire. Our senior batsmen will have to be in good nick today, especially in the pre lunch session. Survive that and we still have a chance.
