Derbyshire lead by 353 runs
The chances are that if you live to a ripe old age you will not see a better performance than that of Matt Critchley in this game. 193 runs and five wickets (so far), made with a style and panache that would be hard to surpass.
Only Garnet Lee, in 1928, has scored a century and fifty, as well as taking five wickets in the same match. That was 93 years ago, against Leicestershire at Derby and whatever happens tomorrow, Matt can be immensely proud of his efforts.
He was only 16 runs short of a new world record (thanks to David Griffin for the stat) and his brilliance enabled Derbyshire to overcome the early loss of Billy Godleman, who retired with a groin injury.
I said before the season that it was a big year for him and his England ambitions. The evidence is becoming increasingly compelling with every game.
Derbyshire forged a lead of 353 by the close, although bowling out the visitors tomorrow on a wicket that isn't unduly awkward will be tough. Some cloud cover would be nice in the morning..
And Critch will no doubt be twirling fairly early in proceedings.
I can pay no greater tribute to his batting today than to say that Wayne Madsen played second fiddle for most of their partnership. He too played delightfully and Harvey Hosein worked it around before the close when Worcestershire had plenty on the boundary to slow the scoring, but it was Critchley's day.
As indeed it has been his match and season so far.
It was evident early in his first knock in Birmingham, but it's clear to me that Matt has taken his game up a level. Watching him bat this season there's little doubt in my mind he's competition for Moeen Ali in the England test team when they put the side together that way.

DeleteI was so disappointed that Matt didn't achieve his second century today.With Wayne at the wicket I really thought that he would maybe just nudge/nurdle his way to a low risk 3 figures.It wasn't to be but we must all be delighted with his early season form.
ReplyDeleteI always like to be positive but thought we finished 30/40 runs short at the close.Yes we faced defensive bowling/fields but with wickets in hand maybe someone had to chance their arm more.Its a team game after all.As I think you suspect yourself PF a final day 350 on this wicket may not prove stiff enough.
May have misread the game situation so feel free to correct me guys.

Hi Alison nice to hear from you! I agree and the way in which Madsen and Critchley batted made me think that 350 isn't ungettable if Worcs get a start.
DeleteThe bounce is getting lower and the odd ball misbehaves, but it needs to be in the right place and that is key for a young attack.
I would have been happier with 375, but we can't be too sad with our position!
And yes, the ground looks splendid!
Incredible performance by Matt Critchley, and I agree an England call-up could well be on the cards if he can sustain form. It would be interesting to know who he's been working with - in both disciplines- this winter.
ReplyDeleteRe the match there were a few signs of uneven bounce during the session I watched (the last) but it will be hard work. A good stint with the new ball is definitely needed, then good old - fashioned line & length. And a bit of Matt's Magic of course! I think they'll do it.
Well, he hasn't been anywhere with Covid, but the previous winter he worked with Stuart MacGill in Australia and may have had chats online over the winter. Mal Loye and Dave Houghton will have helped on the batting front and the signs were there last year, of course.

I agree with Tim, Matt Critchley has gone to another level. I sense the confidence - and freedom - is there. Geoff Miller took wickets regularly, and could bat well. Matt is showing he can do something similar. And, when it comes to batting, he might have more to offer than Geoff.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Matt has that something with the bat. He has to prove himself consistently with the ball, but between last year and this the signs are good!
