Madsen injury blow

Very sad news this morning for Wayne Madsen, whose World Cup campaign has ended almost before it began.

He injured his shoulder diving to try and stop the ball in the fourth over of Scotland's innings and it was subsequently confirmed as a dislocation.

He will be assessed in 24 hours, but unless he has superhuman powers of recovery, his tournament has ended. From a Derbyshire perspective, it may also be a challenge for him to be fit for the start of the county season.

Nye Donald missed two months of last season with a 'shoulder injury' that I never saw diagnosed or explained as a dislocation. Such injuries generally take between two and four months to heal, depending on the damage sustained and the individual rate of healing.

Wayne will be in very good hands, but I would be surprised were he fit for the start of the red ball summer.

Which of course will be announced when he has been examined by the club's own medical staff. It is too early for conjecture to take the place of the facts, but I am sure that, like me, you are all very disappointed that the crowning glory of his career has been cut short.

IF his recovery is to take longer, then it affords opportunity to someone else. Nye Donald, Amrit Basra and Mitch Wagstaff would compete for that position in the batting line up, which is why we have a squad, of course. As for the captaincy, Brooke Guest would be a sound option, but Mickey Arthur, in his interview last week, referred to Matt Montgomery as Wayne's eventual replacement as a 'batter and leader'.

For now, I can only wish Wayne the very best in his recovery.

  1. Gutted for Wayne, he must be feeling hugely disappointed to miss out on this opportunity to showcase his skills on the international stage.

He shouldn't miss too much of our season if it's a straight forward dislocation. I'd imagine Guest would fill in as skipper, unless they think Montgomery is ready to step up.

    1. The NHS website says 12-16 weeks, but I guess that's for you and me, Jasper, not a sportsman with physios and conditioning staff to work with daily. Even so, I would reckon mid/late April most likely for a return. Fingers crossed!

    2. I dislocated mine some years ago and took about 3 months to fully heal.

Like you say, he will have access to all the specialist treatment. Varying degrees of dislocation, though, so hopefully, his isn't too severe. 🙏

  2. Speedy recovery Wayne. I’m gutted that he didn’t have the chance to show the rest of the world what we in the hallowed county all and love about watching him bat.

  3. Get well soon Wayne. Such a shame you didn’t long that well deserve chance to showcase your talents on the world stage. Hopefully we get you backfiring on all cylinders soon.

  4. If Madsen is likely to be out for some time I'd like to see us move to ensure we have the right batting depth.

I'd perhaps offer Andy Umeed, who I think would succeed in D2, a short term deal to cover the first block of first class games. If he does well then he can be extended, if not Madsen should be back.

    1. But what sort of message would that send to Donald and Wagstaff? Some supporters would like to see Donald included, even with Madsen fit.

    2. I agree, Jasper. Umeed has a f/c average of 21, at 29. Donald, Wagstaff, Basra, Dal all better options. Not to mention Bin Naeem, who might kick on this year after injury issues

    3. Surely Came or Donald slot into that team Hamez ?

    4. Umeed was batting in D1.

      Clearly I'm wrong then.

    5. You have an opinion, Hamez, as we all do. The only one that matters is that of Mickey Arthur, when it comes down to it. But there's nothing wrong with talking points or opinions, expressed pleasantly

  5. Being a retired chartered physiotherapist and having worked with the Royal Marines and major sports teams, I have reduced several shoulder dislocations. In order to treat it conservatively though, it needs to be a simple anterior dislocation (subluxation). They are not all simple though and may require surgery. If that's the case, it could take 3-4 months of rehabilitation. We'll wait and see what transpires.

  6. Wayne quoted as saying he hopes to play later in the T20 World Cup. Whether he does or not it sounds like his injury isn't as bad as first thought. Great news 👍

    1. I have seen that too Simon and understand the dislocation was put back in OK. But such an injury has to weaken muscles and I expect Derbyshire will be worried about it happening again, if he played so soon.

    2. Fully agree Steve but I can understand the pull (no pun intended) for Wayne to participate in a World Cup.

    3. Oh yes, Simon, me too. Would need to hide himself in the field though and have a self-imposed 'no diving' rule!

    4. Maybe, after Italy’s performance against Nepal, Wayne reckons he has a bit more time to get ready, for their appearance in the final???
      Will

    5. Probably best for Derbyshire that he doesn't play in the tournament again and risk a recurrence. But after everything he's done for the county, it would be churlish to wish that on him. So I hope he does get to play again!

  7. Fair play to their physio, he's done a great job there. Not sure how quickly he did it, but I had to wait for a x- ray to be done (and lots of morphine!) before they popped mine back in.

I understand him being desperate to play, I would love to see it. Just hope if it happens, he doesn't do any more damage.
