Derbyshire v Middlesex day 1

Not exactly what we were looking for today, being bowled out for 154. As I write Chris Rogers has made his expected 50 against us and Middlesex, at 77-1 are halfway to our total with nine wickets in hand.

The County Ground this year could be that sort of track and there'll be days when it will go our way and days when it won't. If the day had adhered to the script we'd all written mentally Usman Khawaja would be 120 not out right now and we'd be closing in on the final batting points.

It didn't happen but hey - them's the breaks. Rogers will be a key wicket and we'll see what happens when (if?) he goes.

More tomorrow, when I'll be there to watch events unfold.

  2. I am not sure it is down to the breaks, Peakfan. From what I heard on commentary(admittedly, I wasn't present), there was poor application shown from many of our batsmen and shot selection was awry.

I am not singling him out, but Durston doesn't appear to be the right choice for the top of the order in my view. Morris may have seen something that others have not I suppose. More worryingly, is the over-reliance on three, potentially four, to come off with a high individual score for the side to post a decent total.

DCCC likely to be a team to put up a serious challenge for promotion?

Sorry, I don't see it. There are too many weak links in the batting pool for that in my view - even if I declare it at such an early stage of the campaign. Our attack, though potentially steady, is unlikely to have enough edge to compensate and other sides are, on paper at least, look stronger.

Only my opinion and I am trying to be pragmatic, rather than jump on the bandwagon and be defeatist.

Mid (CC) table and a run in the 1 dayers would be progress.

  4. Can I add Luke Sutton to the long list of great John Morris signings. Another master stroke from John.

  5. Nice to see the new chairman Chris Grant on the ground again yesterday mingling in with the fans and listening to what they had to say. He seems to care about us. I wish him all of the best.

  7. I understand that the Second XI are playing Yorkshire at Belper but there are no scores on our 'Official' website. Have we got a Press Officer? Does anyone know the score?

  8. Question: How long has John Morris been contributor to this blog?

  9. Whilst on about John Morris his decision to stand by Wes Durston as an opening batsman might just win us this game. Others were saying that Durston is no opener but John stood by him and Durston's innings today was the reward.

  10. I am one who has doubted Wes as an opener (not as a player, mind), but he has certainly done well today. The big question is whether he can keep it up.

We must bear in mind mighty John did not have the foresight to select Durston as an opener from the start of the season, more in reaction to the injury to Borrington followed, more recently, with the poor form of Park.

Just to put on record though, I was one of the very first advocates for bringing Durston to the club - at the beginning of last season, once the Grockles blog (Somerset supporters) alerted the cricket world to the fact that Wes was likely to be released, which was some months before Morris decided to make a move for him.

  11. I've not always been the biggest fan of John Morris but his talent for spotting a player is unreal. It's time we gave him a bigger contract before another county does.
