It has to be said Leicestershire look a class above us. Ahmed bowled beautifully ( helped by some rash shots). But batting bowling and in the field the gap between the teams has looked huge. I think after this game at least 2 or 3 changes need to be made to freshen up the season.
Well after yesterday’s boredom today was the polar opposite. Great bowling by Reece in the morning but crikey what a diabolical batting performance that was by us. Yes Ahmed bowled well but we made him look like Warne with some absolutely reckless shots with Came and Chappell taking gold and silver and Thomson making the podium with a run out where I think I could have run faster and I’m 64! Really poor from Derbyshire and extremely disappointing Paul
I hope this isn't the day which cooks our promotion hopes. If we lose this game we'll be out of the top two. Well done to Recce but extremely poor batting
Forget promotion much more likely the wooden spoon if this rubbish continues. How Lloyd keeps getting picked is beyond me and yet another collapse after Came got out.Who'd be a Derbyshire supporter!!Topspinner
I know the fashion is to not enforce the follow on and Leicester dont need the win. The good old days it would have been nailed on to put us back in. Unfortunately they wont but nor will they declare leaving us any chance of a miracle. Day 2 was peak excitement for this game i am afraid. Season getting worse by the day! John Flint
We don't appear to be playing with the intensity that a top of the table clash would normally bring. No real words for the hapless Lloyd who finds the most bewildering ways to get himself out time after time.
Can’t see us getting out of this and Glamorgan look like they will win . If Tickner is done after this ,then the squad needs to be boosted by a loanee.for the final 4 games , ideally a strike bowler .
Strange game. 360 of the Leicestershire runs were scored in 2 partnerships and likewise 160 of the Derbyshire runs came in 2 partnerships. Otherwise 67 for 16. We are right back to where we were last season and MA has another year at least. GRIM!
Watching the Derbyshire inninings today batting against Rehan Ahmed I was getting flashbacks today to the 1980s when everytime England used to play Pakistan and had to face the leg spin of Abdul Qadir.
I like David Lloyd but boy does he need a score in the 2nd Innings. I think if he gets one big score he will go on a run of form but I can't help feeling what Mitch Wagstaff must be thinking to get a chance as well as players from previous seasons such as Tom Wood and Mattie McKiernan (who scored a FC century and barely played red ball cricket again) for such a run of regular games.
During the Lancashire game at Queen's Park, I was chewing the cud with a fellow supporter, bemoaning our poor T20 campaign. When discussion turned to the championship, we were in broad agreement that we would end the season about 5th in the table. Suffice to say, I haven't changed my opinion.
Today, Ahmed bowled well. The pitch offered some assistance (we've decided to play on a used pitch 🤔 ), but Came and Donald were out to the sort of filth I'm likely to be facing on Saturday. Has to be said, Wayne's shot, just before tea, was poor.
Yes, playing on a used pitch puts a lot of emphasis on winning the toss and batting. When you don't do that, chances are you are going to struggle. Looks like this one will be over today and quite likely our promotion chances along with it...
Nice to see Mattie McKiernan's mame popping up a lot these days. For those interested he's playing for Leigh in the Livepool Competition. He had a good match a couple of weekends ago at Birkenhead Park
Noticed Mattie McKiernan's name mentioned a few times recently. He's playing over here in the Liverpool Competition fir Leigh. Hit 122 against Wallasey this last weekend. As you all know, this area is football obsessed, but this is a decent level of cricket. We could do far worse than bringing him back!
I don't think he would come, Dave! He retired to take up a coaching role within the Liverpool competition, I think, so seems to have his future mapped out
Showing signs of promise and determination for quarter of a season are not enough, even starting from our low base point. Instead of pushing on we now appear to have imploded following the disastrous T20 campaign as I suspected may happen. They say It’s the hope that kills you. Ian from Heanor.
I think sadly since Leicestershire game at Grace road the wheels have been slowly coming off. The Blast has destroyed morale and confidence of this team. I can’t see change in fortune. I expect we lose match tomorrow with the form and confidence Ahmed has now. The supporters need to get behind the team as they need them more than ever. This is going to be tough 2 months ahead.
