Nottinghamshire 152-6 (Patel 64*, Duckett 38, Van Beek 3-22, Scrimshaw 3-36)
Derbyshire 150-6 (du Plooy 58*, Reece 56, Patel 2-14)
Nottinghshire won by 2 runs
Twice Derbyshire had the game in their control. When Nottinghamshire were 45-4 and then when they were on only 87 with five overs left. Patel clubbed and top edged with gusto to raise a further 65 from that final five. Logan Van Beek bowled splendidly with the new ball for three wickets, as did George Scrimshaw, who troubled all the batsmen as a hostile first change.
Patel's 64 from just 32 balls was a game changer, but Luis Reece rivalled him with a stunning 56 from 26. At 82-2 in 7 overs we had overcome the early loss of Came and a first baller for Godleman, but the dismissal of Reece, caught on the boundary edge, saw a lessening of the scoring rate.
Critchley's early dismissal was a major blow and thereafter no one could give the excellent du Plooy the support he needed. He finished on an unbeaten 58 from just 35 balls, but needed something at the other end. Patel returned outstanding figures of 2-14 in three overs.
Without him, Derbyshire would have won this match.
With him, they should have. This was one that was given away, for me. Good effort, but no points and that goes down as a disappointment.
Well as we bowled, when 'pace off' bowlers did well on both sides, why Alex Thomson didn't bowl was a mystery.
Another puzzle..
Bowled well for the first 10 overs so I can see why Thomson didn’t get a bowl tonight. Let it get away from us with the death bowling and Patel playing well. Just missed a Madsen and Hughes in that middle order after Reece had gone which left us too much to do. Suspect that is really the end of any realistic hopes barring an amazing run even with so many games left
ReplyDeleteAs per usual there were more questions than answers from Derbyshire.
ReplyDeleteCaptain fantastic shining again, embarrassing. If only we had anyone to replace him, what a sad state of affairs
ReplyDeleteIncredibly disappointing that we couldn’t get over the finishing line, especially after having Notts on the ropes early on when they batted.
ReplyDeleteBut we weren’t outplayed. Reece and du Plooy continued their excellent form in the T20 with the bat, and van Beek and Scrimshaw both bowled well.
All credit to Samit Patel for a brilliant all round performance.
This has to go down as a heroic failure. Absence of Madden and Hughes crucial, as has been said already. BG's batting average now 4 after 6 innings. I know our injury list is approaching mammoth proportions but surely someone could replace him?
ReplyDeleteWhen you look at the results on the whole, the teams we have lost to are Lancashire(x2), Birmingham and Notts who have complelety different budget to us whilst the teams we have beaten Leicestershire and Northampton are similar counties.
ReplyDeleteAnd with a bit of luck (mainly with injuries) or some better decisions we could have won some of the games we have lost.
The captain's form is great concern as the longer it goes on the more damage it could do to his confidence for the remainder of season in all forms. How can he look a player in the eye and say "Sorry you haven't got enough runs. We have got to leave you out". Perhaps the obvious captain replacements in Madsen and Hughes being injured may be the reason he has not been left out.As you mentioned in other posts Reece or Critchley may be options, maybe du Plooy. Let's be honest with the lack of runs Dominic Cork could play and contribute more runs.
The has been some good news in that Leus Du Plooy has been back in form albeit the downside could mean that he may end up back with a "Hundred" contact as a "Wildcard" or as a "replacement" for a number of doubtful players. Also have been impressed with van Beek and Scrimshaw.
Just seen that Ed Pollock is out of contract at the end of this season, worth a try?
ReplyDeleteEd Pollock could definitely be worth a look, though we'd probably need to move on some of the bit part players we've accumulated and hope he was interested.
ReplyDeleteHe'd walk into our white ball sides and if he's interested in red ball cricket we could offer him that as well which Warks won't. Also wouldn't be a big move distance wise.
Not sure. On his day a destructive T20 player but his record isn't great. Having just signed Came, not sure where he would get a game. Not sure we can carry many one day specialists on our finances...
