We fought, all the way down the order.
Nick Potts ended up with 4-50, as he and Sam Conners shared an eight - wicket academy alumni haul and we wrapped up the home innings fairly quickly.
Then Shan Masood got a frankly poor decision, the umpire pressured into an lbw call by embarrassing theatrics from Stuart Broad. Yes, I am old fashioned, but these type of celebratory appeals do no one any favours, least of all the perpetrators. Masood was outside off stump and later Leus Du Plooy got an even worse call.
Godleman grafted and he, with Madsen, got us close to parity, but a rush of wickets saw an end look likely before the close
Then Alex Hughes and Liam Hurt added a gutsy 90 runs in 23 overs, each missing a deserved fifty by one run. Let's not forget that there are international attacks worse than this Nottinghamshire one, so the players deserve every credit for taking it into the fourth day.
Could there yet be a twist in the tale? Alex Thomson got sharp turn in the final over of the day and a couple of early wickets tomorrow might set alarm bells ringing.
But there is no disgrace here, none at all.
In a weird way I found today one of the most encouraging days of the season. Losing Shan Masood for a duck could in previous seasons led to a collapse and at one point it looked like it could be over today.
ReplyDeleteBut the partnership between Hughes and Hurt who this time last week were looking forward to playing against each other as Derbyshire 2nd's had a game against Lancashire 2nd on Thursday was very pleasing. You only see this fight if there is a good dressing room atmosphere.
Alex Hughes seems a captain's dream who would do anything to help out. I'm guessing he would sell scorecards, run the coffee bar and be car park steward if it benefitted the club. According to the commentary he was in bed when he was announced in the team watching Lancashire 2nd XI on You Tube preparing for the afternoon's 2nd XI T20 game.
We are still underdogs but a couple of early wickets tomorrow would make for an interesting day.

DeleteThere can be little doubt that if Masood and Du Plooy had the benefit of the review system both would have been reprieved. But we have done remarkably well to frustrate Notts and take them to a fourth day considering all the vicissitudes we have had to contend with. Proud of our team today.
ReplyDeletePoor decision against Masood and equally poor behaviour by Broad. Pattinson also looked to be sledging Godleman before lunch; he has considerable form in that respect.

DeleteI thought that was it...but then Hughes and Hurt put on 90, and we give our bowlers something to bowl at. Not a lot, granted, but better than eighty odd.
ReplyDeleteA great effort from the lads yesterday in the face of adversity. I watched most of the afternoon action. Brilliant partnership between Hughes and Hurt. 2 shocking decisions against Masood and Du Plooy. The look on Madsen's face when Du Plooy was given out spoke volumes, even their appeal was half-hearted. Godleman and Madsen fought hard but rather gave away their wickets. I thought that Pattinson should have been reprimanded by the umpires for his petulant behaviour. Hoping for a miracle today. Onwards and upwards.
ReplyDeleteIt's worth remembering that in 2013 the distinguished sports journalist Michael Henderson wrote in The Times comparing Stuart Broad's "reprehensible behaviour" in standing his ground despite being caught in the slips v Australia with the behaviour of Wayne Madsen. Wayne had "walked" when feathering a catch when the umpire didn't see it and the Yorkshire players didn't appeal. He subsequently received the inaugural Sprit of Cricket Elite Award given in memory of Christopher Martin Jenkins. Wayne is a true sportsman. Broad clearly is not.
