This is way too early for knee jerk reactions, wailing and gnashing of teeth, but if we bat like we did today on a regular basis it will be a long summer.
I'd agree with a couple of comments on yesterday's post that we shouldn't be getting rolled over for that total against that attack. While there was a mystery element to some of the bowlers, our batsmen need to realise - and quickly - that twenties and thirties are little use.
As I say, no getting carried away. This time last year we hammered Surrey and thought we were the best thing since sliced bread. We weren't, and nor are we as bad as that performance today suggests.
At least I don't think so.
In closing tonight, as we're socialising, there is no chance of Robin Peterson coming back. He would never get another Kolpak deal having gone back to international cricket having remounced it, and he's not good enough to get an overseas role in my opinion.

Our bowling seems to have no 'Plan B' I'm affraid. A long list of right arm medium pacers and no specialist spinner.
ReplyDeleteBatting without Rogers was always going to be a worry but it's very early days yet and we do have options in Khawaja, Linekar and Borrington.
No point panicking yet it is only the first match.
ReplyDeleteIt is however a poor start against a county that has under gone more upheaval and weakening than most.
Can hardly complain either that it was Derbyshire's inexperience and youth, given the age and experience of those that undid us. The batting sounded bad - the Gloscricket commentators suggested all five of the top order got themselves out with bad shots - but agree with commentators elsewhere that it's the inability of our bowlers to finish off innings that is the real concern, and has been for two years.
ReplyDeleteHaving seen the Derbyshire first innings,I find it hard to explain why we so bad.There appeared to be little or nothing in the pitch. how Derbyshire only managed forty overs at the crease is worrying.If they had struggled for an extra 25 overs for the same sort of score it would not have been so galling.
