It is good to see that some of Derbyshire's fringe players are working hard in their league commitments to keep in the frame for the senior side.
Saturday's cricket saw Paul Borrington make an unbeaten century for Ticknall, while Ross Whiteley made an unbeaten 136 for Swarkestone. Meanwhile Mark Footitt took 5-38 for Stainsby Hall as they cantered to a win.
Mind you, one of the strongest sides in the East Midlands must be the West Indian Cavaliers in the Nottinghamshire Premier League. Their batting is currently headed by Usman Afzaal, too good a player to be out of the county game, while their bowling is spearheaded by Alex Tudor and Saqlain Mushtaq.
Three Test players in one club side. Impressive!
Do we know if Rafiq is to extend his stay with us?
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see that Whiteley got some runs as there have been some posts questioning John Morris picking him. Although he is talented player I also think that the ECB payments would have been a factor in John picking him.
Can anyone settle an argument on how many years service John Morris and Andy Brown actually served at Derbyshire?
ReplyDeleteI would think Yorkshire will want Rafiq back for the T20 mate. I would if I was them.
ReplyDeleteAs for Morris, he joined Derbyshire on August 21, 2007. Brown joined him on November 3 that year as assistant coach.
What about their total service in years? We think it might be getting on for 30 years.
ReplyDeleteRafiq has turned out to be a decent signing for us and will have earned us lots of money from the ECB because of his young age. Its a pity it will all go towards paying off the bloke who signed him!
ReplyDeleteInteresting comments on Cavaliers. I had the (mis)fortune to play a few games against them in the 90's and their ability to attract top-quality players at that time was the constant talking point among teams who'd had to face them. There was much gossip at the time about council houses and jobs in the local council being involved.
ReplyDeleteMore recently, a scandal involving allocation by council houses by Nottingham City Homes (director Tyrone Browne) has attracted a good deal of media attention. Obviously, no connection has been shown between this and WI Cavs (secretary Tyrone Browne) but the following links would be interesting reading for anyone who wants to know more.

The latter refers to a number of organisations that the same Tyrone Browne is linked to - I wonder if any current WI Cavs are employed by these organisations?
Again this week at the County Ground too many differing stories coming out on why Morris was sacked and this at an ECB match. The constant silence by the club is surely not doing the club any favours.
ReplyDeleteThe club have said they will be making NO FURTHER COMMENT. Its as simple as that,so you can all forget about any more details emerging,at the very least until the legal side is sorted. That may take some considerable time and will apply to all parties, club and individuals.
ReplyDeleteI played against Whiteley recently. He batted well, clean striker of the ball. Bowled ok but as a professional would think he would stand out more at division one level therefore suspect he has played games based on ecb payments
ReplyDeleteCheers Marc. I have said that four times at the last count, so that saves me doing it again...!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting comments about the Cavaliers....thanks!
