I was genuinely impressed with us today! After the worst possible start, to reach 300 was beyond my dreams ! Then take a key wicket ! I think I may have to stay as a member after all,even if I do live 170 miles away ! WELL DONE !
ReplyDeleteVery good performance today. It will be interesting to see if Bashir and Morley can bowl better then in the last match and out perform Bertie foreman who I thought bowled well on a first day wicket considering he’s pretty new to first class cricket
ReplyDeleteYes, to recover from 0-2 to 300 and gain a relatively rare 2nd batting point would seem to be an indicator of a bit of resilience. But where would we have been without Martin Anderssons contribution? Extras were by some distance the 2nd highest score. The 10 batters other than Andersson scored 124 between them. I'll hold off a little on seeing a speck of light at the end of the tunnel.
ReplyDeleteWell that was better! At 0-2 I feared the worst, but a gritty Martin Andersson century certainly got us to a larger first innings score than I expected. He was well supported by Luis Reece and Brett Randell’s lower order runs were more than useful. Now to try and capitalise with the ball tomorrow and hope that our fielding is better than Kent’s which was a bit ragged at times.
ReplyDeleteA great recovery. I thought we were looking at another just over 100 score at one point. A couple of questionable decisions. Another fine knock from Andersson and Randell can certainly hold a bat. Let’s hope our spinners do better than in the last game. Grant from Telford

ReplyDeleteAnother player of concern is Luis Reece. He has had some outstanding performances, having played at Derbyshire for 10 seasons, scoring around 6,000 runs and taking 200 wickets in first-class cricket.
However, this averages out to 600 runs and 20 wickets per season.
While Derbyshire’s batting is considered by many to have been poor this season, four of their top five batters so far have scored between 500 and 600 runs—which is right in the range of what Reece has achieved over his entire career at the club.
Reece has undoubted ability, but for a club like Derbyshire with limited resources, isn’t availability the best ability?

Conditions were dire at 10.30 and t 10.34 we were only partly joking that it would be allover by close of play as Kent would have forfeited there first innings and still won!
ReplyDeleteReally excellent fightback after lunch with improving conditions, Martin Andersson is certainly one of Arthurs success stories, he does appear to start scratchy but as the innings wore on he grew in confidence.
We thought 250 and a bonus point would have been a good result, so 300 was excellent.
It does look like last weeks troubles have been put behind the players as we managed to speak to a couple as they headed to and from the nets and they were happy to speak, also the chairman and Jason? were out and about and they weren't avoiding anyone. Had a chat about the ground developments in the winter and about the new floodlights. was interesting to here the the ECB have insisted on the new lights and there won't be any additional day/night matches. As the chairman said floodlights are the worst ground investment in county cricket!
All in all it didn't turn out a bad day, three more like this please.

On the preview page Martin talked about Adam Holioakes shenanigans 20 years ago. Correct me if I'm wrong, but i seem to recall it was when Derbyshire beat Surrey at the county ground and he made a big fuss about the pitch and Derbyshire were deducted points? Something along those lines.

Thanks to Andersson, a great fightback. That's his fifth century this season in all competitions. He received some good support from Reece, Randell (looks like he can bat) and Morley.
ReplyDeleteOn the downside, Bothe Came (181 runs in his last eight innings) and Guest (four ducks in his last nine innings) seem totally out of form.
When I arrived at the ground at 10.35 to learn that we were 0-2 I thought we might struggle to make it till lunch. Kent opening Bangladeshi bowler Mahmud was making problems with virtually every delivery, with overcast skies and a strong cold breeze. Bin Neem and Madsen battled with sound defence but when both fell leg before we were in deep trouble again. It was attritional cricket with Kent in the ascendancy. Conditions eased somewhat after lunch but runs were still difficult to come by. Good as it was to see Reece back in the side he seemed becalmed at times, with his 211 against the same opponents twelve months ago a distant memory. Seven wickets down and with not yet 180 on the board, I never imagined in my wildest dreams that we would reach 300. That we did was due almost entirely to Andersson, who increased in confidence as the afternoon wore on. He eventually found a durable partner in Randell who played some impressive strokes and sound defence, a crunching drive for 4 through extra cover one of the best shots of the day. Andersson went to a richly deserved century and then achieved his highest career score, finishing undefeated. Derbyshire's cause was helped by 47 extras, some of the Kent fast bowlers continually straying down the leg side. An added bonus before the close was the wicket of Compton, but with Kent's strong batting lineup to come and batting conditions improving,I can't in all honesty see us winning. But a fascinating days cricket at Derby. And what a great signing Andersson has been.
