Derbyshire v Middlesex day 3

Middlesex 251 and 196 (Stoneman 67, Hollman 45, Reece 3-26, Dal 3-50, Watt 2-44)

Derbyshire 229 and 222-4 (Masood 98, Madsen 49*, Reece 35*)

Derbyshire won by 6 wickets

Not just because of the result, although all of us enjoy a win, but the manner of that win made this one of the most enjoyable games I have seen in some time.

For a starter, it was played on a really good wicket, where runs could be scored and wickets taken by those with the skills to do so. It was played on the most idyllic of grounds and only twice before had we chased more than 219 to win a game at Chesterfield - in 1948 and 1989.

Let's not forget, either, that this was a first defeat of the season for our opponents, one of the so-called 'big' counties that would survive in any cull of first-class cricket. They are a good side, the batting and seam bowling especially strong.

But we came out on top. I was very impressed by the discipline shown by Luis Reece, Anuj Dal, Alex Thomson and Mark Watt here. The control of the latter this morning, bowling a long spell, was especially impressive and his variations were there for all to see.

It was so good to see Reece back to his bowling best, while Dal has come on so much as a true all-rounder to be quite special.

We did well to keep the chase under the 230 I suggested last night might be manageable. The fielding was good today, the catch held by skipper Godleman setting a standard for his side.

As it turned out, we could have gone further, but yet again we were all in awe of Shan Masood.

In a season in which he has now scored an extraordinary 991 County Championship runs in just eleven innings, this was my favourite so far.

Batting was not easy, he was facing a keen attack on a wicket where the ball did some odd things. There was a challenging run chase and he was batting in front of his parents and brother, who were there for the day.

Yet with pretty much everyone else opting to graft, Masood followed a run-a-ball 49 in the first innings with 98 from 113 balls. It was sublime batting on a level we have rarely seen before and may seldom see again. Take every opportunity to watch this man while you can, because they don't come any more special. A century was richly deserved, but when he fell, the job was effectively done.

I have been fortunate too see every overseas player at Derbyshire, but Masood this season, in my opinion, is incomparable. You can bracket him with Kirsten, Jones, Azharuddin, Rogers and Di Venuto, prolific and fine players all and he loses nothing in comparison.

At the other end Madsen, enjoying a renaissance in his career, was secure in defence, stylish in attack. He became the third highest run scorer in the county history today, passing John Morris and with only Denis Smith and Kim Barnett ahead of him. Like Masood, cherish every moment. I have watched Derbyshire a very long time and it has never been better than watching those two at the crease. Wright and Kirsten were special too, but this is proving a vintage summer. Madsen currently averages 76 in the four-day game, yet is 'only' second to Masood's 90.

Extraordinary.

Du Plooy came in to force a win in three days and hit two enormous blows, but when he was dismissed Luis Reece played a delightful cameo to highlight his value to the side.

Third in the table tonight, playing some very good cricket. Mickey Arthur got his team selection spot on here, even omitting the second overseas player for a second spinner.

Next stop Yorkshire on Saturday, in front of what looks like a capacity crowd.

I can't wait for that one.

Well played, fellas. That was great!

  1. A truly sensational win against all the odds. Masood is a delight to watch in the way that he caresses the ball to the boundary and his contribution today was crucial. Madsen played an effective sheet anchor role allowing Reece to hit out and win the match for us. Earlier our attack performed brilliantly to restrict the Middlesex lead to manageable proportions and lay the foundation for our victory. Fantastic, Derbyshire!

  2. Brilliant win. Coupled with England's incredible afternoon it's been quite a day for the sides I follow. This is a game where last season's Derbyshire would have capitulated for about 150 in the 2nd innings. Just shows what good leadership and confidence can do. Congratulations to all.

  3. Agreed about the comparisons you make. I truly did not think I would see someone as classy as Azzurhadin in my lifetime but Masood is on his level.

Not just a win. Not just against the top of the league, not just against the so called big county

But a victory at my home ground, where Dad took me 40 years ago to my first game, the finest place in the world to watch a game of cricket he would have loved today 💙

    Derbyshire la la la

  4. And another wonderful report by Paul Edwards on the Cricinfo site. I encourage all Derbyshire supporters to read it.

    2. I forgot to mention Madsen, who is indeed having a renaissance, Steve. He took over the anchor from The Master, and was brilliant.

