Haydon signs on for three summers!

I am delighted that Derbyshire have at last concluded the signing of Rory Haydon, for the rest of 2025 and for the next three seasons.

I have been in no doubt all summer that this was a young man who had the potential to make it in first class cricket. He always seems to take wickets, especially with the new ball, while a feature of his play is that he seldom wastes it.

Rory, like Ben Aitchison, likes to make the batters play and often reaps the rewards. I will admit to a little concern, as I heard that at least one other county were very keen on his services, having seen him in action both for Staffordshire and ourselves.

Thankfully, Rory has shown that loyalty does still have a place in the modern game and it is excellent news that we will be able to see his development over the next three summers.

There are not too many young seam bowlers of his potential on the market and I'm sure everyone is equally happy that he will be in Derbyshire colours for the foreseeable future.

It could be that he makes his red ball debut at Lord's, which would be pretty memorable.

Welcome (back) to Derbyshire, Rory!

  1. This is great news. I did start to worry after Basra signed but nothing was forthcoming for Haydon. It doesn't surprise another team was sniffing around, he really doesn't look like he could be a very good new ball bowler.

    1. I think I will clarify you mean 'does' there, Adam!

    2. I blame the autocorrect on my phone and a general lack of paying attention from myself…but yes “does” would be correct 😂

  2. Great news. He gets the basics right, challenging line and length and he can move the ball. Economical too. Really chuffed about this, I think he could go a long way in the game. Just Hawkins to sign now. Grant from Telford

  3. I think it was telling that Haydon's economy in the One Day Cup was so impressive. Bodes well for his red ball potential.

    Great result.

  4. A very good signing. Bowling a steady 75 to 80 with a good consistent line and length will always get wickets in English conditions ( except maybe with a kookaburra ball)express pace is great but that is almost a thing of the past in county cricket because those bowlers are signed for franchise cricket or permanently injured or resting. Look at Leicestershires attack almost all old fashioned seam bowlers put pressure on with plenty of maidens and it works

  5. Great news, he does look a prospect, but peakfan, surely with 3 games to go in the CC, MA should have made one big push for promotion and brought in a top class, overseas bowler to get wickets... PJS

    1. It depends who was available. If there was no one of the requisite standard, they are better going with what they have. I don't see any point in bringing in an overseas who is little better than what is already on the staff. We have seen enough of them in recent seasons...

    2. I accept what you are saying about the 'requisite standard', Peakfan. I just thought that MA and his famous 'contact book' might have come up with someone for 3 games/ one month in a big push for promotion since, as you know, we have struggled to bowl teams out. Anyway ... PJS

  6. Great news. Surprised at 3 years, Aitchison got 2 & Potts 1. A reflection of the potential the6 see in Haydon or to see off competition? I too am disappointed that our international HOC hasn’t been able to attract an overseas bowler for the run in. I agree fully they would need to improve the team, but isn’t this what he should be good at?

  7. His famous contact book only seems to have the details in for very average overseas bowlers

  8. Excellent news. The one positive aspect to come out of yet another disappointing season is the emergence of genuine talent from the pathway. This is the fruition of a number of years' hard work by Darren Smit and his team - great job by them.

    1. Is it really the Pathway though? Basra came from Northants 2s and Haydon from Staffordshire. More worryingly, they have overtaken genuine Pathway products such as Bin Naeem (and maybe Wagstaff?) and Potts respectively. What does that say about our coaching?

Also I agree with other comments that I don't see the point of Mickey Arthur if he doesn't use his contact book and give us an overseas for 3 games (so no significant outlay) when we have a genuine chance (on paper at least) of promotion. What's the point in turning over a (modest) profit most years but being rubbish? (Though I recognise the gallows humour that many from his 'contact book' have not done the business!)

    2. You're quite right, this is nothing to do with the pathway. However, there is genuine talent emerging there. Getting injured prior to the one competition where he was likely to play most, if not all, the games was not what Wagstaff needed. Very unlucky, and I do worry for him..

I don't think it's gallows humour to point out that MA has hardly signed any outstanding overseas bowlers for red ball cricket during his time here, so to sign one for 3 games would seem unlikely!

  9. Really delighted about this he looks a terrific prospect. Excited to see what he can do in red ball cricket. What are your thoughts on Donald and Came? They are both out of contract as it stands I would personally like to see both stay.

    1. Hi Elliott. Nye signed a 2-year deal in February of this year, which covers next season, of course. I don't think it will be too long before we hear that. Harry has signed an extension too. I see him as our opener with Caleb next year

  10. Like other commenters I am very glad to hear this news fearing that we might lose him to another First Class County. I was mightily impressed with how he outbowled his more senior teammates on debut at Cheltenham last month and he hasn't looked remotely out of place in our first team subsequently. Cheering news!

  11. Excellent news re Haydon. As everyone has said there's a lot of potential there, let's just hope he pushes on now that he's been contracted. Ref an overseas bowler for the last 3 games, it probably needs to be taken into account that playing at this time of year the weather is likely to have a large say in results. We could have spent a large amount of cash just to have him sat in the pavilion watching the rain come down!

  12. Brilliant news. Looks a great prospect and far superior to the senior bowlers in the one day cup.

Not sure if it's been mentioned anywhere Steve, but disappointing to hear that Caleb has been called back to Australia after the Middlesex game. Is that him gone for the remainder of the season then?

    1. All the Aussies have to go back as part of a new statutory ruling that they have to be back for the start of their summer. So it isn't just Caleb, CB
