Sussex v Derbyshire day 1

Derbyshire 339-5 (Madsen 171*, Reece 52, Masood 46, Dal 45*)

v Sussex

On a day when records tumbled and his good friend and team mate Shan Masood became the first man in the country to pass one thousand first-class runs, Wayne Madsen gave another example of his timeless brilliance, steering Derbyshire to an impressive 339-5 by the close.

The century took Madsen to  second place outright in the all-time county list of centuries scored, ahead of John Morris. It also, astonishingly, took him above Shan Masood in the averages, with 851 runs at 94 ahead of 1037 at 87.  Heady days indeed.

While he must have been close to being given out leg before in the morning session, thereafter he was in the most sublime of touches and the bowlers came alike to him. His unbeaten 171 is the highest score made by a Derbyshire player at Hove and he can take it further tomorrow.

Earlier Masood, although not at his very best, edged to third man to reach a thousand runs and was just getting into his stride when he was leg before to Steven Finn. Reaching the landmark in just 12 innings saw him do so in four innings less than the previous record, set by Peter Kirsten in 1980.

Billy Godleman again failed to get going, edging to slip, while Brooke Guest assayed a drive with too great a confidence in the prevailing conditions and played on. When Leus du Plooy left one from Tom Haines, we were 83-4 and in trouble, especially for a side that had opted to bat on winning the toss.

Luis Reece has endured a challenging summer, primarily after missing a lot of winter work with knee and shoulder surgery. He has never found his best batting groove, but here he mixed restraint with strong drives when the opportunity arose. His first fifty of the summer was deserved, but an assayed sweep off Rawlins saw a simple catch lob to the wicket keeper. The stand of 120 had overcome early jitters, however, the game now evenly balanced.

It swung Derbyshire's way with another big stand, this one unbroken and worth 136, between Madsen and Dal. While often lacking opportunity, Dal took his summer average to 76 with a tidy, professional innings, measured in approach and as always excellent in running with and for himself and his partner.

As the shadows lengthened on what always looks a lovely cricket ground, the Sussex bowlers seemed to be looking down a barrel. If we can push past 450 tomorrow - and there is batting to come to do so - then the home side will face a challenging task, Derbyshire having gone with the team that I suggested and two spinners for the final innings.

That's for the future and there's work to be done to get there, but with Middlesex being caned at Trent Bridge and Glamorgan in trouble against Worcestershire, a win here could see us move up to second in the table. Now there's an incentive!

Finally, it was nice to see the sportsmanship of the home side in acknowledging Madsen's batting. Especially so to see Mohammad Rizwan run in to shake his hand when he reached 150. The Pakistan captain is one of my favourite cricketers and seldom plays without a smile.

But hopefully we can do something about that over the next three days..

  1. Magnificent Madsen! Onwards to a double century and a total in the mid 400s hopefully.

  2. I am a fan so it pains me to say this but how much longer can we justify Billy? An average of 15ish and a top score of 38 is not good for an opening batsman. I know he is the captain and harder to drop but he's a walking wicket, Facet.

    1. I really feel for Bill as he has been a good servant. I was surprised when he was given a new deal so early this year, but MA must feel he can get his best game out of him. We must all hope so, because we know he can play.

  3. There aren't enough adjectives to describe the brilliance of Wayne Madsen, Derbyshire's best ever signing by a country mile. He simply is getting better with age and is our most important player, an injury to him and we would really feel it. Sheer class!

At the other end of the spectrum is Billy Godleman, a player so hopelessly out of form that I'm just not sure he will ever get it back. Not sure who else could replace him, but another failure in the 2nd innings if it comes to that and we need to be looking for another number two, Tom Wood or Harry Came possibly? Good days work Derbyshire, now let's keep building on it

  4. We score 339-5 and we still get negative comments, presumably from the same people who said Wayne was finished last season.

    1. Negative comments ? Or realistic observations ?

    2. I don't think refusing to paper over cracks is being negative. It's being realistic and wanting to be the best we can. Madsen isn't going to score 170 every week. All the top order needs to contribute if we are to be successful. An opening batsman who can barely make it into double figures is a liability. I don't want to be harsh as I'm a fan of Billy and he's been a good servant. But an openers job is to see off the new ball and hopefully go onto make runs. He's rarely (if ever) done that this season.

    3. It was more a point that on a day when one of our batsman made a big ton and another was the first in the country to 1,000 runs, someone felt the need to comment solely on Billy.

  5. Frankly as long as The Head of Cricket trusts Billy, that's good enough for me. Mickey's toenail knows more about cricket than the rest of us (I'm assuming no colossus of the game is commenting).

  6. In terms of the squad , Billy is the only one on a downward trend since the new era .Management will need to reassess his position soon particularly as he is red ball skipper .Lack of options and squad depth doesn’t help .if we can get 450 I think we can win this game .

  7. I was there today and Madsen was imperious. After a good first hour for them, I felt that Sussex’s heads went down fairly quickly and if we can get through the first half hour or so tomorrow, it could be a very big score.

  8. You've said everything I was going to say, Steve. If we'd have been 83-4 last season in the first innings, we'd have collapsed.

However, I'm concerned about the Billy situation. He hasn't scored this season and he's never looked like scoring. When MA came in, he kept Billy as captain, and I had my doubts about this, given his, and the team's performances last season. But something's not right with Billy. He's had a break from the County Championship, because of T20, and you would have thought he would have been taking advice from Ian Bell and others to rediscover his form. His form is still poor. So how long do we persist with him as an opener? Maybe we promote Reece and drop him down the order. I don't know. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks.

I'd give Harry Came the number 2 role, he can't score any worse than Billy

    2. Harry scored 140 for Swarkestone on Saturday. I think he will step up when Shan goes away for the next three championship matches. Unless MA has the money for and decides to bring in someone for that and the next stage of T20, should we get there.
