Glamorgan 336-6 (Ingram 80*, Northeast 63, Tribe 58, Reece 2-33, Dal 2-41)
v Derbyshire
And there wasn't a great deal, for seam and spin alike.
The home side made good use of the pitch, almost everyone getting going, but a couple of them giving it away with unnecessary hook strokes. Were it not for such acts of profligacy, we could have been really struggling tonight. Tribe, off the back of a double century for the second team, did well for them in the morning session, playing some nice strokes.
As things stand, Glamorgan may yet make 500 in the first innings, with Colin Ingram, dropped twice, still there to add more tomorrow. I must have written 'Ingram makes Derbyshire toil' a few times over the years, since he was a successful professional locally..
The bowling was okay, but we could have done without Luis Reece pulling up for the second consecutive game and probably unable to bowl again in the match. His two wickets before lunch brought Derbyshire back into it, while two from Dal later on gave a semblance of parity to the day.
The good thing is there was no sign of any spin and when their turn comes, Derbyshire should have every opportunity to score heavily themselves. With genuine all-rounders down to number ten, maybe the rationale is that we can go for a last afternoon run chase, if something realistic is set.
We will see. Long ago I realised you never comment on a game, until both sides have had an opportunity to bat.
Tomorrow is another day..
5 championship games so far and the side that won the toss has bowled first on each occasion.
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. It goes against established wisdom.
The wicket did look quite green so I suppose fairly easy to see why we put them in. I thought it ended up honours even really with all of our bowlers keeping a lid on things. Thomson bowled pretty well without much help from the pitch. It should be a interesting match
ReplyDeleteI’ve never seen a bowling attack look as weary as Derbyshire today. 5th consecutive Champo after 210 overs in the field v Middx, the boys were absolutely out on their feet.
ReplyDeleteOnce again we throw away the advantage of winning the toss by not batting first. I might be old fashioned but I believe that if you win the toss you bat, unless there are exceptional circumstances, which clearly wasn't the case here. No doubt Ingram will make us pay and dropping him twice obviously didn't help.
ReplyDeleteIf you put a team in, you should be looking to bowl them out for under 250. They will be the happier. Another hybrid pitch 🤔. I'm expecting a draw.
ReplyDeleteThis attack will struggle to bowl teams out they didn't last season and they won't this. We've made a good start this season and the batting looks good but although all the bowlers chip in with wickets we don't have people who can take 5 fors consistently and I think that will hold us back.A draw is the best we can hope for from this one.Topspinner
ReplyDeleteIf the pitch is doing less than you'd hoped it's essential that your opening bowlers maintain accuracy plus what a London friend and former first-class cricketer admiringly used to call "that nagging Derbyshire length." The first hour was the very opposite. Tickner and Reece lacked control and, as Peakfan says, Derbyshire were fortunate to pick up wickets before lunch. Tickner looks fortunate to have been retained as our overseas bowler. Plenty more long days in the field to come this season?
ReplyDeleteMy heart sank when I saw that Derbyshire had won the toss and not chosen to bat first. We battled, and batted, so well against an excellent Middlesex attack that we were able to control the game. I hoped that , given the opportunity, we would do so again against Glamorgan. Our bowling is not our strong suit. Only Chappell looks threatening on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly it's better than last season already but we're still going to struggle to win matches. Our bowling attack looks a bit impotent to me, nobody in that team is a consistent wicket taker and there in lies a problem. We're really going to struggle bowling teams out twice as it stands, none of Chappell, Tickner, Dal, Thomson, Morley and Brown are going to get enough wickets simple as that. Tickner was a disappointing overseas signing, hope he proves me wrong though
ReplyDeleteA tough day in the field. As you say Steve we have yet to bat. The lowest first innings score Glamorgan have conceded so far this season is 427 so there is scope for a fourth innings chase if we can bowl them out relatively quickly and bat well. Here's hoping....