It was hard to bat on an increasingly used wicket, but even so, I thought we were too tentative. The run out was comical. Well done to Reece, who is still a class apart from our other bowlers and yet no new deal? Kris
I don't think it will be far away. Always struck me as a loyal lad to a county that gave him a start and, lets face it, after the season he has had there should be no debate on whether it is deserved...
Luis Reece has been Derbyshire’s best signing over the last ten years, prior to his injury which required surgery he was literally run into the ground opening the bowling and then going out and opening the batting I never understood why Lancashire released him , he and Wayne Madsen would be the only two of recent players who would get anywhere near getting in that very good Derbyshire side from the mid eighties through to the mid nineties, next year 2026 it will be 30 years since Derbyshire finished second in the county championship with a bit more luck and if Dean Jones had perhaps been a little braver Derbyshire would have won it
There is little I can add to the accurate and perceptive comments above. Two big questions are in my mind. Is David Lloyd the same player who scored a massive 312 against us just a few seasons ago? And how is it that on the first day of this match our spinners looked clueless and were carted all over the ground when yesterday Rehan Ahmed, coming on as 7th change bowler, ran through our batting like a knife through butter?
Just one more thing. I am happy to exempt the excellent Luis Reece from my statement yesterday about our feeble bowling. I have been an admirer of his all round qualities ever since seeing him take 7-20 a few seasons ago in an excellent display of swing bowling. It was a low scoring game which we would have won but for Hardus Viljoen spraying the ball all over the place from the other end while Reece was performing his heroics.
Unless we put in an incredible performance in the second innings (or it rains a lot), this game is gone. The question is what to do now. We should celebrate the deals given to Basra and Haydon. However, contracting young players is no use if they don't get a game (Wagstaff and Potts being cases in point). In my view the time has come for a big refresh for the next CC game, giving some players a break and time to get over the Blast. In any case, bold decisions are necessary to revive a flagging season and keep near the top of the CC.
It’s been a strange 2 days of cricket so far. There has been 3 big partnerships and basically nothing else. Leicestershire’s collapse was every bit as dramatic as ours. After picking 2 spinners, and although losing the toss and having to bowl first wasn’t ideal, the contribution from Thomson and Morley with the ball wasn’t good enough.
I am struggling to see what positives Derbyshire can take from the Mickey Arthur era. Few players have improved, many signings have disappointed, overseas players having little or no impact, fat contracts for ageing mercenaries, little opportunities for youth, sometimes bizarre decisions at the toss, odd selections, poor body language at times.
Have we hitched our wagon to the wrong choice of marquee coach and have now doubled down on that bad decision by giving him an extension.
Do we have anyone within the club willing or able to stand up to MA or are we stuck with his failing approach. The crowd has been sparse for top vs 2nd and how many will bother today to see us bowled out for under 200 later on today?
Can't imagine membership renewal for me for 2026 with how things stand at the moment.

As predicted we've made an absolute pigs ear of the batting. Typical Derbyshire!

ReplyDeleteSub optimal. Message ends

Boys looking flat. One wonders if the arse is about to fall out of our season. Morale seems very low, unsurprisingly really given the Blast campaign.
ReplyDeleteIf anyone still thinks Arthur is still the man for the job, they are delusional. Crazy decision to give him another season
ReplyDeleteMichael
Exactly Michael, he's been absolutely useless and we have another season of him

DeleteYes, in an important game, we have essentially gambled on winning the toss.

Much as foreseen yesterday. It was remarkable for two reasons: the Leicester innings with 3 centurions and no-one scoring more than 8 (must be a very rare occurrence), and a bowling masterclass from Luis Reece. If not, entirely forgettable with batters getting out to poor shots not to mention the run out. As others, I assume that the performance was due in a large part to the loss of confidence after the T20 débâcle.
ReplyDeleteUnless we put in an incredible performance in the second innings (or it rains a lot), this game is gone. The question is what to do now.
