Yet the home side only took a lead of 50 on first innings, being bowled out for 341. Alex Hughes did best with 4-48, while Mattie McKiernan took 3-39 and George Scrimshaw 2-48.
It was a tough old day for Mikey Cohen, who had figures of 0-91 in his fifteen overs
Our first innings was built around a fine century by former Essex player Kishen Velani, who made an excellent 116, adding 152 for the last two wickets to take the side to a decent score.
Batting again, Derbyshire were 50-1, on level terms, by the close. Harrys Came and Finch are the not out batsmen.
The latter interests me, highly regarded in his time with Sussex and, with Velani, perhaps looking for - and deserving - another opportunity in the county game.
Performances such as Velani gave first time around can do nothing but impress.
To be blunt I think Finch is exactly the sort of batter that would fit nicely into a promising but inexperienced Sussex lineup right now but less so our unit given he's 27 with an average to match. I'd rather opportunities in our first XI went the way of Wood, Came or Wagstaff.
ReplyDeleteI found it very bizarre when they released Finch and Wells.
A shame to see Cohen go without a wicket. Hopefully he bounces back and confidence boosted challenges for a first XI place. Left arm pace like his would be useful.
Well, he needs big scores wherever he trials. I don't see anyone forcing a way into our batting right now, but available players need looked at while academy boys are unavailable.
DeleteI take it Tom Wood is injured Steve ? Sorry if you have answered this question elsewhere.
DeleteYes he is, mate. Hasn't played yet this season but hopefully not too far away, with the T20 looming!
DeleteDoes anyone know what injury Tom Wood has as when the team news is always displayed it just says Tom Wood is out whereas on others it does give brief details of injuries ?
ReplyDeleteIt could be an illness, of course and confidentiality kicks in. I don't know, but I am sure we will see him again before too long. Hope so, anyway!
