He has improved immeasurably over the course of the summer. I don't think too many people expected him to be on the staff in 2027, when this summer started, but his progress under the watchful eye of Chris Wright has been remarkable.
I also think, as with Ben Aitchison, that his increased confidence in his body has been a contributory factor. His performances in the Vitality Blast were excellent and he showed growing confidence with varied pace and length.
He's also a terrific fielder and has shown through the summer that he is more than capable with the bat. It could well be that by the end of this two years he is seen as a genuine all-rounder, like Chappell, Aitchison and Moore.
To be fair to Derbyshire, without Chappell, Moore, Brown and Reece this year they have done well to remain competitive, especially in the red ball format. If they can get all of them fit for next season, the attack will take on a different dimension.
Congratulations Nick. Like everyone else, I can only say that this contract is a deserved reward for what has clearly been a lot of hard work.
Onwards and upwards!
He has done really well & his contract extension is well deserved. Perhaps there is a wider lesson here in that we should not expect too much from pace bowlers in their early twenties.

Good news, especially as we might be losing Ben Aitchison after next season? Potts has really come on and runs in with a real purpose now. Kris
ReplyDeleteI have no doubt there will be interest in Ben, but I am equally sure that Mickey Arthur will do the best he can for a new contract. I am hopeful we will see him beyond next year and that can only be good news!

ReplyDeletePotts has looked better this season though worth bearing in mind that several were mentioning his potential last season when he had fleeting exposure but showed a strong attitude and good variety.
ReplyDeleteWhat's changed this season? The bowling coach, yes but he's also had an opportunity due to injuries. Fair play to him for grabbing it but there is a lesson for MA there as well.
Lastly I'll note that his wicket taking is strong but his economy can be poor, as evidenced by 10.5 in the Blast this season. Hopefully he keeps improving and I look forward to seeing it.
Yes he can get tighter, but that goes for all of them. To improve at T20 we need bowlers whose rpo is less than 9/10. We can't ALWAYS chase 200
DeleteAny idea why Notts are playing at Chesterfield as their home ground? There must be one or two out grounds in Nottinghamshire they could utilise instead of coming over border lines.
ReplyDeleteChesterfield want to stage more cricket and it's a better set up than Welbeck. Only 5 miles from border and the Ben Slater connection will do no harm! Hope there is a good turnout!
DeleteI would guess that there are a couple of reasons. Firstly because the Trent Mega Elephants are using Trent Bridge and judging by the highlight clips the crowd have to wear hi-viz due to the building works. Secondly because Chesterfield is lovely and beats owt in Notts.

I am off to Scarborough tomorrow but like you I hope Queens Park is well attended. Derbyshire definitely under value it. IMO the 50 over game held at Repton should be in Queens Park. Members in the North of the County deserve a 50 over game there.

DeleteI couldn't agree more, John. Chesterfield gets a meagre two Derbyshire matches per season while in the High Peak we get no cricket at all, with Buxton abandoned and Glossop ignored. Chapel Guy
