Embarrassing, but got over the line. We knew Andersson was good, the rest have done themselves no favours. Why was Potts bowling short, again? He got smacked in Scarborough and conceded 2 boundaries before coming back with a yorker - yes, a yorker, remember them - against Lancs in the T20. Mickey should take the blame, but a 24 year-old - yes, he is not a teenager - should know better. Even when I was a teenager, I knew better.
A decent win & 6th place finish in the group. Given the strength of team that we put out during the competition overall that is not a good return. The frustrating thing is we beat a good Hampshire team on their patch. I do not think it is a skills issue, I believe it to be more an issue to do with mental toughness when the pressure is on in key situations. Basically we have a tendency to not think clearly & to execute plans poorly. We all know about the Lancashire CC defeat, but in the 2 white ball competitions we lost more games than we won. Yet in both competitions we had a positive net run rate. The only way you can do this is by winning well but more often to be losing narrowly.
Very nearly the mother of all embarrassments. Words fail me. 17 sixes in 39 overs. The most effective bowler only given six overs. Yorkers needed, not bodyline. Batting a bit better but 118 dot balls - nearly 20 overs unused.
I can barely believe it. We won a close one when it looked like we wouldn't. I'll take that. A Derbyshire win at Southampton is a very rare thing. Maybe a smidgen of confidence is restored for the championship run in.
All this negative stuff has to stop. The Hundred counties are getting further and further away. People want Potts, Wagstaff and Hawkins to play and they did today. And we beat an IPL owned county! Kris
A win is a win so it’s a good morale booster to take into the next crucial championship games. Andersson has surpassed all expectations in all formats. I doffed my hat too today at the competitiveness of Ross Whiteley who really was the match winner with his fantastic fielding and his cameo innings that was the difference at the end. One more contract for him PLEASE Andy
Totally agree about Andersson, Andy. He has been a terrific acquisition, the best MA has made since Shan Masood in 2022. And he only stayed one season. Chapel Guy
Whiteley’s enthusiasm in the field is not in question but he doesn’t bowl and averaged 21 in this competition with a highest score of 33 . Does that really warrant a new contract ? Not for me. Rob
A woeful bowling performance against a side desperate to finish the game within 40 overs to enable them to qualify. This shouldn't, though, detract from some outstanding batting by Andersson and Came against a decent Hampshire attack including Kyle Abbott, the leading Div.1 wicket-taker this season.
First of all the batting was very good and we kept wickets in hand and at the end Whiteley and Reece were able to accelerate and we posted a very good score. The bowling also went reasonably well to start with and we had them at 191-8. after that the wheels nearly came off the wagon and we just about crawled over the line. Nick Potts has probably played a lot more cricket than he anticipated in this competition and he should have a few things to work on over the winter. If Pat Brown had been fit he would have got to bowl some of the death overs.
There is a caveat that Hampshire had to win in 39 overs to try and qualify ahead of Durham . So there was a game within a game and we just won it . I find the strategy for this competition a little muddled particularly the handling of Jewell and junior selection . It’s for the county to decide the way forward but I think having an honest review with Mickey is necessary albeit injuries haven’t helped the cause . As of mid August I can’t see us winning another red ball game with such a depleted bowling attack . Abbas , Moore, Chappell , Hayden would be a loss to any side never mind one like ours with such meagre resources. A big shout out to Andersson and Aitchison who have been excellent this season

DeleteJust read the interview with Andersson on the Derbyshire website. He’s far more level headed and honest then Arthur ever is.
