Gloucestershire v Derbyshire day 4

It was good to see Zak Chappell bowling with the rhythm to which we have become accustomed over the last two days.

I mentioned last night that he seemed to be back to his best and today he took 5-58 in 19 overs, which in the context of a total of 530 is very good going. The home side managed to take a small lead on first innings by lunch time, which rather rendered the rest of proceedings academic.

There were runs in the afternoon for David Lloyd and for Brooke Guest, but the game clearly illustrated what I referred to in my post yesterday, when there is no real interest in the final day. How can there be, when two innings haven't been concluded by the end of the third day?

I thought van Buuren looked the class act he is for Gloucestershire, while Beau Webster looked to be the perfect overseas player - a good seam bowler who can hit the ball hard and contribute good runs. Looking at his career, he averages 36 with the bat and just under 40 with the ball. What's not to like about a genuine all-rounder like that?

I switched over to the stream from the County Ground and what turned out to be a very good T20 game between Derbyshire and Lancashire Second Elevens.

The visitors won by scrambling a single from the last ball of the game. Batting first, Derbyshire didn't manage enough runs, only reaching 152-6. Former England under-19 wicket keeper Jack Carney top scored with an unbeaten 36 and there were nice twenties from Bin Naeem and Whiteley, while Moore and Tickner hit well towards the end.

It didn't look close to enough against a Lancashire side including Luke Wood, Steven Croft and Jack Blatherwick, but Samit Patel shuffled his bowlers well. I was especially impressed by Nick Potts, who took three wickets and bowled with good pace.

A no ball in the final over was costly, costing four runs and a free hit, but he bowled well and with good rhythm. So too did Tickner and Pat Brown and they came close to defending a low total, but half centuries from George Lavelle and Cian Dickinson saw Lancashire home by five wickets.

  1. Positives Peakfan. No sign of a batting collapse. Even the bowling averages are improving..
Two wins and we'll be challenging.
I feel I'm morphing into you with the optimism Steve!

  2. Well, some pluses from the Gloucestershire game: we scored around 450 on day one, Lamb hit 2007, Chappell took five, and Guest scored two fifties, making it five so far this season, and he's our leading run scorer.

I also dipped in and out of the second XI T20, and I thought we did well to peg Lancs back after we only mustered around 250. Potts was so close in that final over in grabbing victory.

I can honestly say I've never been as bored as I have the first couple of months of this season. It's been garbage hasn't it, Derbyshire haven't been close to winning a game, and the standard of Cricket has been so poor.
Roll on the T20 for something different where at least we'll get results positive or not

  4. Carl, Manchester. Could I ask, what is the link for the 2nd X1 livestream on 28 May 2024, there’s nothing on the no play app that opens up on YouTube?, cheers

    1. Hi Carl the next game I am aware of is on the 29th, against Leicestershire at Derby. It will be live streamed with a fixed camera at each end. Is that what you mean?

    2. Yes, thanks, I’m currently in hospital but I have WiFi access through my iPad, is there a link that I need to go through as I find that the nv play option doesn’t have a set up that shows ball by ball

    3. The game tomorrow will be streamed live on YouTube by the club. There will be a link put up by them tomorrow just before it starts and I will try and put it up here for you when it appears

NV play only does a scoreboard and video clips of boundaries and wickets

      Hope you get better soon!

  5. Much better performance from the team in this match.A lot of teams are struggling for wins as well as ourselves. We must keep faith in Mickey he is a renowned and respected coach and he will come good but we have to remain patient whatever the outcome of the one day competitions.Topspinner

  6. I've long been an opponent of the idea of cutting down the number of first class counties and the idea that the "smaller" counties might become white ball only irritated me immensely.

This season though I'm beginning to sympathise with those ideas, we look like a side that is targeting draws at best, I can't even remember any point where a win looked on the cards. Its tedious to watch and follow and has me wondering what the point of it is.

I'm also very sad to see how few homegrown players we field. Gloucestershire haven't done well in recent years but their commitment to their pathways has seen their side regularly containing half a dozen or more academy players and they're beginning to see results with the brothers Price and Charlesworth joining Bracey, Hammond, Dent, Payne and the Taylor brothers as productive first XI players and others like Middleton and Goodman in the wings. Wagstaff got a couple games last season and scored two useful 50s and then was banished from the side for the last 2 or 3 games when we had nothing to play for, that was criminal in my mind.

Hopefully we compete in the t20s and it cheers me up!

  7. Glad to see someone else supporting MA I'm ardent fan and have been since Day 1. As I've said before I do still criticise Mickey because that goes with the job. I've also said as far as I'm concerned he should stay till 2028. As Steve rightly pointed out its a results business, but I still haven't and won't change my mind. I come on here and have a moan just like others do, but if we hang in their with Mickey I'm utterly convinced by 2028 we'll be in Division 1.And who knows maybe a t20 or 50 over title. Now I'm still going moan as that's my right given the thousands of miles I travel over many years. But the bottom line is I still believe in MA and I won't flinch from that. Having played 3 different sports myself to a reasonably high level when I was younger football, Basketball, and Distance running I know for a FACT negativity simply DOESN'T WORK. Mickeys constant positiveity is the only one that will ultimately prevail. Now I hear all the time from people I know and don't know that this grates with a lot of people. In my opinion and this may sound arrogant but I'll take that chance but I've got an insight into this and patience is key I'm going to spare you all the details but ive proven time and time again to myself that if you hang in their good things happen.

    1. Thanks Steve, admire and appreciate the positivity. I have no issue seeing through the contract, but there will be questions asked if we don't at least make the quarterfinals in the T20 and produce a better showing in the 50 over competition.

I am not sure if a small Club with a small staff can multitask to challenge on all fronts. But the signs from the last two games, in both fighting for a draw and then improving with bat and ball have been positive. Maybe the season starts here, we can only hope so and a good result at Northampton would be a fine way to kick-start the campaign!

  8. Maybe Hamez it's not so much us targeting draws more like the current format leads to draws. Its all very one dimensional with very little scope for inventive thinking. That's why far from being a backward step the way forward is undoubtedly the 3 day game which won't be perfect.Given how modern players are brought up the potential excitement if organised correctly could save first class cricket.

  10. Well that was a run fest or bore fest depending on your point of view. While l was absolutely chuffed for Matty Lamb and hope he this kick starts his season it was ridiculous to still be playing out first innings on day four notwithstanding the weather interruption. These pitches don’t really help and we need a better balance between bat and ball so hats off to Zak Chappell for his five wicket haul on this flat track.

The other issue is the points system that gives little incentive to gamble on winning a match as PF has rightly commented on. How bizarre it is to find Leicestershire in third place despite not winning a game! In fact after seven matches there has only been a handful of victories and that’s hardly surprising in the circumstances. Maybe uncovered wickets is the answer LOL.

  11. Now your talking Nudger just ask G Boycott about uncovered pitches. Someone like deadly Deadly D Underwood sadly recently passed away, use to bowl out sides with 10 and a half deliveries. Not even G Boycotts mother or her famous stick of rhubarb would save you. I'm not sure NHS A & E would be so pleased through as their rather busy most of the time. Having said that it's amazing how even more players weren't injured pre helmets. My theory is this, it made you watch the ball twice as much knowing that if you didn't it meant paracetamol tables.Even worse a spell of being looked after by some dragon of a Matron.