    3. There is no finer ground in the country John, totally agree. Maybe we are a bit biased though

  5. The Master’s influence is rubbing off on other players. The way du Plooy and Reece batted so aggressively, instead of digging in, was down to him. Not to forget the bowlers: excellent! Also, Madsen took 5 catches in the game and Guest six. The high confidence should feed into the York’s and Warwick’s games this weekend.

  6. What a victory, and this Derbyshire side is made of sterner stuff under Mickey Arthur this season. No way would we have won this last season, not a chance. As Steve says, Shan is just a class apart a wonderful batsman our best overseas player ever in my eyes, a joy to watch. Guptill was class but Shan is better, please can we get him for a second season, that would be a massive bonus. Big shout to our bowling attack who were all excellent today especially Watt, Reece, and Dal. We'll done lads, now bring on the Yorkies to dish out some more punishment

  7. A terrific win. A team effort, for sure, but you couldn't wish for a better example of the transformational impact of one top-quality player in prime form on a county team, especially in the second division.

  8. While I can't argue with the impact of Arthur, there are 4 key components to the turnaround for me. The return to fitness of Madsen and Reece, the progress of Brooke Guest and of course, Masood. Kris

  9. An England and Derbyshire win in the same afternoon - there is a God!!

  10. Astute selections by Mickey Arthur. A glance at the very dated DCCC website videos and last June's "Cork excited to work with van Beek again" shows how far the club has progressed under MA.

  11. Not long ago if we were chasing just over two hundred with almost a day and a half to get them, we would have batted cautiously, lost wickets regularly, got bogged down, and lost.

This was never going to be the approach yesterday when you have Masood opening the batting. He realised that it was better to chase the runs from the word go rather than hang around. And he was superb, once again. Madsen also played a fine innings, allowing Masood to accumulate. When Masood was out, du Plooy and Reece both batted with aggression to get us over the finishing line in three days.

Our bowlers were also superb in keeping Middlesex’s total to just over 200. A fantastic performance!

The only cause for concern is Billy’s batting. He’s enduring a torrid time. I’ve asked this before: should Mickey stick with him as an opener? Or should g=he rest him, or perhaps drop him down the order and let Reece open?

    1. I don't think Billy would work down the order. He skippered well here and is more flexible with his bowling changes. Held a terrific catch too. First innings he batted well but gave it away to spin. We have to stick with him and I am hopeful he will come good

  12. A feature of this game for me was having six frontline bowlers with plenty of variety. Billy astutely used the quicker bowlers from the Pavilion End (Anuj and Luis both bowled really well and deserved their wickets), with the spinners from the Lake End. Mark Watt was really impressive. Can we get him on a full contract?
I'm not sure we need a scapegoat at the moment but it seems Billy is being offered as one. For me he looked in good touch in the first innings before offering a soft return catch which can happen. The second innings was a simple miscommunication and he unselfishly sacrificed himself. There was plenty to admire in his captaincy.
It was great to see a match on a proper cricket pitch offering a balance between bat and ball unlike Derby unfortunately.

    1. Watt on a full deal is an option perhaps for next year, but with the RLODC coming up might MA have budget room?

Yes, Luis and Nuj were very impressive here!

  13. Confidence should be high in the squad as we go into the two important T20 games at the weekend. One of the great things since MA took charge is that there's now competition for places.

    1. Yes, I think Nuj must be a strong bet to come back in after how he bowled here. I think Sam Conners needs a breather, and Nuj would be a perfect replacement

  14. Some commentators/pundits, keen to feather their own nest, would have Derbyshire reduced to a National County. Well this is a significant victory on many levels and, to be blunt, sticks it right up 'em! Derbyshire and Leicestershire seem to get the blame when the Test team fail. I wonder if they'll get any credit when they succeed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. no Sean we will not get credit! call me a revolutionery but if blame is apportioned it should be those who play not the Counties who never have anyone selected!

  16. Looks like being a washout on Saturday at Chesterfield for the T20 game, what a shame with what should've been a cracking game

The forecast seems to have improved regarding the likelihood and heaviness of any rain over the last 24hrs so I'm pretty hopeful.

  17. Excellent performance. Apart from the fact we ended it yesterday meaning my day at QP didn't happen.
Given that he is the skipper of an improved side and is clearly a part of it all, we stick with Billy G in my opinion.
